Ever been stuck in an airport, parched and hungry? You've already spent a fortune on tickets and baggage fees, and somehow you end up buying a giant Toblerone and a $5 water. You're not alone. Spending in airports hit $40 billion in 2017. On average, travelers will spend anywhere from $11 and $140 per airport visit. But all that spending is not entirely your fault. Airports are purposely laid out to lead passengers through moneymaking areas.

@@MS-hb3ol I travelled via London's Heathrow airport two months ago and I brought an empty bottle inside. Alas, there were no drinking fountains to be found. I asked different employees, all pointing to the washrooms. I had to buy one that cost 1.5 pounds. In Toronto where I started my flight, there were many drinking fountains around.

Random travel tips: 1. Pack your carry-on light. Pack only what you’re going to need/want on the flight, possibly some pyjamas, and living essentials in case your suitcase gets lost. 2. Unless you have specific needs (allergies, sensitive skin, etc.), you don’t need to pack your, large bottles of shampoo, conditioner, or lotion, given that you’re staying at a hotel. I’ve never been to a hotel where you can’t find these inside the bathroom. But make sure to check your hotel’s information, to see about supply. 3. Some airports I’ve been to allow you to bring your own food through security. Check the information about the airport, and see if there’s anything about bringing food through security. And if you bring food, make it a light, inexpensive thing, like a sandwich. That way, if it gets taken away at security, it won’t be a big waste on money. 4. If possible, have another family member, who isn’t going on the trip to take your car home from the airport, instead of paying for parking. If you don’t have anyone to take you to the airport, take a uber or bus. If your trip is very long, an uber is much cheaper. 5. Don’t save packing to the last minute. If your flight is in the morning, pack everything that you aren’t going to need to get ready that morning the night before, and pack the rest in the morning. 6. If you have extra space in your bag, put a few reusable bags in there. They help if you don’t have space in your suitcase for the trip home. Airlines usually allow something under the seat, and something in the overhead bin, so pack a reusable bag, and store it in the overhead bin if you can.

In the UK, you can leave your car in security parking lots for holidays one being purple parking which is significantly cheaper than parking in the airport itself. They also have free buses (if you paid for parking) to and from the airport so you wouldn't need to pay for transport

I once had a dream that took that rather literally. After clearing security, I ended up in this huge complex of outdoor things, entertainment all over the place, no timekeeping devices, and impossible corridors that don't even show the planes, clearly meant to make you wander the airport for as long as possible, in hopes of getting you to shop. I liked that airport, but practically, I ended up missing my flight, and I didn't find my way out until I woke up.

Some things I do to keep costs down at airports include not driving myself, but getting a ride, packing snacks in my purse, having my phone & kindle on me so I can entertain myself, and having my water bottle. I empty it before going into security then have either a restaurant fill it up, or just find a water fountain. I may look at some shops to pass the time, but I don't buy anything.

Airports have two huge allies to earn money: size and time. While you wait forever for your plane, you just have to read something unless you have an iPhone and have things to do. Also, such a large place, great distances, and time, it's likely you'd want something to eat or drink, especially in light of the fact the airlines don't exactly wine&dine you on board...

Top tip at Gatwick South terminal. When you come through security, the escalators lead down in to the duty free area. If you turn left before them past some airport lounges, this leads you straight to the weathersoons on the upper mezzanine where there is also plenty of seating. I used to have to travel through there a lot and this kept me away from spending money, apart from that pint of beer of course.

I work at Dubai Airports and yes they show gates here only 90 minutes prior to boarding. But it's not because it forces people to stay in the main lobby to get them to spending. But it's because Airplanes tend to lose their parking slots hence gate changes happen more frequently which would cause passengers to miss the flight (downsides of having aerobridges). This wouldnt happen if all the gates were operated with remote bays and not bridges.

Another reason they can charge so much is because you have no other option. Normally if a store has crazy prices, you can leave and go to another one. But in the airport, you’re stuck and you have pretty much no other option if you are hungry or bored or want to buy something in general, because you can’t leave once you’ve gone through security and check-in.

🤔 I’ve definitely noticed Seattle Tacoma airport has the best food options out of any other airport I’ve been to. I didn’t know there was a rule about it. Come to think of it, the bathrooms were cleaner and there were more available outlets and usb charging ports than other airports. Their art installations were nice too. I wonder what they’re doing correct with port management there.
@TheUrbanGaze
@TheUrbanGaze 2 жыл бұрын
Seattleite here. Our port commission is elected, and the airport is run by the same people who run our incredibly profitable seaport, which probably translates into an economy of scale for the airport, lowering rent. I'm not sure exactly, but I believe that the interests of the public and the economy of scale are what's going on.

In Phillippines, they also charge a terminal entrance fee at the airport, because its not included in the plane ticket :-D And here in Prague, there is an entrance fee to enter the airport parking lot even if you just drop someone off..and even then you have only 15 minutes free parking, so people picking up someone, often wait in the fields and backroads nearby, in case of a delay..

3:13 Not putting up gates on screen isn't only to compel people to stay in the lobby area, the bay number could always change depending on availability and it's risky to tell passengers the gate number upfront. The best is to list it on screens once the bay and gates are confirmed and that usually takes about 90 mins before departure. I work at Dubai Airport and this move has literally saved passengers going to the wrong gate (after it was changed to another gate) and missing the flight.

Eh... I mostly fly between Korea and Japan. This is my experience: 1. I always fly by LCC. I often get tickets $60 or so each way. 2. Both countries have fast and cheap public transportation to the airport. Never need to drive and park long-term. 3. I never bother with duty free. I fly for sightseeing or work: not shopping. 4. Tons of restaurants in Korean and Japanese airports I could get a meal for $10 or less. 5. Both also have convenience stores that have the SAME prices at convenience stores in the city; so no overpriced water. 6. Korea is a card-based country. Japan is moving away from cash. I find myself rarely needing to exchange much cash. 7. When I have time to kill, I use the airport's free wifi and watch something on my phone. In short, I naturally don't spend much money at the airport.

I only buy some chocolate and maybe some other candy normally when traveling, maybe a perfume if I’m looking for something specific and the duty free shop has it. Only reason I buy chocolates and candies in the airport is because of the larger quantities for a decent price compared to my local grocery store, and sometimes the airport has items that I can not find in my local grocery store. I tend to try to avoid eating at the airport and most definitely try to avoid having to buy water, at least if I’m flying with a bit better airline. If I’m flying some cheap airline then I’ll probably bring a water bottle or two on the flight to not have to buy anything in-flight, or if I’m landing at such a time so I can’t buy anything until the morning on my destination it also makes sense to buy some on airport, so that’s what I did when flying with Norwegian to Crete in 2015 as I arrived my hotel in the middle of the night and didn’t want to drink the tap water there, and it was hot (August). But when I’ve flown to China with KLM, SAS or Lufthansa, I just buy some chocolate and candy at the airport both to nibble on during flight and my stay abroad, and then the same for way back home to have some yummies at home. I spend maybe 20USD or something like that at the airport normally.
