Oh, I did it because the world made me. mom hated me, dad drank, people are multiracial, it made me do it. I came away from a bad situation no more than three years ago. That disorientating sense of self awareness was something that I had to use often in order to protect myself. I didn’t realize until I moved away that I had focused so much time into being what other people wanted me to be that I had no real idea as to who I was or why I was doing anything anymore. I fell into a really dark place for a few years after that, sometimes I read things that should sound completely normal as being threatening or an attack. Things are getting better lately and i’ve gained some new perspective as well as insight. I just know that I cannot associate now with who I was three years ago because that person was a terrible person who only lived to hurt people because people hurt them. That person is dead now, and although I understand that person, that is not and will not ever be who I am now. I can tell when people are in pain, I can tell when people are going through the intense isolation and bullying that I went through and I understand all of it, and unlike who I was back then, I will not stand around and act like I don’t see any of it. I don’t want anyone to have to go through what I did internally and externally, so I’ve made a promise to myself that instead of ignoring other people’s pain like so many others had done to me back then I want to be that person who doesn’t take advantage of venerability. I want to be the one good friend who doesn’t lie, or gossip, or steal, or make you feel like you’re nothing. And if in turn that means that I gain a good friend as well then that’s all i’ll ever need. I think that’s all anyone ever needs, someone to fall back on when you can’t rely on yourself.

My dad used to be a corrections officer in Sullivan County Correctional Facility, where David Berkowitz was being held, and he used to watch over the inmates. He's told me, and some other corrections officers, that Berkowitz was what they described as the "perfect inmate." David was a very kind person, he never disrespected any of the officers, he never stepped out of line, he never broke any rules. My dad has had many conversations with him and tells me that he was actually a pretty funny guy.
