0-10 Let's continue the story about the snipe - a secretive bird, which is rarely observed in nature. The first part of the film told about the nesting behavior of this bird in spring and early summer.
In the 2nd series, the period of summer and pre-migratory migrations of snipes in the Moscow region will be covered, and the neighbors of the snipe, near-water birds living next to it, will also be shown.
00:40 Summer is a quiet time in the life of snipes.
The young have already learned to fly and the chicks have separated from their parents. Now everyone, even a young snipe, is independent - he rests and feeds where he wants.
1:00 On shallow reservoirs, which are few in summer, waders of various species feed, adults and grown chicks of this year.
This male lapwing flew in from a nearby field. And he's not one of the wader neighbors here.
Some of the migratory northern waders, like this Spotted Redshank, for some reason were delayed and now roam in the Moscow region.
1:33 And two Black-winged Stilts, which have never been seen so far north of their range before.
In the south of our country, these are familiar birds. inhabiting all shallow stagnant water bodies, but here they are unusual guests.
1:50 Bar-tailed godwit successfully nested in the Moscow region and now adult birds are not burdened with worries about offspring.
Bar-tailed godwits rest, adjusting their plumage.
In such a relaxed state, they will spend the whole summer.
2:33 Many places where snipes were common in spring have now become unsuitable for these waders: shallow water bodies have dried up, and tall herbaceous plants have grown in the meadows: meadowsweet, cinquefoil, willow-herb and wild grasses.
Therefore, many waders move from unfavorable places and gather in areas rich in food.
There should be a good view here, allowing you to notice land-based predators in advance.
If the birds are not disturbed, they will spend several days on this reservoir.
There is plenty of food around, and daylight hours are long, so after searching for food and feeding, waders have a lot of free time.
3:00 The nesting period of the snipe ended in June, and now the molting has begun.
Replacing a feather requires a lot of energy from the body, so the birds feed diligently and take care of their plumage for a long time.
Growing chicks face many dangers.
4:00 Here the yellow-headed wagtail became worried and flew off the stem. And the snipe became alarmed and began to examine the sky.
4:10 Wetlands are constantly patrolled by birds of prey. For example, Western Marsh Harrier and Hen Harrier search for food for their grown chicks all daylight hours.
The prey of these birds are often not only mouse-like rodents, but also inexperienced chicks of birds living in the meadows.
4:27 And in the evening, the neighbor of the snipe, Redshank, became worried. This means that a Short-eared Owl has appeared nearby. And if an owl is worried, it means that a fox has come out to hunt. This predator is dangerous for all birds nesting on the ground.
4:40 When the neighboring birds have calmed down, you can no longer watch the sky and go about your daily business.
Predators always cause a stir in the bird population with their appearance, so many birds rely on the calls of alarm from their neighbors.
5:20 After the appearance and then departure of a predator, snipes behave cautiously for a long time - they stay near thickets of aquatic plants or even take refuge in them.
Waders at first cautiously listen to the voices of their neighbors, but quickly begin to probe the soil with their beaks in search of food.
Then, gradually calming down, they move away from the thickets.
You can see an openly feeding snipe already an hour after the end of the alarm.
In July, snipes are not family related. Males are quite tolerant of recent rivals and other snipes.
But young birds often stick to the parents' site, so 2 or more birds fall into the observer's field of view.
6:20 Next to the snipes, a Greenshank also feeds on the same reservoir. It is more lanky and plunges headlong into the water in search of the same objects that the snipe catches.
The Greenshank has long legs and the beak is slightly bent upwards, which helps the observer to immediately distinguish it from our other waders by its appearance.
Even more upturned beak has only the Terek Sandpiper, but it has shorter legs than the Greenshank.
7:30 In summer, comfortable puddles and shallows are visited even by those waders that you will not see here in spring.
For example, the Green Sandpiper is a forest sandpiper that incubates its eggs in old nests of thrushes and jays.
But in the summer, young and adult Green Sandpipers leave the forest and begin to roam. That's when, in July, the Green Sandpipers feed singly on the shallows of reservoirs along with other waders.
