Wow, that is remarkable indeed. Been around the ocean in California all my life, but this beach is much more gradual (I do love Oregon's flat beaches). As a result, when the wave that comes it takes a seemingly long time and fools you into thinking there isn't much depth or volume. This video proves that wrong!! You are right Bill, that channel is deep, and it fills up so quickly at the 2nd wave. If it doesn't drown an older folk, it's certainly gonna get *everybody* completely drenched to the bone, swimming in their clothes, struggling to not get carried back out! Thanks for the video. I'll keep my eyes peeled for sneakers' next time I'm in Oregon. ;-)

Wow how many people died in the past being out there like that knowing that that giant sneaker wave is going to be what 3 ft 5 ft and you cannot outrun that 5 foot no way where you going to run to jump on those logs s*** the second you touch those logs you're dead oh my God great video

When you see all that debris on the beach it’s a good indication to stay back.

yes as opposed to all of the silly people walking down there and not staying back! ................................................

I don't know how anybody really knows where to build those houses or structures seeing the shoreline is so unpredictable. Yet somehow there's no problems over there.

It's crazy to see how close they are to the shore. Honestly there is no sum of money that could get me to live even close to an ocean let alone right on top of it.

"Sneaker waves" is the layman's term for _surf beat,_ relatively long-period waves (30 -120 seconds) that form along the coast distinct from the underlying swell (which usually has a period around 10 - 20 seconds). The dynamics behind surf beat is rather complex, but it tends to become very prominent when there are large swells running concurrently from two different directions.

@@pooderbill, as a physicist and life-long surfer, that wiki is a bit confused. Open ocean rogue waves are _solitons._ But they are not the subject here. The proper term for what beach-goers experience -- for what they call "sneaker waves" -- is _infragravity waves._ Oceanographers often refer to infragravity waves as surfbeat.

@@xyzct Thanks for a better identification. Since we regularly get sneaker wave alerts from coastal weather notices, I am assuming that there are measurements that can predict sneaker wave formations.
@xyzct3 жыл бұрын
@@pooderbill, surfbeat (or infragravity waves) are always present, but it's the period and amplitude that matter. The long period, high amplitude conditions that catch beach-goers are usually during the winter, when there are two or more large, long period swells from different directions.

It takes less than 5" of water to lift and roll 1,000 pound logs. Playing on top of logs along the surf line is incredibly dangerous. Logs will lift and roll in just a few seconds, trapping people underneath.
