John, you have inspired me, at the age of 56 and recently retired to learn hobby machining. I have recently bought a 1934 southbend lathe and round column mill.

Another great video; Good, straight talking, no nonsense info. As an amateur model engineer it is rare that I don’t learn something from your videos.

RE-POSTED Hi John. Another great video. Everyone in the model engineering community keeps breaking off parting tool blades, and it's one of the scariest operations that a new comer can do, when that tool breaks off and flies off somewhere!!!! (Hence why people should always wear a full face visor) Lots on KZbinrs have suggested using a rear mounted tool post with blade mounted upside down. That definitely works, but means a lot of faffing around. SUGGESTION: If you have a lathe that can run in reverse, just use the front mounted tool post, as normal, but turn the parting tool upside down with the cutting edge on centre. Try it. It doesn't dig in, in fact it will lift before getting embedded into you work piece.

John, I use "alien snot" for drilling, tapping and surface cutting, but when cutting off, I found that dripping hydraulic oil with an oil can into the groove does a whole lot better.

You need to put one of these engines in a bicycle with a air tank.

.. Howdy John,.. Just a bit of advice asked regarding the Harrison 140 ,... I've suffered a devastating workshop fire last Wednesday and lost everything in there including my beloved Harrison 11,.. I'm looking at getting another Harrison after I've rebuilt the workshop and remember you mentioning the magical three lever lead screw gearbox on the 140,.. Is it better to go for the 140 over the imperial 11",... Cheers from Wimbledon,.. Dan.

The 140 has,a,2 speed motor as well as the better gear box Well worth trying to find one
