10:45 While I don't work in the triple A industry, I am getting my degree in the field currently and I've been designing games since high school. While using colored paint textures to denote a point of interest for puzzles, progression, etc. can be a bit of a crude solution, it's meant to be functional over immersive. I'm sure every dev would love to have a unique, lore-friendly way to get players where they need to be. I don't want to make excuses on behalf of design leads, this is the easy solution and everyone knows it, but in terms of development time it can be very costly in a high budget setting with rigid deadlines to "break the mold" per se. It can definitely feel like a boring or cheap solution to rely on something as egregious as bright colored paint, but the fact that it's noticeable is not a mistake; this is the core of why it's used. A significantly worse problem would be if there were no designed indicators telling players what to do, but it's dependent on the game whether this sort of obvious tell is in tension with the core experience or not. tl;dr, Penny is correct and based

Yellow paint discourse is especially silly when in the context of FF7re because there’s literally an indicator on the ground for every single gap/jump and ladder but no one is complaining about it.

I do agree that there should be a balance between obvious and subtle hints when it comes to games. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Forbidden Siren (from the original team behind Silent Hill) on the PS2 was heavily criticized for being way too vague with its puzzles, to the point of players having to backtrack through previous chapters just to get the plot going again.

Maaan When Cloud told Wedge to stay put and then looked up the pillar? I was genuinely expecting him to do that superhuman leap from the end of the first Reactor job and get straight up past a couple floors of the pillars. Just full on SOLDIER power display Sadly the FF7RE seems to have nerfed both Zack & Cloud compared to their achievements in previous expanded materials

I think GOW Norse saga and HFW has some of the best approaches to the “yellow paint” debacle. They tried to blend it into the environment and provided some lore to it (GOW in the regard). I prefer if the “yellow pain” or equivalent blends into the world tbh. If devs are going with the more direct approach (just yellow paint) then it might be better to give players the ability to toggle it on or off
