I think it's really interesting how it aged almost like you would expect a real ship to age in the pre-photos, weathering lines, little chips in the paint, it looked authentically battle worn, but I'm really glad they fixed it up and preserved it, great job guys.

She was in a case in the gift shop for many years after they found she was aging faster than anticipated. The gift shop relocation was to keep her in 1 piece till they could give her the attention she deserved. I saw her in 2003 by accident and was glad I did. I returned to DC with a friend in 2010 or 2011 and showed her to him ( he’s the one who got me into trek ). Have vowed to come back and see her in her restored glory

Kind of makes me wish they'd get some motion control film cameras and reshoot the model shots from the show to replace those kind of bad cgi ones they did a few years back. If the original model shots aren't transferable, new model shots matched up as best as possible would be a lot nicer. But maybe that's just me.

I have a few comments regarding the Smithsonian restoration of the TOS 11 Foot Filming Model of the USS Enterprise. The Smithsonian should have made a backup copy of the starship out of modern / updated materials while they had it apart. The Starboard side of the starship copy could then have been made to appear whole without all the wires perturbing out of the neck and secondary hull and lack of details. I also believe the weathering on the model was unnecessary and simply added to the complexity of the restoration. I am still very grateful to the Smithsonian for preserving this iconic piece of Americana / Science Fiction. The Voyages of the Starship Enterprise will inspire numerous generations into the future to reach for the Star.

"Complicated History...it changed 4 times during filming, then 4 times during restoration." U.S.S. Enterprise Constitution Starship Class NCC 1701, one of 13 original starship heavy cruiser (CH) class one vessels, the second to be constructed in 2218 A.C./2245 A.D.; refitted to Bonhomme Richard (CH 1712) subclass during 2250s A.D. then Achenar subclass (CH 1732) in 2267 A.D., model showcased at the Smithsonian. While the actual ship would undergo a last upgraded refit during StarFleet's heavy cruiser 3 stages uprating program for both aging vessels and newer starship class vessels from the various heavy cruiser subclasses of three previous upgrades in a period of nine standard earth years (2266-2275 A.D.) to modernize them by 2280s extended service for another 20 years until honorable retirement service by 2295. Those were relatively newer hauls but outdate in recent late 23rd Centuries technological advancements; the program was to facilitate the incorporation for all three stage as either hybrid design of old and new tech as well as entirely refit new haul designs conducted from the late 2260s and early 2270s. The Enterprise (I) Class was the last of these 3 stage separate project but the first starship to begin; entering dry dock for 18 month refit upon returning from it historic five year mission under Captain James Tiberius Kirk command on 07 APR 2212 Alpha Centauri (A.C.) Martian solardate [Enterprise star date 7523.2] "the vessel earned a distinction unparalleled in Star Fleet history; of the original thirteen Constitution (I) class vessels launched, USS Enterprise alone had not been lost or destroyed in the line of duty" retaining her original command crew from the start of her initial launch on her fourth five year exploratory mission tour. Starship individual ship insignia employed since United Earth Space Probe Agency was grandfather only to the 13 original Constitution class but Enterprise 1701 historic legacy return for deep space exploration ship emblem was adapted to honor the crew in the 2250s. With only the initial original 13 Starship class design (the original Constitution class MK IX 1700-1712, including Constellation NCC 1017 cruiser [CA 1000 Horizon class]& Republic NCC 1317 [CA 1370 Archon class refitted]) all fifteen upon their initial launch to participate in the Historic Five-Mission Exploration Campaigns continued the UESPA traditions of individual insignia to distinguish these first ship of the line "starship class" from the rest of the fleet; retaining unique service in recognition from their individual achievement, compare to the other ships that would later join it the mission assignment. (Editor's Note: So as to illustrate that the Enterprise wasn’t the “only outstanding efficient ship” in the fleet) Hence why most of the ships of these early classes commission plague noting it as a "starship class” and instead of “Constitution class” for which the class was original recognize as based up UESPA contract registry but under UFP listing registry as Constitution and in Starfleet as Heavy Cruiser Class One Mark IX. It is literally a badge of honor for any who serve board any of these 15 original starship but tragically with their continue service between 2239-2265 most won’t survive intact or with their original command crew. It would be during Captain Pike command on Enterprise second and last of two five year-mission era accomplishment that honor his achievement in which Starfleet would adapt the Enterprise insignia to represent those who service onboard starship duty fleet wide around 2250s thru 2277; while those who served on starbases Ground Duty large gold starburst cluster and Starfleet Academy Cadet a silver starburst cluster, along with many commercial/auxiliary/mercahant duty of UESPA fleet line service would transition gradually away from the ship logo insignia warn on the uniform until the 2270. “Starfleet’s tradition of honoring the original starship Enterprise… bears the original Starfleet registry (naval construction contract) number of that illustrious first (starship class) Enterprise, NCC-1701”…with a suffix A thru Z for the successors to bear the name. “Few other ships in the Starfleet have been so recognized. So significant were the exploits of this original ship and its crew, that in 2277 the practice of having a separate insignia for each starship (starship fleet duty & star base shore)was abolished, and the Enterprise emblem was adopted as the official symbol for the entire Starfleet.” The refitted Enterprise Launched ahead of schedule responding and resolving the Vejur Incident and the following year defeated an entire Kzin task force, effectively ending the Kznti Incursion of 2272. In her fifth tour of UFP Treaty Exploration Territory boundary five year mission made contact with the Inari civilization bound sub quadrant 3 south in 2277. Upon a successful completion Enterprise was honor by assigning her to Starfleet Academy San Francisco that same year replacing USS Potemkin (CHT 1711) serving as a line training vessel (ATRA); such ship are assigned to rotate with each other from one Starfleet Academies facility throughout UFP principles stellar systems as a midshipman training vessels Temporary Assigned Duty (TAD). Potemkin command was at Starbase 4, then assigned at Starbase One Starfleet Academy facility to be retired and permanently berth there as a museum scheduled for 2290. Traditional training vessels are only assigned in areas of the innermost layer home sector, keeps it from harms way. The spherical defense duty of three layers for rapid response from the Fleet comprise of Star Fleet Reserve Force, Rapid Deployment Force, TacFleet, Star Fleet Active Exploratory organization patrolling UFP Treaty Zone: the first outmost frontier, second interior layer which includes neutral zone frontiers, the third innermost layer of the Home sector. "The Military Staff Committee and the Requirements Analysis Board issued a directive to decommission heavy cruisers of 20 plus years of service, specifically the Enterprise (I) class on a selected-vessel basis" as well as those of the recently refitted Constitution (II) aging classes.

