I love how all the boxarts were presented like books back then. It really spoke to how, in the 16 bit era, gaming effectively left its twitchy arcade roots and developed into adolescent storytelling medium. In my opinion between the PS1 era and now, gaming has largely gone off track by becoming too obsessed with realistic graphics rather than the unique stories games can create in the mind of the player. Some of the abstraction of the 16 bit era (and the dreamlike quality of the music) was necessary to effectively and practically present a story to the gamer. Since, like a book, you had to use your imagination for alot of it.
@woozie___2 жыл бұрын
@@glennwwicks good points here, the more "realistic" games get the less fun they become. Hopefully games like Cuphead can show developers that games can still be artistic, they don't have to be lifelike, but most importantly they need to be fun
@danbrown2542 жыл бұрын
Cheers to this. Better graphics =/= a better game. Crysis and Cave Story are two fine examples of this concept - Crysis is hi-def garbage, while Cave Story is a lo-fi masterpiece. It's recently been all about pretty, open-world games with nothing inside but mundane repetitiveness, and I absolutely hate it. Games like Breath of the Wild, No Man's Sky, and Fallout 4 all lack diversity and imagination, and it just ends up being thin gameplay stretched across an enormous playing field. It's all flash and no substance these days; it seems like most game developers are more concerned with it _looking_ like a cutting-edge video game, rather than actually being one.
@TheChickenenchilada Жыл бұрын
@@danbrown254 Excellent points and agree on all fronts. I hope to one day soon see a gaming renaissance. We've reached the final frontier of perfect graphics, now let's go backwards and live within a limited, graphically styled game that focuses on incredible gameplay and storytelling.
@WarriorBoy Жыл бұрын
This is such an insightful comment. I appreciate the idea of an "adolescent storytelling medium" because so many games (not all, there's exceptions) try to actively be a TV show, movie, *and* a game all at once instead of focusing on an experience. Interaction is the whole point, and some games seem like they get the scripts that weren't even good enough to be a Netflix show (and we know about their standards). I remember arguing with a friend growing up, even at a young age as we headed into the late 90s that "real" graphics weren't the point; at least not to me. The point wasn't for it to be real, we live in what's real! It's about the experience!

Such an ironic way to reminisce upon such a treasured memory. Thank you for the both of these playlists! I have to say you have introduced me to a few cool games that i would have never have given the time of day. Number one in my mind would be waterworld, I wouldn't have bought that with someone else's money haha, but the soundtrack is just awesome!

The way you present these music videos is so good. The type of music is presented plainly in the title, with the origin of each song in the video. One of the most under rated KZbinrs I think.

Discovered Part one circa one year ago, been listening to it during work (also when reading, cooking, it fits with soo many activities!) ever since. And now you made part two! I think that I've never been so happy to see a new YT video in my life. :D Thank you soooo much!

What's so wild about these playlists is how many times I find myself thinking something like "Is that a song from Dakken? is that even what that game was called, maybe draken or something? Haven't even thought of that game in decades". Then I stop what I'm doing, come here, and see the box art of a game that I didn't remember existed but apparently the music and box art was stored in my brain. Also, Drakkhen wasn't exactly a good game, but I can now remember playing it for dozens and dozens of hours. This goes on for a bunch of these games. Some that I played for dozens or even hundreds of hours, some that I just rented for a weekend. All of their music is somewhere lost in my mind but comes to the surface when listening to these playlists. Anyway, thanks!

Interesting... Illusion of Gaia has a song that sounds like it's from SimEarth--and coincidentally it's called "In The Earthen Womb"

Legit. I have been listening to a lot of jRPG soundtracks/remakes while working. This is a great addition to the playlist!

All the people who complain should be happy. Sad thing is, less material for another call-out.
