If you look at S&W’s catalog you’ll see many different versions, all based on the 5-shot j-frame platform. So that means they’re selling a bunch of them, which also means lots of people are buying and probably carrying them. Me, I carry a 642 most of the time. Never mind the +P, though. I prefer the standard velocity 110-grain Critical Defense round by Hornady.

My issued revolver saved me more than once during the first 20 yrs of my career & I still carry a J Frame in retirement. I’ve pocket carried a revolver w/a hammer and you just put a thumb over the hammer when drawing from the pocket. My current EDC is either a 340PD or 442 Pro.

I've read more than once that the 442/642 is the #1 seller SW has every year, including last year. My no lock 442 has been a great back up gun, coat pocket gun, and snake shot gun for about 10 years now.

I have one. I bought mine as a backup and for undercover use when I was in law enforcement. I also have a an S&W 649 with the shrouded hammer. I prefer that one actually but because of weight and carrying it on my ankle the 642 I have carried more. I have a pocket holster for it although I rarely carry it that way. Mine is accurate. For the roles I used it in it is hard to beat. The air weights in my opinion are to be carried a lot and shot a little, especially with plus p ammo.

I have one that I believe they made a mistake and did not have the airweight writing on the side or the larger S&W logo. It's a 642-1 and I looked up others online and all had it so I'm thinking it slipped out of the factory that way. I had to have it when I saw it because not only of that but the fact it does not have the Hillary hole. Gun shop guy was really shocked to see what I was talking about and even checked his other inventory to see if any others were the same and nope. I posted a video of it. Great little guns and about as perfect as one can get for a pocket pistol imo.

I own one with a hammer and I love this little sucker shoots nice within 25 yards self-defense distance ammo does matter though it doesn't like the cheap stuff throws it everywhere

I have Pachmyer Diamond Pro grips, a Wilson Combat 13 lb trigger kit and I bobbed the hammer on my 637. I keep it in a Stiky holster iny pocket. It's very comfortable and easy to carry

I wouldn’t necessarily say that a revolver with a hammer is old school. Smith and Wesson was making hammerless revolver‘s in the late 1800s.

I love this gun. But I have to hold low to get center mass shots. Other than that, it’s a little beast with some +P loadings. Absolutely love it. Probably carry it more than my Beretta 92x compact. Just toss it in my pocket or Bianci minimalist holster and I forget the dang thing is on me. Lol. It’s a sweet lil gun for sure imo.

If you prefer an exposed hammer, then just get the model 637, it's the exact same gun but has the exposed hammer. The Ruger LCR had a shrouded hammer when it first came out in 2008 but customers wanted the option of an exposed hammer so they came out with the LCRX. Both are great snub nose revolvers.
