Snow blower does not throw snow MTD 4.5 21 single stage

Ever had one of those days..? snow blower not starting.. then once running, not blowing any snow... let's dig in.

I had a Toro which was a lemon. When it started and stayed running, it would remove snow very well--better than the MTD. The Toro scraper is spring loaded so it stays in contact with the ground better. But no one could fix it--you can only clean the carb so many times--and I replaced every other part except the engine--so and I gave up on it and picked up one of these for peanuts. Replaced the rubber and scraper. Starts on a dime and does a reasonable job of snow removal. Just used it today for the first time on a 3" snowfall. It was screeching under heavy load, so I think the belt needs tensioning or replacement. That will probably improve its performance. Had two other Tecumseh single stages--an Ariens and a Simplicity--and their engines started and ran just as flawlessly.

Thanks, I have a similar one but now atleast I know where to start. My auger is making a rattle sound so not sure what happened there.

Hi there, would of really liked to see how it performed with the repair. How well did it throw snow? Its an older unit with a differently designed intake. Does it perform as good as newer models with one solid paddle used to scoop the snow? I recently acquired one that was put to the curb for garbage. After cleaning the carb, bowl and a little playing around it runs great, starts on first pull. Very excited to see how it performs, on its own, and against my neighbors who has a toro single stage. Great video bud...

It works well assuming your paddles and belt are in good shape. I like how simple it is to maintain and easy to work on. The toro has a better paddle design (power curve) so I think the toro will out perform the MTD given the same variables. I sold the MTD in the video long ago but used the same model growing up. They are pretty bullet proof. I bet you can’t wait for the snow 😂 thanks for commenting
