No it’s not. It’s not Apples’ fault that you don’t have the practice / patience / skill / competence to use the same tools that they and Authorised Apple Service Centres use. Why should Apple expend time and money developing, new, specialised tools for amateurs to use? If you can’t use the professional, genuine tools to repair your device, you shouldn’t be repairing devices.

@TheSkcube

@@mikeward1701 It's not about the skill to use Apple's tools. You can get comparable tools in the after market, this isn't something magical that Apple has bestowed upon us mortals. The problem is the requirement to ship 96 pounds of kit if you want to do it the way apple tells you to do it. Shipping stuff around is not environmentally friendly and that's the whole point of fixing stuff. Not everyone lives near an Apple store or AASP. As far as I know, guitar picks, hot gun/heat beds/hair dryers, suction cups and spudgers have already been invented, so Apple doesn't have to design anything new. They just need to make a manual, so that a repair can be done with simpler tools. I think one of the world's most valuable companies', can spare the time to do so.

I enjoyed watching you go through the whole process, Quinn! This whole process seems ridiculously cumbersome, especially for individuals fixing their own phones. That process of serializing the new parts with the phone at the end is just weird. That phone call could easily be an online form or something similar that the user could fill out on their own. The fact that it needs to be a LIVE person on the other end…Apple clearly wants to exact as much control over this whole process as possible, even though you paid for the equipment and parts, and you know for certain that the parts are genuine.

Clearly they don't really intend for anyone to use this service. I'm going out on a limb and assume that they're going to argue that no one uses this service is a reason why right to repair is bad in general. Nonetheless I think it's pretty cool that they make these tools available for renting and even purchasing. Some of it looks like a pretty good investment for repair shops or maker spaces. As an end user I wouldn't think of using this, not just because the price difference is not enough for taking on the risk, but also because shipping 100 pounds of equipment across the country is a disaster from an environmental standpoint.

I work on an Apple Authorized Service Provider in Mexico and we use the exact same tools, and they charge us for every single one without asking. We have to have them all to be able to offer repairs for any single device model. And normally they change for every model. They have made them more modular in the last years, like the trays and the press, but normally we have a lot of those laying around with no use. When I saw the self repair kit I though it was a joke. It's really overkill for a normal user to use all of this and learn all this technical stuff just for a battery swap. As you said, they do it because they have to, but it seem like they make it harder and more expensive so you would prefer to take it to the store.

I'm really of two minds on this. On the one hand I do feel like this is Apple trying to sandbag the process. However, I also understand Apple's desire that a first party repair should be as perfect as possible. And a large part of that is taking the user variability out of it. For example, I think that the battery press is just as justified as a torque screwdriver. If you know how much force needs to be applied to fully activate the adhesive, how do you communicate that to a user? Not only that, but, how do you ensure that every user applies the adequate force without applying too much. That press is a key part of something called process reliability.

I fixed iPhones, iPads, macbooks/iMacs/Mac Minis etc. for a few years. The process is way simpler than Apple makes it with these tools. You can easily get an iPhone screen off with a hardware store heat-gun in about 5 minutes, not the 10+ it appeared to take you here. The molds clearly make things more difficult as well; if you ditched them you can manipulate the phone a whole lot easier. The part with the roller going over the battery to adhere it to the adhesive was hilariously over complicated -- classic Apple. As Aarav Chawla put it, Apple is clearly trying to demotivate the general public from trying to fix it themselves. This is clearly is not anything close to right-to-repair, and anyone suggesting it is is basically slapping 3rd party repair stores in the face.

Like I would hope that they would have a downloadable app behind the repair-order wall where you can just boot your iPhone, connect it to your Mac or PC with a USB to Lightning cable and then just have it run all the required "diagnostics" and pairing locally. Automatically too like a one-tap process. They can use your S/N for verification or multiple uses or whatever. No, they have all the software they need to do the repair in one hour, while this probably takes 3+ days, costs about the same amount as going to the Apple Store AND makes you as the customer assume all the risk (which given the price makes the whole process not worth it). Right to repair is all about making the process easier, not about giving the tools to customers. If a 3rd party shop has to go through this verification every time they want to use a genuine screen and battery, then they are looking at the same 2-3 day turnaround time in addition to the repair itself. @@37racso its not that complicated. I don’t see how you wouldn’t be 100% responsible for the risks in repairing your phone. They made the tools and parts available. The verification process can be made easier but its not any different from lets say repairing a car. You replace an ecu, instrument cluster, bcm, radio, camera, rcdlr, airbag control module, etc… in a car it needs to be programmed to work properly or work at all and you have to pay for the software or go to the dealership or somewhere that has the software to program whatever module you replaced. There are things that need to be programmed for them to work properly. They gave you the tools, the parts, and all you have to do is call to complete the verification process. I’d imagine if they made software available it would cost more than the phone itself just like the cost of the software for cars and those are specific to each car brand. Not everything can be plug and play which is what alot of people hope for but it will never happen.

