When I started having doubts about my $21,000 Epiq toolbox and hutch, I saw an ICON tool box. This led me to sell my SO toolbox and replace it with a larger ICON also adding a locker, I put the other $9,000 back in the bank. My ICON torque wrench arrived yesterday and I'll be selling my SO version soon. Like I've done with most of my SO tools. Feel like a battered wife who finally called the police. lol

Nice! it’s definitely a quality torque wrench for the money. Yep Snap On tools are nice but way overpriced in my book. I don’t care what anyone says, you don’t need tool truck tools to be a pro. Do I like buying tools not made in USA, no but I also like not having debt.

I just found this channel and I can tell I'm going to be a BIG fan. Trying to find tool channels that tests metrics objectively is way harder than it should be. The torque test channel is the only other one that springs to mind off the top of my head (AvE to some extent). Keep up the good work.

Yeah that’s what I have noticed on here. Most people want to see data, not someone reviewing a tool and saying it’s better. I’m not biased, I’m giving the facts. Like you said there is very few comparison channels that test good (Torque Test Channel) and I agree AvE. Project Farm has comparisons but things like testing a drills run time by seeing how long it can turn and single cylinder engine over I can’t really see accurate… Thanks for the support!

I've had a Snap On Tech Angle (3/8") for ~20 years. I use it on everything under 100lb/ft, including lug nuts, so it gets used a lot! It was still within 0.5 lb/ft through the range (up to 100lb/ft) when I last had it last tested, a couple years ago. I've had it tested 3x, it has always been the same, never adjusted, and it still works! Tech Angle is the grey body Tech Wrench. It measures tightening angle after reaching the desired torque. So, say your head bolts are "70lb/ft + 115°", after reaching 70lb/ft it measures the angle the bolt is moved, and it doesn't matter if space is limited. It's got some kinda pixies to measure the angle tightened, regardless of attitude or ratcheting. Real nice for head bolts that are hidden under the wiper cowl!

@@Tools-Tested The ones you have mentioned will be the professional end, you can also add in Norbar to that as well. We also have Halfords, Sealey and Clarke, who would be typical garage equipment brands and then you get Laser and Draper that are more aimed at home garages. Thanks for the great videos! I want to buy the Icon SPLIT BEAM right now, but might have to wait for the 10-150ftlbs to come out. I'm wondering about torque wrenches' usable accuracy and I think other people are too. Most of them claim to have an accuracy of +/-4% of 20-100% of SCALE. Never heard of 20-100% of MAX. So 40-250 is 210? 20% of 210 is 42? 42+40 being the lowest value on the wrench means the accuracy is between 82-250ftlbs? Mostly do brakes and suspension work, haven't built an engine since the 80s. So is it 20-100% of max or scale? Don't mean to sound dumb, just uninformed. Subscribed! Thanks.

No problem! The 250 ft lbs Icon split beam tested very well in my other video. I to hope the come out with a lower torque range split beam. So the way I interpret the 20-100% of max scale is, 250*.20=50. The torque wrench is then supposed to be +-4% within the scale of 50-250. Hopefully that makes sense. Im sure there has to be someone else on here that can weigh in on this.

@Tools-Tested
@Tools-Tested 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, both work the same in regards to how the angle resets. Once torque is removed you have 10 seconds before it zeros out, enough time to ratchet back. If you reapply force the angle keeps counting up. If you meet the desired angle it will start from zero once you apply force again.

@Tools-Tested

Really depends on how much you plan on using it and what for. I know the icon is a lot more money but you also get Leds on the side, flex head and higher accuracy. But personally if your not doing anything with torque angle/left hand thread I would buy the Icon split beam.

I would definitely consider a split beam then or the icon digital. Quinn would be more difficult to use in that case imo seeing you won’t be able to see the display and there are no leds on the side.

The problem with the Mac and Snap On users is they aren’t honest at how those brands are not the same quality they were 20 years ago. I have a full set of Snap On sockets and wrenches I bought 22 years ago, and ended up needing and buying some new Snap On sockets for a project last year and they simply aren’t the same quality as my older stuff. I don’t know why that is…steel quality, manufacturing tooling…I’m not an expert on why it’s different but it is. That quality decline has allowed brands like Icon to come in and chisel out a market that is almost as good, or better than the truck tools.

I bought 3 Snap On TechAngle torque wrenches and they all have problems. I got 1/4", 3/8" and a 1/2" and they have a similar problem that makes it totally unusable. When you need it while on a job, that is when they gave up, leaving you in a bind. The problem were the battery chambers. For some reasons, due to poor design, the connection will cut off and the result is that it becomes totally unusable. On KZbin there were a few videos addressing this problem and how to fix it. Believe me, I tried and unless you are an electronics repairman who is handy with a soldering iron, don't even attempt it. How in the world a torque wrench costing a bundle could have such design flaw ? It is not rocket science to design a battery chamber that works. What a shame, touting USA build and leaving a short end to their users. No more Snap On for me......period.

I wanted to see the lower range tested. These go down to 12-foot pounds. I rather use one torque wrench for much as possible. The idea is a digital should be able to go down to lower ranges. The Honda's and other imports mostly 6MM, 8MM, 10MM bolts the torque ranges are from 18-36 lbs. It's all aluminum so have to be careful not to over torque easy to do.

The warranty between these two screams out loud everything! Snap On doesn't even trust that this $900 tool will last 2+ year's. I would never pay that kinda money just for the name and not even get a good warranty a long with it. Snap On is so damn stuck up and snooty it's ridiculous. I can do the same or better with Husky tool's. LoL. Thank's to you I'll be buying the Icon Torque Wrench this week for a big engine project.

Metrologist with 9 years of experience here, you're not supposed to test torque wrenches in that manner. They're always supposed to be pulled upwards, and it's the only way we certify them. We do calibrations for DOD, DOE, aerospace, construction, ect. Icon may work for 1000 cycles, but it won't last for years on end. Lots of brands last a while, but ~snap-on and Proto are the only ones we're able to reliably get parts for and be able to adjust. If you're a diy grease monkey, sure, icon will work, but to be honest, they still aren't the best.
