Thank you for watching my Brisket video. Check out what I think is the absolute best pellet currently on the market. Many backyard cooks want more smoke flavor from their pellet smokers and here's your answer. smokinpecan.com/

To remove any doubt, the test should be repeated, but swap which smoker has which pellets. If the Treager pellets perform the same as the 1st test, then it’s the pellets. If they perform better on the 2nd test, then it’s the differences in the smokers. Not defending Treager, just recommending complete testing.

The larger smoker also has a larger surface area. This leads to more convection and therefore more heat loss. I would appreciate it if you would do another test with the exchange of pellets.

Thanks Michael. I'll have to let my funds recover after this one. I actually gave the Traeger brand the upper hand buy using them on my YS1500. The YS1500 produces a more smoky flavor that's really close to an offset because of its design. The YS1500 had a heat management plate with different size holes that allows more smoke and small flames to come up and flavor the proteins. I've used other brands on my YS1500 including Smokin' Pecan and I've never burned through this many pellets. Thanks for watching 👍

Try using the Traeger pellets in BOTH smokers for a side by side test to determine whether it was the pellets or the size difference of the two smokers which caused the larger one to consume at a higher rate. With more surface exposed to the outside temperature you should expect the to larger smoker to use more pellets. Once again, in the 18 minutes it took to watch your video, I almost starved to death.!

The Traegers really aren't a good value. They cost out the wazoo and do not perform well. Bear Mountain are good if you live close to a local Academy or a local grocery that carry them. Pit Boss aren't world class, but they are a good value. Really cost effective, and available at WalMart. Usually my second choice when my grocery is out of Bear Mountain.

I finally bought a tailgate pellet cooker. Used traeger pellets because it was a combo deal. My wife and I wondered why the cooker won’t reach a higher temp sometimes. We tried a different brand of pellets - and boom! Temp went higher easily. Not to knock traeger pellets with my limited experience with pellet cookers - but it sure seems that they don’t stack up to some other brands. Ordering the pecan pellets now! Thanks Joe!

So I have done a few smokes now, (Pastrami,Brisket, Chuck Roast Burnt ends and sausage). The Smoking Pecan Shell Pellets are fabulous. Great smoke and taste. You can see and taste the difference, I have used just about all other pellets. These work. I also like their box they come in. I think they are more expensive, but I don't care about that at all.

I concur. I have been using my pellet smoker for about a year. I have been burning B&B or Bear Mountain brands. Last weekend I smoked a pork belly using Traeger Pecan pellets. What a difference! The Traeger burned like pulp wood. I easily used twice the amount of pellets for the same smoke AND there was a huge pile of ash in the firepot and bottom of the smoker. Won't be using Traeger pellets again.

Awesome video Joe! I have to say, I bought my 1500 becuase of your videos. That pellet consumption is similar to what I see on my 1500 in the winter months here in Michigan. I did try traeger pellets in mine and noticed a not so Smokey flavor, thus a switch to bear mountain bbq pellets and have seen better results as far as smoke flavor. I’d be curious to see 2 more comparisons: Swap the pellets between the 640 and 1500. Wood in the 640 and pecan in the 1500 And to use a a different pecan pellet besides the traeger to see if it’s an actual quality of pellet for the cause of high consumption.

Nice review Joe. I got a Weber SmokeFire and it's a pellet hog. Used Smokin' Pecan on a 13 hour pork butt and went through about 13-14 pounds. I normally use pecan pellets from Lumberjack and usually go through 18-20 pounds on a pork butt. My results are kind of similar but the difference was not as extreme but Lumberjack is a better pellet than Treager, at least from all I've read.

I did a brisket with the pecan shell pellets as well. The smoke flavor was very pronounced vs my regular lumberjack char hickory. Very good flavor. I also found I burned about 18# of pellets on an 11 hour cook. I usually go through 13-14# of lumberjack. The flavor in my opinion is worth the cost difference. I used a porter road brisket for the first time with these pellets and it was very good. But the extra money for the brisket and pellets ($155) I consider a treat and will probably stick to the choice packets I can get locally and the lumberjack pellets for my cooks. And will use my reverse flow offset with hickory if time allows to get the smoke. I tried traegar pellets one time, never again. Cost more and burn up fast and produce way more ash. Awesome video, keep up the great work.

