What would be your idea for a modern increase to the Royal Navy? With one caveat it would have to be at least practical, with public support and not OTT like rebuilding Warspite or giving everyone a personal aircraft carrier (although I do admit those would probably be popular with the public). Mine would be 2 cruisers (some sort of modern Kirov equivilant), 4 destroyers, 3 frigates, 1 helicopter carrier (bascially HMS Ocean), 6 submarines, 9 mine warfare vessels and 4 auxiliary vessels. And possibly the introduction of some AShM equipped corvette sized vessels would be a nice addition.

I understood that Von Spee was worried about HMAS Australia....so I was wondering how a battle between the East Asia Squadron and the Australian squadron sent to recapture Rabual would have went...assuming no tactical advantage other than between the ships themselves ((If my memory is correct, the Austalian Squadron was HMAS Austalia, the Town Class HMAS Melbourne & Sydney, The Challenger Class HMAS Encounter, The River Class HMAS Parramatta, Yarra & Warrego with the submarine HMAS AE2)

One thing I can't find any good sources on is this: a.) Why were almost all pre-WWI cruisers armed with guns only protected with gun shields and not enclosed turrets. The guns were also almost always mounted in single mounts instead of doubles. b.) Why did so few of these ships employ a unified centerline battery, with most ships having their guns spread out all over the ship, resulting in 8-12 gun armed ships only having measly 4-6 gun broadsides. c.) Why were superfiring gun mounts so rare on these cruisers? Even when guns were mounted ceterline, they were often level mounted.

You know what's ironic? An Aussie taking out the Jerries in the 1st WW, and the Jerries taking them back at the 2nd. Both Aussie ships are named Sydney. The 1st Sydney destroyed Emden, which, as stated, converted a merchant into the commerce raider Kormoran, and another commerce raider, also called Kormoran, destroyed the 2nd Sydney in WW2. Coincidence?
@MyLateralThawts5 жыл бұрын
This needs to be made into a movie. The prelude would be the capture and conversion of the armoured cruiser Kormoran from the First World War, with the pre-credit sequence ending with the defeat of the Emden by the HMAS Sydney. The rest of the story would be of the two WW 2 separate ships activities, culminating in their epic clash. The post credits should include the weird event where the German sailors, upon repatriation to Germany at the end of the war, are greeted by the sight of the “Straat Malakka” the very ship their vessel was disguised as at the time of the battle.

I have something a weak spot for the Dresden, she fought just 100 miles away from where i live and there is a Monument to Cradock in Coronel. It's also fascinating the story of the Dresden's crew. Among there, there was an officer named Wilhelm Canaris, later Chief of the German Intelligence (Abwehr), who negociated the surrender and the intern with chilean authories. After that, the sailors where sent to an island 30 miles away from Coronel and 3 miles away ashore where they built their own village until the end of the war. The last Dresden sailor came back to Germany in 1920, after 7 years being away.

Finally! I was born and raised in Emden, and while the current frigate Emden was still active, she often payed a visit to her home and was open to the public then. When I was younger I used to be climbing and running around the ship a lot every time she was lying in habour. It's still, to this day, the only ship in the German Navy that's allowed to carry the Iron Cross on its bow. Sadly she was decommissioned in 2013, and the cross is currently on display in Australia. Also another little interesting thing: The members of the original Emden's crew who managed to get back to Germany were allowed to add Emden to their respective surnames. My grandparents neighbors were descendants of one of the Emden's crew members, and their children who went to school with my mom still carry the 'Emden' in their name up to this day.

Hello Drach! Very nice video! I come from northern Germany, and therefore the marine is always close. Give me 2 hours by bike and I am at the Kiel Canal, which is where those two iconic photos of the Dresden and Emden were made. Sadly, the bridge shown in the photo has been broken down during the extension of the Canal (the other arc-bridge will be dismantleled in a few years :-(, but there is a model of it in the museum in Brunsbüttel, where the Canal starts. The model of the Dresden (despite some others...) is on my desk right now... maybe somedays i might take a photo there. I am REALLY looking foreward for your video about the Emden´s voyage. I always admire the way they fought and also like, that even the British press tipped their head for the captains (and his crew´s) chivalry. Shows that even as enemies, they could acknowledge that the others are fighting well and honurable. P. S.: Bad luck did not run out for the Russian 2nd pacific squadron after the battle of Tsushima... poor Zhemchug stayed in port, crew having some time off and then some cruiser comes around and hits it with torpedoes and guns, and no Kamschatka there to warn them!

