Just a tip, you can customize your loadout to fit your style, it’s in the very front of the mission select book. You would be able to equip the Webley you got and use it in other levels.

While yeah it's just a mechanic to make VR easier, I kind of like the idea of Grandpa secretly having been a telekinetic sniper warrior who used his Esper powers to singlehandedly won several major WWII battles. "What my children could never know, until they learned their gift- was that they could pull objects to their hands from at least 3 feet away, and truly this was sometimes the only edge I had on my opponents, and sometimes it was the only edge I needed."
