--------
In this clip, Smokey Robinson recounted hearing the news of Marvin Gaye’s passing which came on April Fool’s Day. He initially thought it was a sick joke but later had the worse news confirmed. Smokey said he only learned about Marvin’s tumultuous and traumatic relationship with father after he had already killed him.

You did a great interview with a national treasure. Very difficult to cover every aspect of an overused title of living legend; the cascade of characters of who and what they inspired. Not for nothing Vlad, but this dude created what we now know as "gaslighting". Consider of you will the evidence of a song he wrote and preformed, only to have the J5 do another remake called The Love I Saw In You. Bless yourself and check it out.

This story is so sad. My father told me he was in California during this time (my father moved from Nigeria to the US and hadn’t lived in the US for long during this time). He was riding his bike not even realizing he wasn’t that far from Marvin Gaye home when it happened. As he was bike riding, he heard the constant sound of police cars and he was wondering what was happening and heard the news not long after that. Wow!

He felt the death energy, but could not identify where it would be coming from. It showed up as paranoia. Im assuming he felt safe with his kinfolk. It is so easy to dismiss people as crazy but I learned through experience when something feels off or weird it usually is. I love his music.

Marvin Gaye, was brilliantly ahead of his very time. The man is perhaps IMO the greatest male voice I've ever heard...he made epic ballads, socially ingenious songs, great love making songs, true uplifting songs, etcetera.. I'm so sad this happened to MG, I truly believe the industry has always been a wicked, wicked place and it always seems our greatest singers and entertainers leave this earth before it's their time.... SAD. SAD. SAD!!!
@rickimhotep1236

The World is a wicked place. What goes on in the world outside of the "industry" is savagery. Fame is a drug that causes/caused a lot of our entertainers to turn to hard drugs to keep up the energy and facade of being famous. It's all driven by that dollar bill, and as the Bible says.....! The devil rules this world and nobody can escape him because EVERYONE is dependent on his dollar to live.

I could hardly wait to give birth to my son and when Marvin went on tour, I knew I would be there!!!! I was so upset and depressed over his Dad killing him, that I went into a deep depression. I demanded from my husband that I had to attend Marvin’s funeral. But of course, that didn’t happen.😕 I was inconsolable for a very long time over Marvin’s death. 😢

Like Smokey, I remember Marvin's death vividly. I was a young man in my 20s, a newlywed, my wife and I having been married at the time for a little over 4 months. It was on a Sunday evening, April 1, 1984; it was what many people call "April Fool's Day". I was watching TV while my wife was in the kitchen, cooking, when I saw and heard on the screen "This is a Special Report"..."Singer Marvin Gaye has been shot to death”...I couldn't believe what I was watching and hearing on the TV screen. Like Smokey, I thought it was some kind of "April Fool's" joke, a sick joke, but it was no joke, it was a confirmed fact that he had indeed been shot to death. It was even more shocking that the shooter was his own father. It was on the day before what would have been Marvin's 45th birthday-April 2, 1984. Had he lived, he would have been 85 years old this coming April 2nd, 2024.

Marvin was very much underrated as a singer. A great talent he was. I was 14 when Marvin died. I wish his father had not done that. I love Marvin like I would one of my family members. His death saddens me to this very day. His music brings tears to my eyes. For he sang about the truth of this evil world. 😔😥

@Jim Crawford if you jam the Sexual Healing album in its entirety you’ll hear how he was able to transcend his sound with the times. He was prolific before and after WGO & LGIO. Have you heard I Want You or Here, My Dear? Genius don’t stop. And if not Marvin would have had a hell of a review tour. Just like Mike and Stevie did it, he’s cut from that same cloth. Hell they came up watching Marvin. But ig we’ll never know all and all sad story.

In the first part of the video you can still see the sadness and hurt on Smokey's face. :( Marvin was truly one of the greatest artists in music history IMO. There are only a handful of singers who can take some of the darkest themes and issues and turn it into beautiful music and music that seeks to uplift even if the subject is dire. His voice was that of an angel trapped in the body of a man. Marvin was totally ahead of his time too, he dabbled with sounds that presaged hip hop/rap with some of the songs on the Trouble Man album/film score, he was on the leading edge of the electronic music blend with R&B, he predated Barry White with the super sexual album suites and as with his want, Marvin put his own spin on it by trying to merge the sacrosanct with the profane. I don't think we'll ever find an artist again who was as unique as Marvin was. He was not only a genius in the studio but he was also a very well rounded person as he was spiritual, curious about the world around him and from all accounts, one of the most sensitive people you could ever meet.

I vividly remembered that April's Fool Day in 1984. I had just came back from seeing the Wiz with Stephanie Mills at the former Shubert Theater in Philadelphia. I was on a trip with the Cub Scouts. As my den mother was giving me a ride home it was announced on the radio that Marvin was killed in Los Angeles at the hands of his father. It left me very confused and scared. As for Smokey, he looked very uncomfortable when it came to the subject of Marvin.

Jealousy kills. Dad is living in the house his son bought. Everyone in the family looks to Marvin as the head of the house, not the Dad. The Dad just has to accept that. Dad disrespects mom, Marvin defends mom and gets in Dad's face, Dad won't back down, Marvin humiliates Dad, Dad gets gun and kills him. This story is older than the Bible. Jealousy kills