Worth noting that the sinking of SMS Emden by HMAS Sydney was quite a big deal in Australia, given it was the first battle honours for the newly-formed Royal Australian Navy, the Emden's reputation and the comparitive proximity of the battle to Australia. That "Sydney' was the first of a famous line of ships in the RAN - upon scrapping, her foremast was placed at Bradley's Head in Sydney Harbour and is honoured by all RAN vessels that pass it. Drachinifels also does some foreshadowing here. Kormoran was the name of a German merchant raider in ww2. In November 1941, off the coast of Western Australia, she encountered the second HMAS Sydney, a light cruiser that had already done great credit to her name. Both ships were sunk in the ensuing battle - with many survivors from Kormoran, and none whatsoever from Sydney. There has been much discussion since, with a great deal of speculation about the battle, and whether key information was concealed at the time and/or has remained concealed since.

Very nicely presented. Sorry I'm late here. Been reading a bit about the 5 RN cruisers lost at Jutland. One of the theories for the survival of the Kaiserliche ships was the use brass cases for their propellant charges (the RN used canvas). However, German vessels were not immune. The only Battleship lost at Jutland was German, the Pommern, sadly exploding with all hands. Similarly the Prinz Adalbert and Undine. The Karlshrue suffered an accidental explosion. Possible future video? Cordite's instability has cost many lives. The loss of the USS Maine started a war. The last event was in the 1990s, think it was the USS Iowa. Could be a video there?

For anyone interested in Emden's story there's an excellent book describing her exploits, "The Last Corsair", unfortunately now probably out of print but available on the 2nd hand market. She was very unlucky in that when Captain Von Mueller decided to destroy the international cable station on the Cocos Islands HMAS Sydney (the first with that name) was only a few hours sailing away enroute to the Mediterranean escorting a troop convoy. With bigger guns and greater speed Sydney was able to stay out of range of Emden's guns while landing many rounds on the unfortunate German. As an Australian I am ashamed of the Sydney's actions following Emden's beaching on North Keeling Is. Though she was obviously out of the battle Sydney continued to fire on her (inflicting more caualties) because the crew had not lowered her ensign. To cap it off when the flag was finally lowered the Sydney left the scene to investigate what had happened on Cocos Is. some 20km away and didn't return to assist the wounded and dying Emden sailors until the following day. I have visited North Keeling Is. and dived on what little remains of the Emden in the 1980s and I have to say it is the most inhospitable place I have experienced. My only consolation in the poor treatment of Emden's survivors is that the Sydney's skipper, Captain Glossop, was British not Australian!!

SMS Cormoran is lying at the bottom of Apra harbor, Guam. It is a favored wreck diving site on Guam, and has taken more lives as a wreck than she ever did as a commerce raider. Scuttled on 17 April 1917 by her crew, the first war shot of WWI by the US Navy was fired over her bow to dissuade the German Captain from scuttling the vessel. He had her sunk anyway, at the cost of at least 7 crewmen, six of whom were recovered and buried in a cemetery on Guam with full military honors. I can't find exact numbers, but there have been sport diving deaths in her since the mid 1950s. I was stationed on Guam from 1978 to 1981 and there were at least two deaths per year in that period. Divers running out of air in the hulk at 100', trying to breathe the accumulated gases in the voids of the ship that were products of old diving air and gas from the deterioration of the bunker coal that fired her tended to die in the ship. Many others got killed by the bends for staying down too long. The submarine tender I was on at the time had a decompression chamber intended for the assigned Navy divers, but was used many times to treat sport divers who had failed to follow dive tables.
