Thank you for showing the full process. Most others don’t show the sandpaper step but they mention it which is not really helpful. So thank you!

Thank you Lena, glad the video is doing the trick. I really think a lot of commercial canvasses are too rough if you are working with thinner paint layers. Happy painting!

Very good. I needed a refresher course and you nailed it! I see some folks sand in between coats, you save it till the end. I will try this. Thanks again and have fun painting!
@KRHArtLessons5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. You could sand lightly between layers too. Somehow I find that it works just as well to wait till the end, and it's less time, as you don't have to wait for it to dry completely between layers, just so it's dry to the touch. If you sand between you have to leave it till it's super dry.
@cyborgdrummer15 жыл бұрын
@@KRHArtLessons Thank you. Yes I have been waiting and just sanding once after all my coats have been applied, and have thoroughly dried. It is working out great! Have a fun day!

I discovered that the acrylic is plastic and heat melts it and makes it runny. Too much heat and it will burn and bubble. You have to learn when enough drying is enough. I use 1,500 watt dryer which is about as hot as you can get for a dryer. I bought mine from eBay to use on other projects. When I piled on the gesso and there were steaks ruining overt the surface and immediately used the dryer over the surface, the gesso smoothed out uniformly while drying.
@KRHArtLessons2 жыл бұрын
hmm.. I've never used a dryer for this purpose, but I can imagine it would work well. I am okay with some streaks, some texture. If the surface gets too uniform and smooth, it will be hard to paint on as well.

The problem I have with commercial gesso is that I can't sand it. It's so rubbery that it comes of in chunks like eraser on paper. Will try to dilute my gesso to see if I can get a surface with little or no sanding. Thanks for sharing. ❤️👍🏻
@KRHArtLessons2 жыл бұрын
that's a good point. Maybe let it dry longer before sanding? I use Soho Art Materials' gesso, it's a really good quality gesso, maybe that's why it sands better. less filler, more good ingredients... Try a good brand like Liquitex, or W&N.

Abigail, thank you for your feedback. I always struggled to find the right kind of surface for painting detail on canvas, that's why I thought it was a good idea to do the video. Of course you can use a panel, which is great for detail too, just different.

Thank you Kirstine, this is really helpful :) What are your feelings about oil gesso? I haven't used it because it involves such a longer waiting time between layers drying, so I wonder if there are any benefits to it?
@KRHArtLessons3 жыл бұрын
Hi Charlotte, glad you enjoyed the video. I have made oil ground, I used over a period of several years. I made it myself using chalk, pigment, rabbitskin glue and linseed oil (I think it was a faster drying type). You only need 1-2 layers,and it actually dried fairly fast. You have to work fast when you apply it. Now, there are also commercial oil grounds/gessos out there, I think W&N makes one. Oil attaches better to oil products, as opposed to acrylic/water based gesso, which don't really have an affinity, that is why it makes sense for oil painters to work with it.

Is it possible to get a smooth texture similar to paper? So that the texture won't be visible on a very thin layers of paint.
@KRHArtLessons4 жыл бұрын
I think it's possible, but be prepared to paint many layers and sand in between. or, consider using a panel instead of canvas. Then you would use gesso made for hard surfaces, f.ex. from the brand 'Golden' , this makes it much easier to sand. But again, many layers to get a super smooth surface.

I believe you can use GOLDEN Sandable Hard Gesso for wood panels, or any rigid surface. Cannot be used on stretched canvas though. I don't believe you need to prime the surface first.

Does this work for pencil and charcoal on canvas to hold layers with out falling off or smudging to much?
@KRHArtLessons2 жыл бұрын
you mean, if it works for drawings instead of paint? I haven't actually done that. I imagine you would want to use fixative between the graphite or charcoal layers.I've drawn onto gessoed panel, but not gessoed canvas. Let me know if you try it on canvas..

Yes for drawing. I did it it was challenging to do pencil on gesso.

Hi.I gessoed my canvas and there paint streaks all over the canvas.How do I get rid of them?
@KRHArtLessons4 жыл бұрын
that can be so annoying. If there's very clear paint brush texture, then you might want to sand the paint stroke texture away in between each layer of gesso until it's smooth, instead of at the end. Do quite a few layers until there's only little texture left. Beware if you are using a gesso that is very elastic, then it can be trickier to sand it off. High quality gesso is important.

about gesso... yes, if you do anything long enough, and the tradition has a history expansive enough, you will have to deal with changing terms. language is a living evolving medium all its own. so, i totally get your frustration, as i have my own sticking points like that, but in terms of language, the rule is majority rules. if usage of a term becomes common enough, it becomes the new norm. tried to follow one of your links to see your work, but the link is broken (another video links to a blog?)

KZbin doesn't allow me to add too much of links right now, but that will change. Gesso! Majority rules, probably old school gesso should now be called chalk gesso. Thank you for the feedback (-:

HOW MUCH IS ONE'S TIME WORTH? I BELIEVE IN RECYCLING USED CANVAS FOR PRACTICE ONLY. IF YOU'RE TRYING TO RECYCLE CANVAS TO BE USED FOR REAL GOOD PAINTING THIS IS NOT WORTH THE EFFORT. IMAGINE HOW MUCH TIME AND MONEY (IN GESSO) ARE SPENT IN TRYING TO RECYCLE THE CANVAS (SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO PUT UP TO 4 LAYERS TO ACHIEVE GOOD RESULT + THE TIME TO LET EACH LAYER DRY)? RECENTLY, I BOUGHT TOP OF THE LINE #3 CANVAS FOR PROFESSIONAL, VERY SMOOTH AND READY TO USE AT 70% OFF. A 16x20 COST $9.60; 18x24 FOR $12. IF YOU WAIT FOR A GOOD SALE ON GOOD QUALITY CANVAS, YOU'D BE BETTER OFF. AGAIN, TO SAVE CANVAS FOR PRACTICE ONLY AND IF YOU HAVE ALL THE TIME TO DO THIS, THIS IS A GOOD METHOD.
@KRHArtLessons4 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your feedback. My idea with this video was that even high quality canvas, even stretched with linen, can have too much texture for very fine detailed work. Then it's a good idea to do the extra work of gesso and sanding. I agree though, that recycling old canvases is not a good idea, also because you actually can't use gesso on top of oil paint.
