We’re overdue for a serious nerd-out session here and so we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to address and demonstrate the snare drum sound being captured by microphones from different perspectives. What does it sound like when the mic is on the snare side but blended with overhead? What about miking the side of the drum? Grab a set of good headphones and buckle up for a fun adventure into sonic perspectives.

It took me like 20 years of being a crummy home recording drummer to realize the snare sound comes from all the mics combined and not just a 57 on top of the snare, lol

Lol for real. I kept isolating the snare mic and I’m like, “what does it neeeed??”

That's where I'm at right now. The overheads are giving a beautiful sound. The close mic sounds horrendous

This Craviotto drum sounds amazing. That snare crispiness is great.

That drum shell mic placement is something I have never heard of before. also good note on the blend of the close mics and overheads. Super cool!

Fantastic episode! Perfect timing too because I'm about to start recording. While experimenting with muc positions I discovered micing the shell to get a fantastic sound. I ended up using a ribbon mic in the "wurst" position, so it's right above the bass drum and 6" from the snare shell and the sound that mic gets makes me happy

Wow! I really like the microphone for the shell of the drum. Really cool! Excellent video, and lots of food for thought.

I love Cody's chill approach to playing simple grooves, I think you could totally sub for the stones.

interesting video! gonna try that shell side mic placement & overheads. i'm gonna lose the warmth of the batter side but at least i get a bit of both from the side - then try to work it out in the DAW.

In my experience a mic close to the batter head has a tighter, dry type of sound. As you move farther away the sound opens up quite a bit. Also, a bottom mic does wonders for rounding out the overall sound. You don't really need high end expensive mics either. I use an Audix I5 on the top and the old reliable Shure SM 57 on the bottom. Lastly, if you actually mix your own drums in a DAW, the magic elixer to make the snare really cut through the mix without raising the volume is parallel compression. Great vids as usual.

Almost the same thoughts.... I put a SM-57 on top and an Audix i5 on the bottom!😊

Cody, you should go seek out interviews from producer Steve Albini about his work on Nirvana's 'In Utero' album here on KZbin. They experimented with all kinds of micing, but especially with Dave Grohl's snare drum. It's incredible how many mics were used around Dave's snare just to get that unique sound you hear on the record. Sometimes it's good to use three mics around the snare, plus mics aimed at the walls where the sound is echoing off of, to get the overall ambience of the drum. It definitely adds to the sonic quality of the album.

Also the angle of the close mic to the drum makes a lot of difference. It's really worth experimenting with that stuff.

Back in the early 2000's when oversize vents on the snares were all the rage, I remember seeing someone put a mic inside the vent. I was never really sure what affect it had, but if I'd be curious to try it out.

I would use the shell side with a cob or any metal / high tuned / ringy snare in genres like soul, funk, ska or reggae and specially if there's no many channels available. Anyway, I loved the video, your stuff is really amazing. Thanks!

There's an episode here on KZbin on Reverbs page about Kevin Parkers mic placement where he uses a shell side mic and a batter mic. It's certainly worth a watch

I had a Bubinga Tama Starphonic that LOVED being miced from the shell side. Only drum I've ever had that behaved that way, but it sounded great.

Did you mic it at a port or just the shell? That’s the one thing we didn’t do here- align the port with the mic.
@jjdrumworks
@jjdrumworks 2 жыл бұрын
@@SoundsLikeADrum I tried both but didn't notice much of a difference. It was an sm57, so if the sound did change, the mic probably wasn't true enough to detect it. Also, if you're familiar with the starphonics at all, they have a very thin shell, and low mass hoops. Probably the reason it responded so well to this type of mic placement. I imagine the shell was really coming alive compared to most other, burlier snares.

I have no personal experiences in this. However, a friend of mine has been a sound guy for over forty years. He swears by mic-ing snare drums with two mics: top and bottom. He liked an SM81 for the top head for the response and the on-board rolloff control. He didn't care too much what he put on the bottom head; he said he just needed enough snare sound to balance out batter head ring (WOW! did he hate ringing snare drums!), and that almost any mic was good enough to capture the sound of the snare wires. He usually used an SM57. He tried to position his overheads to get as much cymbal and as little bleed from the drums.

I've had to mic the shell of snares in live situations where I was doing sound and the drummer's kit was so tight I couldn't get a mic on the batter. I've always been surprised at how good a sound I got.

This whole channel is gonna be turned on its head when you try to fit those drums in a mix with other instruments lol especially cause the snare is always tuned too high
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 2 жыл бұрын
We disagree. Everything we talk about on this channel relates back to decision making based on the context. Take that into account and you'll never run into an issue that you can't solve when it comes to how drum sounds fit with other instruments. We've used this on our own sessions, for major product shoots, and on grammy nominated records. It works.

Piccolo snares we’re used in majority 90s rock music. High tuned snares cut through the mix well. Not the best choice for every song or every genre but sometime a high tuned snare is exactly what you need.
@austinshoupe3003
@austinshoupe3003 2 жыл бұрын
It just sounds too high because they do the right thing and leave a little ring in the sound. When you add the other instruments, you'll get more focus on the fundamental and the ring will just fade into the mix. You've heard this sound way more than you realize.
