Love old S&W’s, especially model 10’s. I found me a pre-10, born date of between 1948-1951. Great looking revolver you got there, congrats! Nice to see the little lady shooting it DA. She’ll get used to the DA, just keep practicing.

I saw some of the later model, "heavy barrel" types on sale some place. Some old, police trade-in's that I might have to jump on before someone else snatches them up. There's something special about putting some rounds down range with the likes of these old school pieces. Update: Got myself a 10-8 HB a few weeks ago and that thing is deadly accurate!! $350 for it, a leather holster, and a speedloader case with 2 of those!!
@Gieszkanne Жыл бұрын
Heavy barrel arent always "later". The tapered barrel or standard barrel were made a long time additional to the heavy barrel.At least to the early 2000!

I never see alot of these used guns in stores but we have trade day once a year. Goes on probably 2-3 miles where people come from all over to set up. Buy sale trade. This year I seen alot of model 10s selling between 300-350. Traffic backed for miles to the interstate trying to get to it. You should check out your trade days and festivals like that.

I personally believe the 10-7 barrel is sexy compared to the 10-8 Bull Barrel. It gives the revolver more character, and looks like a traditional old school revolver.
@Gieszkanne Жыл бұрын
Has nothing to do with the dash. You could get both barrels almost until the end of the production in the early 2000. Only the classic now is only available as hb. But i like the tapered barrel also better for looks.

I just picked up a model 10-5 from our local gun store for 199.99. Great shooting revolver. Recoil is minimal and very accurate. This is my 5th S&W revolver, but first model 10. Might try to find another one with the bull barrel.

Nice Tomax and Xamot closing. Nice gun. You can’t go wrong with a fundamental plain jane service revolver like the M-10. S&W actions made prior to the 1990s are far superior, particularly in double action. Get you a few Safariland speedloaders and have fun with faster reloading too.

Until 1993 (officially) the venerable, historical, and iconic .38 caliber revolver (.38 Special) revolver was the standard issue sidearm of the NYPD: New York Police Department. Two versions of the .38 revolver were common: the K-Frame Smith and Wesson Model 10 Military and Police or "Hand Ejector", and Ruger's Police Service Six. The NYPD commencing in 1993 began to issue the Glock 17 9mm semi-automatic pistol. So how can an S&W Model 10 ex police revolver be improved today? 1. Aftermarket combat rubber grips by either Pachmayr or Uncle Mikes. These grips improved shooting comfort, practical accuracy, and handling, 2. sending gun back to the Smith and Wesson factory in Springfield, Mass. and having it checked over, stripped, lubed, and cleaned. Maybe even re blued. Of course, a local gunsmith can do the same, and 3., perhaps applying orange nail polish to top of front sight. This improves the sight picture. I have posted so many online comments in regards to classic Smith and Wesson .38 and .357 revolvers that anything I post here will be repetitive. These online comments pertain to Smith and Wesson K-Frame revolvers: Models 10, 13, 14, 15, and 19. Stainless versions of the former were Models 64, 65, 66, and 67, respectively. If a person owns a .38 caliber revolver: .38 Special or .357 Magnum, preferably the latter, as it will likewise chamber and fire .38 Special ammo, they don't need an arsenal for providing "self defense/house protection/concealed carry." Provided they are safe, competent, accurate, and familiar with the Manual of Arms for the historic police type service revolver (double-action) with six shot, swing out cylinder. James A. "Jim" Farmer Merrill, Oregon (Klamath County) Long live the State of Jefferson!

Not quite. The Model 10 went away in about 1987. A cop thumbed the hammer back and blew a kid’s head off. Spurless Model 64 replaced it. The Service Six hung on for a bit but in the stainless steel spurless hammer model. In 1993, the job did go to semi autos. But not the Glock 17. We had option of S&W 5946, Glock 19, and SIG 226. When the 5946 was no longer offered, the Glock 17 became an option. Glock 19 and SIG 226 are still offered.

Year ago, when I started in LE, we were issued this revolver. Later on, we were issued a Model 64 which was in stainless steel with a bull barrel. For Sam, there was a grip adapter which filled in the area behind the trigger guard which made it a lot easier to shoot well. Great to see a new video. Are you all still shooting cowboy action?

It's completely safe to load 6 rounds in a modern single action revolver. Even the old revolvers you could carry six with the revolver "half-cocked".

@OldManMontgomery3 жыл бұрын
Not only does the firing pin not rest on the cartridge primer, but an internal piece works as an 'anti transfer bar' to block such contact. The mechanism of a S&W revolver is designed to be safe in this regard since introduction in 1899. A 'hammer block' (internal and unseen) was added in 1915 to settle the minds of the nervous. Over 100 years now, loading all chambers is safe. About the only handguns that did have such a problem were the specifically single action revolvers and a few double action revolver designed in the same era (pre 1900 or so). Pardon me for going on, but I get terribly frustrated when people say such idiotic things based on what daddy told them. Shooting a S&W double action revolver single action is an unnatural act. Double action shooting is safer (one never has to let the hammer down on a loaded chamber) but it is twice as easy. The young woman's comments are interesting. It sounds like she may have small hands and that presents a problem. On the other hand, she seems to have fired single action (cowboy match) revolvers and that is her only experience. Her 'objection' to the feeling of the trigger may be it does feel different than a single action trigger, even in single action mode. I have rather small hands and from the age of about 12-13, I had no problem reaching or depressing the trigger. I am delighted you have a 'pencil" barrel model. That is the regular barrel for that model, with an optional 'heavy' barrel. Many think the heavy barrel hangs in the hand better, has less recoil (from the extra weight) or it just looks cooler. (I suspect the latter in many cases.) I prefer the thin barrel as the revolver handles faster. Good video, all in all. Couple of added comments, June 2023: The model 10-7 was made in 1977.. Out of curiosity, does that revolver have a barrel 'pin' (top of the frame where the threaded part of the barrel passes through)? I didn't see one in the video, but some details like that just don't show.
@TightwadTodd3 жыл бұрын
I agree...The term i have known for that action is,,a rebounding hammer...With the old pin mounted single and double actions{pre 1900} you could let the pin down between rounds,known as a mid notch carry and its a holdover from the percussion revolver...
@OldManMontgomery3 жыл бұрын
@@TightwadTodd Affirmative. Rebounding hammer is the system in several double action revolvers that the hammer and firing pin retracts from the 'engage the primer' position and a bit of metal interposes itself as the trigger is released. Smith and Wesson has had a couple of different systems to do this. Some other brands (Ruger for one) use a 'transfer bar' that fills the gap between hammer and firing pin ONLY when the trigger is completely pulled. But if Daddy told them...

@regsparkes65076 жыл бұрын
He showed why this is near the beginning. When at rest the hammer is away from the cylinder/rounds. So most times you'd be correct Terry, but the S&W in this model 10 revolver, has that covered.
@GunfighterWyo6 жыл бұрын
Terry you can carry this revolver safely with 6 rounds. It was designed for LE. As such it is safe to carry with all 6 rounds. I carried one for a little over a year when we were issued a stainless steel model 10 which was the Model 64. It had a bull barrel. I carried it with 6 rounds for years. Never had any AD or other problems.
