Here is the most requested drum play through I get, and one of my favourite tracks to play.
A lot of the requests for this track came through asking for the drum solo we used to put in the middle of the song at live shows, and who am I to turn down the challenge?!
This moment was always improvised, different every night we played it, as it also was here during recording for this video. This was my favourite take,. and believe me there were a fair few to choose from - a solo is usually a mean feat for most players I know, psychologically more than anything, but I didn't anticipate the pressure that red 'record' button added to the challenge.
The main thing I think when performing solos (or that now happens subconsciously) is to build a story as best as possible throughout. It has to grow and build, to have somewhere to go, and (for me) be relevant to the track, hence holding the pulse and the tempo throughout. Dean would always keep the constant 8th note guitar chug throughout, as it is in the breakdown on the album version, so I used that as the springboard and the path to to follow this through to its end.
I hope you enjoy!
