How Do You Dock a Ship Into a Port That's 200 Feet Short?

The Viking Sea is docking into the Scottish port of Lerwick. It's a major challenge considering the port is over 200 feet shorter than the ship. Can the staff captain in charge dock without causing damage?

So, that's Lerwick? It's smaller than I thought it was going to be. I read that Lerwick has an art museum, a modern-art museum, a natural history museum, a planetarium, 2 universities, a 42 acre botanical garden, 7 nightclubs, 3 Michelin Guide restaurants, 22 pubs, and a 12,000 square foot roller disco with free admission to all cruise guests.

Those rubber fenders shown at 2:52 are not meant for that sized vessel. When I was a student at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in UK , about 60 years ago, I was asked to develop a velocity metre which would measure a maximum speed of 0.25 metres every minute and an accelerometer to find the acceleration of a ship that size, so that one day, a fully automatic berthing system would be achieved. When you see the engineering in a modern ship coupled to the navigation accuracy that exists these days, one can thank God for Engineers and the Deck boys who operate the equipment provided for them. I am sure that they prefer to operate our engineering potentiometers to control those electric motors which can act as thrusters in any direction , rather than the ropes sail spars of the tea clipper Cutty Sark which was built in Scotland incidentally. Knowing the ropes with out engineering equipment take a different meaning and less effort of knowing the ropes on a tall sailing ship. I am sure that both the captains and the pilot in this video would agree on that.

🛳 *@**1:53** ~ Why do both those guys have four stripes on their shoulders, both the captain and 1st officer / staff captain? I see that one of the captain’s stripes are thicker than the others, but I always thought the first officer/staff captain only had three stripes.*
@liam3292

Types of epaulettes depends on the cruise line. bigger ships needs more officers and smaller ones needs less. But as you can see in the video the captain has 4 lines with one thicker line at the base. The staff captain (not 1st officer) has 4 lines. Same as chief engineer and hotel director. The chief officer has 3 lines, the 1st officer has 2 lines and one thinner between the two lines. The 2nd officer has 2 line and the 3rd officer has 1 line and one thinner line above. As I said in the beginning the epaulettes depends on the cruise line and the size of the ship.

It's a cruise ship thing. Not all ships have a staff captain. Technically the first mate is in charge of the deck department, and on merchant vessels he's the one who assumes command of the vessel in absence of the captain/master

The only reason the staff captain got to dock the ship was because the captain did not want to be liable for destroying a 300 million dollar vessel

The Master decides as to who does the berthing.there is a certain share of berthing that have to be done among them.the St.Capt. then gets to demonstrate his proficiency in dealing with Maneuvers in diffrent sea and wind conditions.
