It’s a traditional set up and take down and makes fun of his mental illlness and suicide ideation, in an attempt to say he isn’t going to be inspired by John’s family but the opposite be driven to suicide, that ‘normal’ or sober is not a good, thing but intolerable. It’s effective on a number of levels, but I don’t think it’s funny at all.
