One thing about the "gold digger" story that didn't come up: Jill apparently grew up poor and her family relied on food banks -- so OF COURSE she likes to take her friends out for nice meals now that she has disposable wealth! As a person whose best guy friend growing up was super poor and his mom had a ton mental illness so she was always job hopping keeping them continuously poor, I often had him come over to my house for sleepovers and my parents would treat us to take out or wed go to the movies or go on vacations or whatever. My parents treated him like he was part of the family and had no issue paying for another kid when spending time with him made us both incredibly happy. He eventually went to college for basically free and got a great job at verizon and I'll never forget him buying me something for my birthday one year and it was a really nice egyptian scarab beetle wood carving with hieroglyphics carved on the bottom. When we were in high school and middle school he'd make me homemade gifts which were beautiful and I i remember one of our mutual friends letting slip he'd asked the art teacher for a bit of clay to make me a necklace or thread to make me a bracelet and the amount of though my friend put into things that meant so much more than had he bought me something at a store. Anyway, he was SO proud after all the years of being friends to take the bill from the table when we went out to lunch with a smirk and say "i got this". He then met a guy from a decently well off family while in college and he changed a lot personality wise after that so we drifted apart as friends (and his bf then husband didn't like how close we were) and they moved far away, but bottom line, you should be happy when your friends are happy and successful, not bitter and envious.

@@MaybeAnnatarEh, the N64 definitely aged a lot, but I’m not familiar enough with other consoles of the time to know if it’s a lot worse compared to the others. The controller is pretty weird, but it never stopped my friends and me. Some of my friends owned a ps2, ps3, xbox 360, yet my N64 remained popular. I can imagine PS1 is easier to get into now, as the controller hasn’t really changed over time. The best games on the N64 are still pretty great, albeit graphically old. I was thinking about that too! @mattuwu9978 Жыл бұрын
If I ever have kids, they’ll absolutely be adopted, aiming between the ages of 5-16 (when chances of adoption absolutely plummet). I wouldn’t ever expect my potential kid(s)/adoptee(s) to view me as a parent, whether it’s 3 years down the line or 20 years down the line. Of course it would be great if I became a parental figure to them, but at the end of the day I would be just fine with being seen as a safe place to land when life gets tough - a resource for them to utilize if they need it.

This is why us gays make so many jokes questioning if the straights are ok because all of the jokes about straight people are of them hating their partners and it's sad. But in all seriousness it's societal pressure, we've been taught from little on up that if you aren't in a relationship you're failing. Why haven't you found your prince yet? With that too we don't ever see anyone breaking up in fairytales and society still views it in a bad light for many people so you end up feeling trapped

I think it’s that they find someone attractive physically/surface level but expect them to change their interests and *cough* allergic tolerance to fit their idea of what they want in a relationship once they’re already dating. It’s not ‘I want to care about what they’re interested in from the beginning’, it’s ‘we’ll get along eventually because that’s how relationships work, even if it means they have to change who they are.’ … clearly it doesn’t work out that well to expect your partner to completely scrap their personality or safety for you lol

The Daddy story made me think about how my nickname has always been "Mom". It started when I was younger in school, I was always known as "the mom friend" because I always had everything someone would need in my bag, and I was the one who gave good advice. We're in our mid twenties now, and my friends will call me when they're sad and my response is normally something like, "Come over, I'm making pesto tonight and we can watch movies". I always took care of those I cared about, and so people have always called me mom. And those who have called me Mom for the last decade now call my boyfriend of 5 years "Dad" not only because he's dating Mom, but also because he acts like their dad. He's the person they call to ask car questions to, he's the one they call when their sink is leaking, and he's the one they run they're boyfriends through to get "boyfriend material" approval from along with me. We have accepted our given roles as mom and dad.❤

For the Gigi/Luigi story, I’m Native American (Seneca specifically). Gigi in our language would be spelled Ji’ji’ (pronunciation is very close with a glottal stop between the syllables), which means evil spirits. So even on US soil the name can have a bad connotation. I also have a white great grandmother who goes by Gigi, we’ve told her the double meaning and she just laughed. There’s thousands of languages in the world and we give the words power. No point dwelling on connotations that have no bearing over your everyday life. Anyways, love the show!! Keep it up!!

