Apparently he really liked the idea of the movie and how campy it was going to be. Just 4 info: Snakes On A Plane was bad on purpose. The idea was to create a big budget b-movie. Famously Sam Jackson only agreed to be in it if they kept the shitty title. So must of the clichees like "1 day until retirement" were done on purpose. Kind of like Sharknado but worse and way before its time. The jokes were really bad though. :)
@Spamhard
@Spamhard 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. It was a meme before it even came out. They had a ridiculous title and built a terrible b-movie around it, iirc the jackson tag line was a thing BEFORE the release of the movie. I know "its bad on purpose" doesn't excuse EVERYTHING but I feel like a lot of the criticisms in this video are falling short without the context that this was a meme film through and through. Like the reason for having snakes on a plane is meant to not really make sense, the movie is meant to be ridiculous and convoluted, the characters are meant to be two dimensional tropes etc
@TheNoonish
@TheNoonish 4 жыл бұрын
Well, their problem was that they halfway'd it. "Snakes on a Plane" was a working title for their generic trash, but they were planning to come up with an actual title at some point while trying to do this story seriously. But during production they started to realize how stupid it was and tried to play things up with the intentionally bad stuff. They had to add in Samuel L. Jackson's "I've had it" line in a reshoot because it wasn't originally in the script, but it's the sort of cliche stuff he's expected to do in a movie like this.

Yeah it's that kind of half-assed "you can't criticise us if we say it's a parody" shit. It could have been funnier if they leaned harder into self-parody, it could have been more dramatic if they didn't, but they kinda take an indecisive compromise that makes it all fairly forgettable. That said, stuff like "don't you think I exhausted every other option!?" is pretty obviously self-aware. He went straight from having the guy shot to, well, Snakes On A Plane; of course including a line that specifically paints that as a logical next step is a joke.

We went to see this opening night, because it sounded like a good time. The theatre was so full our group got split into multiple seating areas, so we were able to compare notes when the film was over. It was one of the best movie experiences I've ever had, from an audience perspective. Very quickly we all seemed to realize we were in an unintended comedy and the audience started to hiss whenever the snakes appeared on screen. Every time they bit someone, we'd cheer. By the time SLJ got to his iconic line, the majority of the audience said it alongside him - and cheered. And the best part was that to my left were a couple who clearly knew nothing about this movie going in, and the poor things spent the whole film asking 'what's going on? How do they already know what he's going to say? Why are they hissing?' quietly to one another. Great times. I never watched it again.

It would have been a lot better if the villain just smirked at being questioned about his methods and said, "Of course it's stupid, but I figured it'd be pretty fucking funny. Have some people waiting for them at their projected landing spot in case it doesn't work." Then the movie ends with the survivors being shot and killed by the gangsters in a grim black comedy/dawn of the dead sorta way.

I unsarcastically love this movie. I watched it in cinemas as a 13 year old and liked it, then recently wondered if I was just young and stupid so rewatched it. If anything I loved it more. All the tropes like "we gotta suck the poison out", "can anyone land the plane?", and "I was one day from retirement" were obviously done on purpose. You could argue they weren't done well, but this movie doesn't want you to take it seriously. I do agree it would be better with the first ten minutes cut.

I've only just found your channel but have to add, as an old man on the internet, that going into this movie everyone knew exactly what it was. This was the Sharknado of our time. You know that thing about how you're supposed to be quiet in a theater? Immediately there was a full audience understanding to wholly ignore that rule and yell, laugh, lambast, etc the movie as it happened. And this was opening night, midnight showing. A magical experience that I will always cherish.

I enjoyed the film review, Jay, but I think you'd be highly amused to look into the story of the meme surrounding the movie before it came out. The studio made several changes to the film as a direct response to people responding to the absurdity of the premise on the internet. They even went back and added the famous Agent Jackson line in.

You know, the antivenom collection subplot could have been much more interesting if they had decided to phone up every major hospital if they have antivenom and a medical professional or two to spare. And then it's half an hour till the plane lands, but they're still missing antivenom for three snakes, so they have to go on the internet to find enthusiasts who have those snakes and _answer their phone in the middle of the night._

If you were too young at the time to have known, let me tell you that this film was deliberately designed to be lame. It actually was "The Meme Movie", and when it got memed on the Internet is when its budget soared from 3 million to 36 million. Sam actually stepped in to prevent the producers giving the film a good name because the "Snakes on a Plane" meme was too good. Not that I'm dissing "Falling For You". I still think that film needs to be made. Someone hit up Chris Hemsworth and Danny deVito and remind them.

Yeah, it felt like low hanging fruit here. It seemed obvious they were going for Sharknado style but got a budget somehow. Before Sharknado obviously but I just mean a "so bad it's good" type. They knew what they were doing. The snake button alone screams do not take this seriously. I kinda think it started out serious and then they just embraced the stupidity of it halfway through filming.
