I'm a founder of canada cup and was a director for this event. The staff at that time were all long-time players that just wanted to give everyone the sickest matchups, so when planning we made an effort to bring in the most viral players that were making waves around the world but couldn't travel to NA events. We wanted to give the best fanservice dream matchups, and at that time Poongko had established himself as a super character specialist JP god-killer, but then pepeday also got himself on the FGC radar as an extremely good low-tier character specialist god-killer as well. So of course we wanted to see how they fared against NA's best! They didn't have an agent, they didn't have a PR person (unlike big players now), it was a different time lol. But I will say both were super graceful and thankful at the offer, and at the time it was bonkers to even see these guys face off so we were willing to spend whatever to have them come out and play. We also tried to make sure the best NA had to offer were up there as well, but it still ended up with these two giving us an incredible show. Honestly I could'nt have asked for more, from the point of view of someone planning the event, as this is exactly why we brought them over. This high-level matchup was so unseen before and so absurd to NA players, it blew everyone's mind. Of course we were hoping they'd end up in finals, and I seeded them that way (I always seeded by location. but I also made sure Pepeday had to prove himself, and holy fuck he did.. wow). But they still murdered all the NA players at the time, and ppl were so hungry just to even see them play in general because they were viral at the time and it was rare to see talented low-tier players, it was electric. If you were in the room for this event, it was insane!! The crowd was all in, and it was hype as fuck! It gave so many people present (remember, we're in canada) that street fighter big event event fan dream experience where you know you can't get this anywhere else. Us staff are all old SF heads, and seeing the young bloods present get hype for these matchups warms my old heart! This is why I started running events. It was super-intense and special and one of the best finals that year and really helped establish canada cup as an event where you could expect extra special insanity and stand out amongst the regular NA events. Definitely one of my most proudest canada cup moments.

Crazy that of all characters, Capcom decided to kill Q bomb and nerf Fuerte. Fuerte had a one season run. Pep single handedly made him look broken.