Sometimes words means different things in different languages. The french word for seal is pronounced "fuck". The fact that the word pronounced like that is a swear word in English doesn't mean that the French have to change their word for seal. It's one thing to tell your grandmother that her name has a different meaning, but another to tell a new mom that she sealed up by naming her daughter something (edited to replace "dolphin" with "seal", cause it's been like 25 years since I learned that fact and mixed up my animals haha)

She's just completely jealous. The writer doesn't give a single example of the rich friend "flaunting her money." She treated her friends to dinner (sharing her money) and she talked about her birthday trip (sharing about her life). The writer also didn't say a single thing about the husband other than that he is rich, which means that is all that the WRITER pays attention to. As a couple they already had one thing in common (yoga) so there is no grounding in her claim that her friend is gold digging, she just happened to want someone with money, but she didn't even have a string of shitty rich partners just to use their money. The rich friend seems to have held out for an actual partner who is also rich. If anyone is the gold digger its the writer -- she doesn't like her friend at all, but is clearly hanging on for the benefits of having a rich friend!

The doctor said if he had continued to eat it, he probably would have had to have been hospitalized within the next couple months cuz his body wouldn't have been able to handle it. On the girlfriend who was obsessed with the 90s, a lot of that story was alerting me to her potentially being autistic. I'm autistic myself and listening to the same song or watching the same handful of things on repeat because of being fixated. My heart breaks for her because I've been treated badly by partners or family for my fixations, mainly them being 'childish'. Why can women never have hobbies? Why can men never express their emotions in a healthy way? :((( Also, as someone with skin sensitivities to certain synthetic fragrances (for example I break out in hives if I use scented laundry detergent) these things are not a joke 😭 and they are not fun at all! I've had to lay naked in the bathroom covered in calamine lotion from head to toe because one of my shirts got mixed in with my mom's laundry and got scented detergent in it and I was covered in hives that burned so bad that wearing clothes made me want to throw up. I disagree with Zach’s take, mainly cause it seemed like he read a lot into the story that wasn’t apparent. Not every kid especially at 16 is willing to take their parent’s significant other as a parental figure and no indication in the story that she wanted that. That can change with time but I can 100% see a scenario of the OP not being in the wrong on the basis that he has more of an “uncle” role in her life. This. In my last relationship i had conversations with my ex about what kind of relationship she thought I should develop with the kids. They still had their dad's in their lives and I was never trying to replace them. Did I love them and see them as my son's? Yes, but never would I call them my son's to them or in front of them nor would I push any sort of paternal relationship because that's not my place in their life. I will say, I regret getting emotionally invested in their happiness and growth and their lives because even though I was ready to leave my abusive ex I was nowhere near ready to leave children I'd sort of emotionally adopted as my own and I still find myself praying for their health and safety and happiness often. I miss my sons, and I say this to point out, someone else's relationship with their step children is really nobody else's business to decide, outside of the obvious "dont traumatize or abuse them"

Yes i was thinking the same thing! The post even mentioned the biological father passing away so it wouldn't shock me if this is the preferred dynamic in the family. I had an absent father myself and when my mother got into a new relationship (i was ten) it took us almost 7 years to truly get along BECAUSE he was insistant initially to be a father to me wich i really did not want (there waa some other stuff but this was a BIG factor why it took so long). Some children just don't want a replacement and it seemed clear to me in the way he spoke about the daughter that he does care just doesn't view himself as her dad. Defo think Zach jumped the gun with that take 😅

seconded. my parents divorced when I was 10, and my mom didn’t even start dating until I was already 16. I had absolutely no desire for another parental figure, and it was agreed that her new partner/common law would not be filling that role. obviously it never prevented either of us from helping each other out, but it never bridged into “parenting”. completely reasonable for this situation to be similar.