Go figure... Apple did malicious compliance with the RTR movement in the most Apple way possible. This is what happens when you expect companies to do the right thing instead of forcing them to. If something negatively impacts their bottom line, they will NEVER do it willingly.

Yeah. Apple does things their way. What I thought about this program when I first seen it and heard the details was that NOBODY REPAIRS THEIR PHONE AT HOME BY THEMSELVES. I am a tech guy who builds computes and I don't repair my own phones when I break them. People want to go to 3rd party repair shops and get them repaired, but Apple has hand over fist fought 3rd party repair shops to keep that income flowing towards Apple. They sue anyone who wants to purchase parts themselves from the factory, they have contracts to not allow anyone to buy their components from the factory, and they partnered with Amazon to remove all 3rd party refurbishing companies off Amazon, so you have no choice but to buy from Apple even refurbished. And now this program is just them trying to disarm 3rd party repair shops by having an alibi when they get brought before congress and various consumer protection agencies. NOBODY REPAIRS AT HOME, THEY AREN"T AFRAID OF LOSING MONEY TO PEOPLE REPAIRING AT HOME, THEY ARE AFRAID OF LOSING MONEY TO 3RD PARTY REPAIR SHOPS. FUCK APPLE.

The thing that frustrates me about this is that it's pretty clear, at least in my opinion, that this is an attempt to "prove" to the public that phone repairs are highly technical jobs that require expensive and precise tools. The reality is, those cases are overkill for the relatively small level of precision required for their functions, they're off the shelf machines that you can buy from Alibaba, and the strategies that the likes of ifixit use are substantially more practical, for money and time saving, for consumers and small repair shops. I don't think this program is supposed to be successful. I think this is to prove to the government that they're willing to give us the chance, and to prove to the consumer that their repairs are hard. After that, I think we'll return to status quo and they'll make an example out of it.

7:17 Haven’t seen the whole video yet but when you locked it into the screen removal machine, it was so tight because the camera was supposed to be at the bottom and the buttons had a minor indent in the heating contacts, hence why you heard the buttons press when you locked it in. It isn’t that tight normally.

Part of the reason the repair is more difficult is due to the change of PSA used (the adhesive) and the way the display sits more flush to the enclosure. I’m sure there are other ways to open the phone but they are going to be harder, but once the phone is open you’ll notice it’s easier to repair. Less screws involved to get the cowlings off and the battery is still the same as far as having the tabs to remove it. Worst case you can take out the bottom speaker and Taptic Engine to get to the tabs easier. And yeah the TrueDepth (top camera) should be treated with care . Apple just allowed those cameras to be repaired in stores but DIY isn’t an option yet. As far as configuration goes… I really wish they didn’t outsource the diagnostics to a 3rd party company. That process can go way smoother with people that know what the diagnostics and system configuration is doing opposed to people just reading from a script. But this lets me know that Apple is keeping a close eye on the part authentication process and not letting the coding out into the public. Overall I think it’s an interesting option, but your not saving any time or money, unless your not close to an Apple Store, or already have a repair setup and just need to flesh out your tools and repair process. I have to do these kind of repairs every day in less then an hour per phone and when I heard this was coming to the public all I could say was good luck lol. Also I can hear the cries of all the people that damage there display trying to just replace the battery from here 😂

I work as someone who repairs apple phones for a 2nd hand company and the massive tools you are given can just be done with something that is big enough to fit in to ones small bag or purse. And i was wondering how the non original battery and non original screen issue would be solved. This is, like you said, weird. This again feels like a complete anti consumer issue that apple is known for. If you don`t know how to remove a battery, it is relatively easy for you to puncture it and just burn the phone up, not to mention the whole house if you are not careful enough. The little screen adhesive press, while handy, not needed. Honestly, the only thing useful from the look of things is that you can call apple and let them remotely remove the NOB and NOS issue.

Glue is more secure. Things can still flex and move around with just screws. Not so much an issue on rigid components, but batteries are a little squishy. Even tiny movement inside the case can cause them to wear out on tiny spots that can make them rupture.