Both looked great Joe. I wonder if the pellets affected the ring or if possibly the briskets just may have coke off differently aged beef. Do you feel the larger chamber contributes to more pellet use? That is a ton pellets to use, would more thermal mass inside the chamber help? I’ve always been told that pellets lack smoke flavor due to them burning too clean. (The wood making them is too clean) so I makes since for the shells to have better smoke and flavor, in my opinion. Great video Joe.

You will also consume more fuel for the larger smoker, the 1500 has 2x the area to heat and maintain a constant temp. So it’s not 100% comparative to say it’s the pellets cooking hotter so it consumes less. Switch the pellets on the smokers and I bet you will still consume more on the 1500.

What percentage of the pecan wood pellet was actual pecan wood? The package says its a blended hardwood. Could have hickory, alder and other woods in it causing the faster burn and lighter flavor. The pecan shell pellets were 100% pecan shell. IMHO, the results would have been improved if the brand in the 1500 was 100% pecan wood pellets. The burn rate might not change, but the smoke flavor could be more infused in the meat. Great video though.

I've always been curious as to using nut shells (pecan, walnut, etc) to create better smoke flavor using a pellet grill, so thanks for doing this. It is interesting to see that basically a "waste" product (pecan shells) is so expensive at $33 for 20 pounds (where as even "premium" pellets like Knotty Wood are $24 for 20 lbs) Sounds like a lot of profit margin for Smokn' Pecan. I've always avoided the Trager pellets and your test just confirms that. They are a "pecan blend" so hard to know what percentage is actually pecan wood vs other compressed wood dust.

Not sure if Jealous Devil makes a 100% pecan pellet… Lumberjack does. It’s all the additives in Traeger pellets that causes the fast burn. At $32 a 20# bag for the Smokin’ Pecan, I’d be forced to use them in my Silverbac for lesser cooks like chicken, pork ribs, tri tips. Say $60 for a Costco brisket, and around $28 for fuel. Wow that’s crazy. I couldn’t afford to cook as many briskets as I do burning 35lbs per cook

Well, Traeger is all about the brand, not necessarily the quality. I have never liked their smokers or their pellets. My Yoder YS640 is better and the Lumber Jack Pellets or even the Pit Boss Pellets from WalMart are better than the Traeger pellets...IMO!

Well you know what they say about pellets first of all, and well it's Traeger...enough said.

You must've missed math class too many days. $1.65 per pound x 16.5lbs used is $27.22. vs $35.00 in Traeger pellets. Thanks for watching and don’t forget to smash the subscribe button.👍

I haven't been able tot find any manufacturer making 100% pecan wood pellets. Lumber Jack used to make them until a few years ago (their current pecan is a blend with red oak). The Traeger brand you used is also a blend and is not even close to 100% pecan. Your claim of 100% pecan wood pellet in your comparison is false.

YS 640 looks overcooked. Turned out fall-apart mushy.

Why would you use pecan with a brisket anyway? For me, its Oak or nothing when it comes to brisket. Pecan is just not a strong enough smoke to add flavor to a big dense protein. Try it again but use good oak pellets. Not the traeger brand!

Nah..oak is ok but is by far not the best wood for brisket. But we all have OUR on opinion..kind of like your favorite rub. We are all different.

Pecan is actually really good for smoked brisket. I've done it on my offset and the flavor is just as good as oak. It all comes down to personal preference. 👍

I enjoyed the pecan shell smoke on my brisket. I prefer hickory, oak is pretty mellow.

@keithtrosen7954 the nice thing is you can add a couple hands full of these smokin pecan pellets and add them to your Hickory pellets. 👍