USS Yorktown (CH 1704) Constitution (II) starship class was slated for retirement upon her last tour but with the new Enterprise (II) class order with a new hull registry (Hull registry later assigned to Levant CH 1843) was to bear the honorary name. Ironically, while returning to port for decommissioning, she encountered an alien probe during the Whale Song Crisis in 2286; her Chief Engineer successfully implemented a makeshift "solar sail" that enable her under her own ship's power to make it to port without being tow but more importantly without any loses to her crew. This distinction from her command crew earned USS Yorktown a reprieve on an extension after a minor ship repair for another five years assignment on active duty in quadrant zero (AO) and slated for retirement as a museum upon completion. USS Levant was then proposed prior to construction as the new class based on Enterprise (I) design with an order of seven new ships hull number registry 1800 series (CH 1843-49) shared with the Tikopai (CH 1800) subclass original order 43 [1800-1832 ] as exploratory cruiser (CE) later changed to heavy cruiser in 2272. The decision for selected decommissioning was reversed by Chief of Star Fleet Operations less than four months later with all Enterprise class for refitting but with the heavy damaged sustain on Enterprise "training cruise" as well as consideration of her age disqualified her for the upgrade program and was slated for decommissioning. Tragically NCC-1701 (CHT) severed as a training vessel from 1977 through 1983 before she could be decommissioned was destroyed in a Klingon encounter that remains classified. USS Ti-Ho NCC-1798 hull registry originally authorized on star date 5930; (1732-1842) for 111 ships were pr oposed with the assigned name USS Czar'ak (CH 1798) Achenar starship subclass, construction order. This large order number based upon projection to the escalation in rising hostility along with neighboring neutral zone frontier border of the Gorn, Tholian, Kzin, Klingon and Romulan, but as expectation and confidence for open conflict decline; Star Fleet reduced the order to 68, then to realistic manageable 13 in the class [1732-44] with the modernization fleet upgrades on the previous classes in both Constitution & Bonhomme Richard heavy cruiser classes to be included this time without Enterprise among them. The Czar'ak was cancelled and hull registry reassigned to Ti-Ho; the named was originally considered for the Endeavor subclass newly builded order, until it was decided instead reserved for the Enterprise (II) subclass MK 9B construction order and to also be the testbed host for the new Leading Engine, Ltd FTWG-1 transwarp drive experiment contract. Possessing the best warp dynamics, versatility and survivability universal design like the Constitution class before; the Enterprise subclass are also utilized for most of the newly developments, advancements within spaceflight and weapons technologies which are first tested in these classes. Although the Ti-Ho post-shakedown availability (PSA) schedule for a normal three months period, her returned from her first stage of deep-space shakedown trials was only three weeks cut short, before it was cancelled and was rushed for an early launched commissioning ceremony, where she would be renamed one final time. Many in the Admiralty believe this rush into service based only on "successful computer simulation" may have led to the "Transwarp Drive Incident" that would follow; again status classified restricting any details. In further gratitude, Star Fleet Command elected to rechristened the new Enterprise (II) class, Ti-Ho with "Enterprise" and retaining her naval construction contract hull registry was also once again changed but adapting 1701-Alpha" given to command by the demoted Admiral Kirk for action in disobeying from a superior flag officer but honored with the rank of Fleet Captain for his accomplishment. From the Enterprise (II) class making the last newly constructed of these classes to be USS Alliance (CH 1849) on 2290. For the other Class One Starship, Starfleet would end the uprating with USS Endeavor (CH 1716) class, which was design to begin the first stage integration newer vessel with outdate tech, and with USS Constitution (II: CH 1700) as "the middle stage" older class merging that of old and new technologies. Always advancing forward, looking towards the innovation vision of the future, Star Fleet Military Staff Committee was looking for the next generation successor to the Enterprise class for the 24th century to utilize transwarp engines exploration to safely pierce the outer Galactic Energy Barrier. Built by Shuvinaaljis Warp Technologies, specifically for a new battleship class, that later was reclassified as Space Control Ship (SO) Experimental (SOX) design program (SCS) in the Excelsior/Ingram class starship. Only USS Excelsior (NX/CH 2000) would have a proposed contract order for 98 to replace and retire the aging Constitution based design adapting the classification as the new heavy cruiser class by 2300 A.D., with USS Ingram (SOX 2001) starship the only of its class produce retrofitted with a standard advanced LN-72 linear warp engine replacing the transwarp unit, as was Excelsior, then assigned to TacFleet. USS Enterprise (CH 1701-A) was decommissioned due heavy primary hull structure damaged in 2292 and was decided with the second Excelsior class upgrade variant vessel USS Merrimac (SO/CH 2015) whose construction began in 2288 A.D. would be rechristened "Enterprise-B" upon her completion 2293, when it was decide to decommission Enterprise-A but like her predecessor before, would be plagued by a rush into service in a baptism of fire on a response to a rescue mission El-Aurian refugees that would result in the injuries of several crew and the death to delegation of honorary guest Retired Fleet Captain Kirk . Unfortunately, the model for the Refit Enterprise was sold at auction to a private owner. I would love for someone to build one to the exact same scale as this one! And display it right beside!!!

