I'm thinking INH pin would be 'inhibit', which is the opposite of enable. Love your work here.

The reason for the "disable" pin is for when you switch channels. When switching between channels, there is a small amount of time where the switch will be either floating and/or be on a different channel as it toggles between them to the channel you programmed to select. If inputing/outputting a signal as the switch changes, or when you first power on the IC, less than optimal results will occur on the receiving end.

If you have two chips for a 1-16 mux, the INH and its inverse are additional chip select switches. If you have more chips, you need more complex circuitry to enable each chip.

I have pulled these chips from scrapped VCRs. I'm using one for a high side switch for a 4 digit 7 segment display since I need to power it externally in order to drive it properly. I was going to use PNP transistors as a high side switch, but then to do that properly, I would need to in turn drive them with NPN's (hey, that one point could be a video topic for you). So it turned out the analog switch was a good solution!

Great video! Do you think it would a good enough signal quality switch for a DIY guitar effects looper?

I believe INH stands for Inhibit. You'll also notice that that is just the 74 series version of the good old 4051 8-CHANNEL ANALOG MULTIPLEXER/DEMULTIPLEXER. hackaday.com/2017/05/17/a-few-of-our-favorite-chips-4051-analog-mux/

Say I want to put a voltage of 5V on Y6 and 2.5V on all other outputs. Is this where the GNDs that we haven't touched come in?

Nice video, as ever. 👌🏻However, two things I want to state: 1st: These are not only analog switches, but multiplexer/demultiplexer. In case you wanted to show switches you may had to take CD4066 or CD4016 into account. They are dedicated switches without the „addressing“ part. 2nd: Please don‘t encourage people to fry their chips. The 4051 are NOT real physical switches, they can only manage a VERY low (switch) current. It’s really a pitty: The datasheets vary between 10 and 25mA of current to be switched, which is NOTHING compared to a simple thin wire or any relay or modern power MOSFET. I haven’t tested it, but they are not supposed to be a load current wonder, but to distribute/switch signal waveforms or digital H/L signals.

This chip is eight switches where all have one end tied together. 4066 has four switches where they're not tied together. It's the same thing with a different configuration. The datasheet even has a diagram of it being used as a multiplexer. Same for the 4016. You're splitting hairs here. And I explicitly mentioned you can find different chips with different ON resistances. If you thought I was encouraging people to fry their chips, you lack listening comprehension. For completeness's sake I mentioned the configuration that would short across the chip, mentioned that I didn't know what would happen and that it would make no sense to do, and if you really wanted to know, you'd have to try it yourself because I wasn't going to bother testing. I'm nobody's mother and nobody's caretaker, and if they're going to do something dumb, they're free to.

Yep, that's pretty much the same thing except it's 4:1 instead of 8:1.

isn't that the same as the CD4051, accept for 5 volt supply?

The 74 and CD families are largely siblings, the CD being the "low power upgrade" replacement once CMOS technology was invented and popularized. So it's 74 v. CD but both are 4051.

@@simplyput2796 isn't the CD series older than 74 series? ... since my shop where i buy my stuff is ruling them out as they get sold. while the 74HC series remain, not sure. the downside is if you work with +12 & -12v you want the CD series, lol

@@AnalogDude_ Not necessarily. Phasing out of products has to do with sales / relevance = is the money coming in worth more than the cost of new product subtracted from projected profit if so the old product remains in production

what's a good chip for switching analog video signals like composite video?

For high quality audio and video switching, I recommend the ADG5434 from Analog Devices. The dual supply allows for uni-polar or bi-polar signal switching. The key is to find a switch with low resistance, bandwidth, and low distortion. This will fill your needs.
