The great Brenda Russell originally wrote and sang It's Somethin' in 1983. Lalah's cover was in 1990 and was one of the singles taken from her first album. I was lucky enough to watch Lalah live at Ronnie Scott's jazz club in London a few years back - she is one of the most incredible singers and performers on the planet.

She was 13 when she first split her vocal chords. Recently, her doctor x-rayed her chords while she hit the note. Her chords function individually. She can sing 4 chords at once. Yes, Lay-la. You said it correctly the first attempt.

Dude, you was lookin crazy! Lalah is amazing, & incredible reharmonized arrangement by Snarky Puppy. If you hear her original version, you may even appreciate even more what they did with that. Lalah is daughter of the late great Donny Hathaway (A Song For You; One Day We’ll All Be Free; duets with Roberta Flack: Where is the Love; The Closer I get To You; Back Together Again.). I believe the technique Lalah used in that crazy part of the scat is multi-phonics, singing 2 tones at once.

This is not overtone singing. Lalah's vocal chords do something extremely rare--she talks about it in a video I wish I could find the URL for, but when she does it, one chord vibrates while the other doesn't and nobody can explain why or how she's able to control it. They actually filmed it to find out what the deal was but no one knows how or why it happened.