The team who built the refit Enterprise tried a few years ago to build a new model for public display but they were unable to raise enough money to fund the effort.

I’ve recently noticed that when the model was taken apart the internal rotating domes were silvered and tapered to a point, kzbin.info/www/bejne/eV7Wq3xmmbGHjqM (about 1.30 in) yet on re-assembly they are black, almost straight and don’t go into the centre, anyone know what happened there?
@SuperLuigiSixty4

I saw in a different video (one of the short ones on Trek Core) that they ended making a whole new light assembly for the domes, with a much smaller motor and LEDs for the lights. Easy to fix and won't generate heat.

@@SuperLuigiSixty4 oh I understand the need for the motor and light change, but I’m confused as to why the change in the internal rotating dome, why not use or replicate the originals? It changes the look.
@ebt12
@ebt12 2 жыл бұрын
The dome effects seen when it was taken apart was probably from the 1991 restoration. I applaud the effort to have something akin to the original effect, better than the previous effect of the whole dome blinking.

like Trekkies over the years (ie the Snl Get a Life skit, etc), the no bloody A B C or D 1701 has suffered it’s share of disrespect I saw her at the Smithsonian 2001, long before this restoration, relegated to the off the beaten path basement gift shop!? It was more painful to see her there in the state she was in than being ridiculed as a kid for being a Trekker

Ezekiel P, you're wrong. The musical theme is from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". Precisely from the scene in which then-Admiral Kirk sees the refurbished Enterprise for the first time. I can't imagine a more fitting theme for this video.
