No the attack is just an illusion. Hence it never being able to kill but applying so many statuses. Sephiroth is one of the strongest final fantasy villains in terms of mind controlling capabilities but his raw power is rather low.

@@ultimaterecoil1136 It's not an Illusion according to Ultimania the attack transports the party to an alternate dimension in the process of destruction to a supernova. This was actually verified by many VS. researchers to gage sephiroths power and Clouds durability. It is likely summon magic as reality (screen breaks like glass) is shifted to transport the party. KOTR does the same thing. It was even described as a dimensional attack in dissidia. "Bringing destruction through dimensional space" Also supernova doesn't apply status effects. It reduces the party HP to near death. This is why Cloud and parties durability is reliably set to Solar System level.

If it wasn’t an illusion then there was no need for the black materia as sephiroth could just steal a meteor from another reality to damage the planet. If he had the power to transport things to and from other realities there would of been no need to manipulate mind of cloud to get the black materia. Also worth considering that an illusion makes a lot of sense for an attack that leaves you on 1/16th hp and confused to potentially cause the characters to kill themself and sephiroth has shown the power to manipulate minds in the past. So what makes more sense? That sephiroth has a power that quite frankly could of gotten him to win immediately he never used it and instead wanted the black materia even though it was unnecessary and he only uses that power in one boss fight? Or he used an ability which generally fits the theme of his shown powers? It’s the second and if it was intended to be the first it’s a massive plot hole and the game is poorly written due to the goal of the cast stopping sephiroth from using the black materia is based on said plot hole and the game is poorly written due to this. Or it’s an illusion designed to make the characters off themselves and it’s a very fitting ultimate attack for how sephiroth is portrayed in the game.

I'm basing this on the ultimania and how Square themselves describe the attack in other game. Warping a small party of people to an alternate dimension where a supernova is occurring is quite different than warping the entire planet or pulling the supernova itself into his dimension. It is likely summon magic like every other summon that uses dimensional shifts. It doesn't really need to be easily explainable or realistic, it's a fantasy games. You have your opinion and I have mine. It's cool. I tend to agree with the assessments of those related directly to Square or of VS. Battles researchers when they source their data from Square material.

I mean, there was this giant mutant tentacle-man, and the screen flashed green for a while, then there was a ten-minute animation of the solar system being destroyed by a meteor, then the tentacle man fell into the sun while the three characters watched from a few feet away in space, then they were fighting again, then Yu-Gi-Oh monster came down from space (earth has grown back by now) and Fired its Lazor. How could any game's story possibly put this into context?

Mycaruba Also, JRPG attacks and spells are supposed to be exaggerated even within the context of the game. It's quite common for an attack to destroy the nearby area/country/planet/solarsystem/galaxy/universe during it's animation but then only deal 9999 damage to one guy (while the rest of the combatants are unscathed).

The only problem is the accent. Latin has more of a Spanish/French accent, but he is using an American one.

@@GOATaro_ Latin's essentially spoken the way it's written. If you want to really add an accent to it, you'd need to add an Italian one. Like if you went "puh-che" instead of "puh-keh", you'd not be super duper wrong, but the latter would still be more widely understood. He pretty much summons a comet to the solar system, heading for the sun, smashing a few planets on the way. It hits the sun, which bulges up and essentially goes supernova, and the blast destroys Mercury, Venus, and then heads towards Earth (Gaia, the Planet, whichever i can't remember 😅). The graphics back then... Well kinda obvious it doesn't look so great anymore. If they redo this whole sequence with today's cgi and computing power... 🤤🤤🤤🤣
