*********** Summary **************
If you look at baiting a traditional crabbing trotline in 3 steps (1 - remove/attach bait bag, 2 - empty/fill bait bag, 3 - store/retrieve line for next bag) then Snap Baits do save time.
Step 1 is eliminated by using Snap baits.
Step 2 is not greatly affected. When the Snap Baits work as designed there is a "slight" time save. But when they don't work you lose some time. It's about a wash.
Step 3 is not affected at all. Storing and retrieving line is the same with Snap Baits vs a traditional setup.
In my view there is about a 33% time savings using Snap Bait as long as they hold up. Your time savings is based on the your own efficiency and the way you bait your lines.
While I experienced a major problem with the clips I received, Snap bait stood by their product and made the situation right very quickly. With that I cannot recommend anyone buying the cheaper Snap Bait options (spring steel or nickel plated) unless they have made changes in the manufacturing process. Stainless steel is the only real option and its expensive.
Overall Snap Baits are a very costly proposition for most folks. For that investment to be worth-while they need to last for several seasons at a minimum. The jury is still out for me personally but I will have a better idea at the end of the 2020 season.
