An outstanding piece of architecture from the turn of the century. We forget to thank the Duke family for lovingly caring for the property. The restoration of needed areas, outside, inside and roof area to bring it back to it's original grandeur. It is a magnificent piece of history!

...at 1.17 you can see over Central Park to the Dakota building on the west side where John Lennon lived and Yoko still still has 4 apartments in that building. Years ago the East side was considered the place for "old money" whilst the west side was considered for the "Nouveaux riche"...now just as expensive as any place in the world.

Agree that priority number for Slim is not helping others...How can anyone posting here have "tremendous respect" for someone who is corrupt, and manipulating the New York Times' editorial position on the elections, who clearly is in a dirty bed with Jeb Bush making money for Jeb selling Obama phones for hard earned taxpayer dollars. Even socialist Trump-hating Bloomberg cites the Obamaphone as graft and waste. Carlos Slim and Jeb Bush heir to the crime family, are two birds of a feather. www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2013-04-25/richest-man-slim-cited-for-profiting-from-phones-for-poor

How much do utilities (gas, electricity, water, etc.) cost in these beautiful mansions. I know if you can afford a mansion like this, you can afford the upkeep. It amazes me why people want homes this size. I do like the fact that they installed elevators so they wouldn't have to walk up and down the stairs. The older you get, the harder the steps. I understand the argument that the ability to get rich is an incentive for innovation but i find it pretty hard to justify having a net worth of 53 billion while the NATION of Haiti asked for 3 billion in aid after one of the worst national disasters in recent history.... That is LITERALLY pocket change for that guy in the sense that even if he gave 30 billion dollars he could pretty much still do WHATEVER THE HELL HE WANTED WHENEVER THE HELL HE WANTED AT THE SNAP OF A FINGER.... why do we try to pretend that we cant have rich people while not being that fuking ridiculous...?

Why should anyone else be entitled to his money? Why didnt you give your life's savings to haiti? The reason is because its your money and youve earned it simple as that. No one can tell you how to spend your hard earned money and no one can tell carlos slim how to spend his.

Find out how he earned his money. He really did work VERY hard for it and he played the game right. And it IS a "game." It's HIS money, not ANYONE else's, and he should be free to do as he sees fit. And you don't know what he does or doesn't do in terms of philanthropy and charity. This isn't somebody who fell into wealth accidentally. He was in the trenches - he started out as a taxi-cab driver and he became a billionaire USING HIS EARNINGS FROM THAT, and he did it all LEGITIMATELY and LEGALLY. In my opinion that's ADMIRABLE. :)

For those saying that "the cost wasn't worth it" - - trust me, you have NO idea what you're talking about. When it comes to high-end real estate, this is *THE* neighborhood, there *ARE* no others. The value is *GUARANTEED* to increase by tens of millions of dollars over a relatively short-time; it's almost a SURE-FIRE profit. On top of that, the extremely wealthy like to have a place to entertain (and network); and as far as "that level" of society goes, you either have a "trophy mansion" on the upper-East side - - or you don't. And "if you're not inside, you're outside." Plus, while it's "only" 27 feet wide, the total square footage is HUGE.
Would have been nice to actually see a sneak peek of the current interiors instead of just showing us 100 year old photos. But I guess your clickbait title worked, you got me to waste two and a half minutes on this

There's actually a funny story here; he bought this place to use as a "trophy house" and "museum" to show off his ivory and hunting collection. Only after he bought it did he find out that it's not legal to import those things into this country. I have tremendous respect for him though. It's actually a wonderful story of EARNED wealth acquired the RIGHT way. He started out as a taxi driver and he did it RIGHT. It may have annoyed some people; he was "aggressive" and worked very long hours and efficiently took only customers who wanted to go a reasonable distance. Not very "nice" in some ways, but COMPLETELY legal. There were plenty of other cabs right behind him that the short-distance customers could take; they weren't inconvenienced all that much. He then saved his earnings from that, and instead of spending it "foolishly," he took a chance and set up a jewelry shop which sold expensive watches and jewels to wealthy Russians that were in a specific part of New York City that he had shrewdly taken note of. He then ESTABLISHED CONTACTS with them, NETWORKING through the jewelry store. He then got one of them to help him set up a diamond-importing business, importing diamonds from Russia - that began to make him wealthy. He then wisely used that money and another Russian contact formed through the jewelry store, to set up an oil-importing business - again importing from Russia - and then he got into Manhattan Real Estate, which made him truly wealthy. Think about it - this guy became a billionaire through working as a taxi driver!
@timothyrigney131910 жыл бұрын
Oh - consider this though - - - SURELY he (or his people) mentioned to them somewhere along the line that his intent was to use the place as a "museum" to show off his ivory. It's common knowledge in America that it's not legal to import it and yet they "accidentally on-purpose" forgot to mention it. I don't care WHO they are; that's not classy, it's classless.
