Your videos have helped me actually develop a guard. It's the way you explain a position, and not some rote technique that's not attached to anything else.

Joe Hill Thanks so much! I’m happy the way I organize things and teach has been beneficial to a lot of people. Hope all is well

Great point about the concept of mastery in this context. I've always felt like the pedagogy behind bjj is not optimal for learning - you show up to class and you're essentially shown individual moves together and expected to make sense of it all without being given a holistic framework or system to orient you. Some people may learn best in this way, especially if you have time to dedicate to sparring and putting things to the test, but for us older professionals with competing priorities have to train smarter, and that's where frameworks are helpful.

Eddie the Foot absolutely the most important thing is how you learn and train smart. A technique helps one problem good training habits will massively speed up your learning process as a whole

Thanks again! This is exactly what I need to learn. Pass pass pass

amazing content as usual, i am always telling folks to follow this channel if they want to have a reference point for any relevant material they will encounter in high level gi IBJJF tournaments. The de la riva grip variations on the near foot from bottom (opponent) has so many little nuances and you don't have much content out there to deal with it. Meanwhile Jon has encountered all of this. thanks again for making us all better!

Hi Jon really enjoying your videos . One of the aspects of my game I really struggle with is finalizing a pass ,getting pass a stiff arm . I.e at times I am past the legs getting to North south but a stiff arm/frame from a larger opponent keeps me from finalising . I'm a 130lbs purple belt ,😁,any chance of a video ?
@JonThomasBJJ5 жыл бұрын
cameroon95 yeah it depends on how they are stiff arming is it more with your sleeve or like on your collar? Often I switch my hip and try to flatten them more with a kesagatamr style control

oh, this guy was 2nd in lightweight in Lisbon this week,gj! Any thoughts on DEEP hook DLR(full DLR) and second leg inside under knee?
@danielbufton74716 жыл бұрын
He calls it DLR-X. Seems to be a part of his game.

How about De La Riva X passes?
@JonThomasBJJ5 жыл бұрын
Paul Rickett yeah I need to get on that one I’m not perfect at it yet so I need to dig into it more before making a video on it. But it will be out as soon as I get more in-depth on it
@reinhardtgallowitz53442 жыл бұрын
What's your preference for dealing with the collar grip when passing DLR? In terms of framework, do you prioritize the grip break at the collar prior to dealing the their leg positioning, or vice versa? How do you make that decision?

hi jon, what are your thoughts about opening up your own school, the pros and cons on that, tips and why you think you shouldn't open your own school. i been looking at many videos on what people done. I am interested in teaching but i dont think i am ready to commit to open my own school. Would starting at another establish gym be ok just to get started?
@JonThomasBJJ5 жыл бұрын
I think opening your own gym needs to be done with the right expectations. If you are into it because you love in depth strategy of high level competition Jiu Jitsu then I don’t think owning a school is necessarily the right choice, I think seminars private’s and online instruction is a better route to keep doing what you enjoy. Running a gym can be great but also you need to be more involved in the gym as a business which means things like managing multiple types of classes and people. I like both though

Wait how do you pass the foot lock one at the end? Lol
@JonThomasBJJ5 жыл бұрын
I need to do a video specifically on this topic it’s such a tricky one. I usually do more of an underhook on their ankle variation
@cameroon954 жыл бұрын
@@JonThomasBJJ Is there a video on passing the ankle lock variation? I have seen this grow quite popular and Im unsure of how to pass this
