With regards to the Can High and the Can Low the voltage on both of these lines are positive the high being slightly higher than the low. When data transfer takes place the high pulses higher again and the low pulses lower again this produces a mirror image of each other in opposite directions. This is the VAG protocol.

This training has been a Godsend for me in learning to diagnose bus faults. I do have a question that wasn't addressed. What would cause an INVERTED/reversed CAN bus signal?? i.e., the resting voltages are 1.5 and 3.5v, and the drop to 2.5 when transmitting? Just saw this on an intermittent no crank vehicle. No com with any high speed modules (low speeds were good). After disconnecting and reconnecting battery signals returned to normal and com restored. No issues since. Sounds like a glitching or corrupted gateway module that needed its memory reset, but I'm no expert. Would love yours or anyone else's thoughts!
@Ken-1
@Ken-1 Жыл бұрын
I'll also add battery voltage was low when I first tapped into the signals (parasitic drain). Hooking up cables and a jump box did not correct it right away. It was only after disconnecting (to do other tests) and then reconnecting that things cleared up and it cranked.

Soo, I just watched another video which used *strictly* a VOM to test the CAN Bus. I commented on the video and also provided the link to this video because I realized that using a VOM is not always 100% accurate of what might be taking place on the network. Now I have a question after viewing both videos. In this presentation, you mentioned a *PERIOD* at the end of an information package / sentence. Can this *higher voltage* be picked up on a VOM and could that lead to misinterpretation / confusion of what is happening on the network - *IF* someone is not familiar with this end-of-message signal / voltage? I'm currently a Marine Electrician and ex Nuclear Instrumentation Technician due to transfer into the auto electrical diagnostic field later next month because I have become *fascinated* with auto electrical diagnostics - at age 65...66 next month. If only I realized how complex and interested this field was I would have branched over a long time age but, better late than never coz I'm still in tip top shape. lol I'm currently learning as much as I possibly can before embarking on my new profession at a luxury auto manufacturing plant here in the US, so I'm really fired uP. *E / mc2 = m*

On the j1850 single wire bus, if one of the modules on the splice pack shorts, does it take out pin 2 of the DLC also? My IPC drops out and I lose the code reader also

Snap on doesn't make anything. They have it made out their label. Besides that do you have a scanner? Start with a basic one around 100.00 that reads code and has Live data feed. Start studying OBD2 and it's 10 modes. Get along in that, and you will know later when you need a better scanner. The next level would be One with Data mapping and Oscilloscope.

@christopher - The first part of this comment is false. Snap-on designs and builds our own scan tools in San Jose, California. Have been for over 30 years. I do agree with learning the basics first.
@SnaponDiagnostics
@SnaponDiagnostics 2 жыл бұрын
@Mike - as far as vehicle overage and functions, all of our scan tools offer the same coverage. The "entry-level" tool would be the SOLUS. Anything above that adds additional features like Fast-Track Intelligent Diagnostics, scope capabilities, or a Windows operating system.

Ideally even a CAN BUS Simplified diagram should show the CANH and CANL running together as a twisted pair (your presentation has a huge loop area, which is wrong), daisy chained from module to module without any stubs (which is how CAN was specified, and why termination is ideally 60 Ohms characteristic impedance). The reason you see stubs in cars is because the OEMs do not want to pay for a CAN bus in and a CAN bus out connections at the module connector. So, the OEM introduces an unwanted stub to save money by reducing the connector pins required by using CAN signal splices in the wiring harness with a corresponding loss of signal fidelity. Conceivable you could crimp two wires, if small enough, into one pin. However, the connector wire seals don't work very well when sealing two wires together.
