Snorkelling at Silfra, a fissure in Iceland

Information about the snorkelling:
The trip lasted 30-45 minutes and was in 2-3°C water so we had to wear a dry suit plus neoprene gloves and hat. This cold water flows into Silfra from an underground source, originating from the Langjökull Glacier. It has been filtered through 50km of volcanic rock for 50-100 years before reaching Silfra, so it is very clear and safe to drink. Because of this filtration, the only thing living in Silfra is algae, there are no fish or other animals. Silfra is a fissure in the ground that opened up due to the pulling apart of the Eurasian and North American plates. Some parts of the crack reach depths of 40+ metres. Ultimately, the snorkelling was very fun and is a great experience, but a bit chilly.

How much did the dry suit aid in staying afloat?

The suit itself was buoyant, along with the air trapped inside. It was nearly impossible to swim under the water at all. It kept you at the surface