Zach is being needlessly harsh on OP in the murder house story. He's acting like OP thinks of his future step-daughter as his neice when that is not what he said. OP said he does not have a parental relationship with her. In the 5 years he has known her(from 11-16) he has not been parenting her, but rather has been dating her mother. OP never said anything about how he views or thinks of her, simply that he FEELS like more of an uncle figure instead of a parental figure. OP hasn't been in a position to actually be a father to her yet, so he doesn't feel like one, but he is going to great lengths to make her feel loved and welcome in his home because he clearly loves her and wants to develop that parent-child relationship with her.
@JMalaby89 Жыл бұрын
Yeah that was a weird moment, I honestly felt pretty uncomfortable with the intensity of that, combined with the fact that his take on step-parenting is really off. A step-parent should never assume a parental role without knowing for sure that it's what their stepchild wants.

I agree. If anything, I liked the OP for not being one of those step parents who imo creepily try to force the idea of them being a new parent onto a stepchild whom might not want that

Very well said, you put words to my thoughts exactly. I feel like there were a couple of times that Zach would make a snap judgment on a piece of a story, or have a slightly odd take, but that one genuinely a little off-putting.

There's literally nothing wrong with the "i feel more like an unce" line, as someone who has essentially had 3 different stepdads from like 3-11, 11-15, and 17-25 i can guarantee you they did not really feel like fathers. If anything i think he phrasesnit that way because the daughter doesn't see him in a parental role and he doesn't want to overstep.
@gman1515 Жыл бұрын
If my stepdad had tried to insert himself into a parental role I would have resented him so much for it. I already had multiple other people from my family step in to fill that role and I didn't even meet my stepfather until after he married my mom. I reckon the background of each person would heavily influence how they read into that. Maybe Zach has a step parent he's close to, or who really stepped up for him? For example, my parent calls his step-dad by his first name, but refers to him as "my parent" when talking about him otherwise.

As someone who has an allergy to nuts, but it isn’t lethal to my life, I won hundred percent understand the story with the nut allergy in the body wash. I’ve had people try to feed me walnuts before just because I’m not deathly allergic to them. But my mouth breaks out in horrendous sores on the inside and it’s impossible to eat anything for days at a time because of how painful it is. I literally bleed from the mouth if I have too many walnuts. And people think that allergies are not serious even if they’re not lethal. Seriously. Screw people like that.

I’m deathly allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, so allergic I can’t walk into candy stores without feeling lightheaded. And I’ve had people disregard it. One lady at an ice cream stand has a scoop and I asked if she could wash it because of my allergy, she was very rude the whole time and rolled her eyes at me, I had a reaction and in the middle of public was puking my guts out while we were on vacation. It was not fun. I’ve had people tell me stuff along the lines of “You have a serious allergy because god wants you to die”. One guy from church told me that, and I quote “My allergy is a curse form the demons, and to pray it will go away and I’ll be fine” People can for sure be stupid sometimes. Older people are (no offence) the worst when it comes to allergies because they don’t understand it and didn’t grow up around it, despite me having reactions in-front of my family, they still don’t believe in allergies. It’s pretty obvious because they have fed me stuff with my allergen in it while being fully aware it has my allergen in it. Schools are also annoying because kids in my class bring in food with peanuts and tree nuts on the daily. People sometimes just can’t wrap there minds around all of the crazy stuff people with allergies have to endure, it’s not just the food guys.

Zach kept saying how the future stepdad was treating Kim like a roommate, when he said he say himself more like an uncle? You'd be surprised about how caring a real uncle can be to their nieces and nephews. My uncle was definitely an amazing family figure in my life- not a father figure, but a caring man who I had a lot of fun with but also disciplined me when I needed it. It's hard to become a stepparent to any kid, especially a teenager. As long as you have a mutual understanding with the kid, like "hey I'm not your dad, do you want me to be? No?
