Better to have extra units than wait for them to turn up when you really need them
@dave11357 жыл бұрын
it may not look like much to all you commenting on this, but basement fires are the worst. its extremely hot, zero visibility, and usually only one point of egress. plus there's the risk of collapse due to weakening of the floor supports. also, in older houses, called balloon construction, the studs in the walls run continuously from basement to attic, and fire can get in these spaces and climb and spread to the second floor space, the attic, and in the walls. firefighters go two in into a structure, with two more teams ready to replace the first, as the high heat conditions and physical exertion will wear a person out in about 15 minutes. in addition to the three interior teams, there are two more teams called the RIT team, or rapid intervention team. if something goes wrong, the immediately go in and rescue the interior firefighter. ambulances are on scene for firefighters or civilians in case of injury. so yes, a lot of people and equipment is required at fires.

They had to bring water in because there's no hydrants, you fucking twat. Also, learn English. The term is "in close quarters." "Inclosed" is not a word and "courter" is an antiquated term for someone trying to date someone else.

Here in the UK, the standard response to a house fire is two engines, one officer and no ambulance. Occasionally you might get a police car turn up, but only if they're bored! All other support is available on request.
@matt9c16 жыл бұрын
Fun Fact : The US is not the UK. We handle things based on our needs. After living in Staffordshire for a year, I can honestly say that I have experienced living there in the UK. Water supply is quite different. Not all neighborhoods can offer high capacity city water to feed a hydrant system. This is why tankers are used and shuttled back and forth. Many fire depts here are volunteer. Sometimes a engine/pumper may arrive with only three people on it. Don't forget, these volunteers all have jobs to go to as well. Calls during the day always strain services. Also after living in the UK for a year, I can tell you that y'all have no idea what it's like to wear turnout gear when the tamps are in the lower 90's with high humidity. So, the human factor kicks in. There's only so long a firefighter can wear the turnout gear and handle the high heat. Fresh crews are needed and will start a rotating shift. Firefighters go in, the other crew takes a break and cools off. Then they switch. This is like the age old debate of American cars vs European cars. They were built for different needs and therefore are not apples to apples comparison.

I just had a house fire this past weekend, 3 engines, 1 ladder, 2 medics, 2 chiefs
@ThamesCentrePhotography6 ай бұрын
Standard response for the city career department near me is 2 engines, an aerial, a rescue and a chief. The volunteer department near me is all personnel dependent. One station has 4 apparatus and the other has 6. Highway calls there are no personal vehicles or light rescue allowed. Heavy rescue, engine, and two water tankers for blocking lanes (6 lane highway.) On a weekday they struggle to fill the trucks.

Well let see, no fire hydrants, looks like out in the county, pumpers don't carry that much water so the extra/mutual aid response makes lots of sense to me. They just may need the extra water. I use to be a volunteer fire fighter and we did not have hydrants, so the more trucks that arrived wwith water the better, even if you don't use all the water

The fire doesn't always have to be big, but when there is one they call in what's referred to as " Mutual Aid." They call in numerous surrounding towns for assistance. Half of the out of town trucks will go to the scene and the other half will occupy the in town stations in the event of another call. They also call in ambulances for standby at the scene in the event they're also needed, they're already there.

MiniPumper, Ambulance, Tanker, Police Car, Rescue Van, another Tanker, Fire Chief, (FINALLY) a Pumper, another Equipment truck, a 2nd Rescue truck, a huge Tanker from "Boltonville"??.. plus as Snorkel truck from Kewaskum & Quint truck from Newberg That's only 13 vehicles, and realistically, only 5 of them were used to fight the fire.. It must not have been much of a fire... Other than the Boltonville Tanker, what exactly was HUGE about this response ??

I appreciate that the whole of the UK could fit in a corner of most states, but here all fire services are organised by county (state) so the appliances and procedures are standard. All counties are trained to the same national standard. It seems illogical to have volunteer, retained (part time) and whole time departments some with modern equipment others with museum pieces. Why does every station (mostly) have to have a chief/batallion pick up vehicle this seems unnecessary expense the senior officer should ride an appliance ? Off the subject of firefighting is it a city ordinance that forces people to have just an unfenced lawn in front of their house ? In the UK most local authorities actually require a small wall or fence around a house.

Since MABAS came on line in Wisconsin, box cards are organized on an 80/20 principle...no single department sends more than 80% of its strength at a time to a single working fire. Neighboring departments are not only brought in (under what used to be "auto-aid") to fight the fires, but also at need will backfill stations of the requesting department, to preserve coverage. It's all carefully pre-planned.

RTobi (Rummeltobi) on our volunteer department, many members respond in p.o.v's, personally owned vehicles, along with our trucks. plus, at a big incident, we have the public come out in droves, block the road and go stand and watch. makes it a pain for our tanker drivers to back in to the portable tanks beside the pumpers.

I live in a large city. Here a house fire they usually send three units on first one. Once on scene if needed they call in more. Was that a fist alarm response or more. That many units would be a three a four alarm fire here not a house basement alarm. A two story house down the street caught fire several months ago. It was fully involved when they arrived and all they ended up with down there was five units, batalion chief, and ems on stand by on scene if needed.
