Being inside helps keep the shielding gas in place. While it is a good idea to move it out, with the heated floor, recovery time is minimal. Close the doors and it is back to temp in about 5 minutes. Hey mr Josh, the ethanol comment is so true. Ethanol has water in it, the older machines really catch hell having to run with that.

I run non-ethanol fuel in everything but my car as well. It makes a HUGE difference, especially with the life of smaller things like weed eaters and chain saws and snow blowers. It’s more expensive but cheaper than new equipment for sure. It’s remarkable how many people don’t know that.
@TopperMachineLLC20 сағат бұрын
I go through about 25 gallons a month on an annual average in my tractors, loader, and small engines. When we are sawing, I'll go through that in a week or less. The extra cost of the nonethanol fuel has never concerned me knowing I won't have issues.
@mmi1616 сағат бұрын
When I was actively racing I would use my leftover 110 Octane nonethanol race fuel in the lawn mower at the end of the year. A couple of years I forgot and had to have new carb in the spring as the ethanol corroded up the little passages in the carbs. Now tha I am not racing and don't have race fuel on hand - I drain the tank and run the machine out of gas for the Winter.

My best guess is the white build up on the jet is Zinc build up from water contamination. You see it a lot in carbs that are poorly maintained or in carbs that sit for awhile and don't get run very often, ethanol gasoline is notorious for this as it absorbs moisture, but since you use a non-ethanol gasoline the water is probably from condensation in the tank. Great video as always Josh! 👍👍
@shannonstebbens69925 сағат бұрын
I have quite a bit of experience with these engines. Just a note: shutting off the fuel is generally a very good practice. Although, it only burns the fuel in the float bowl down to a level where the main jet will no longer pick it up. There is still quite a lot of fuel in the bowl when the engine stops due to fuel exhaustion. The white deposits could be from this residual fuel level and evaporation. Also, many of us watch to learn and not to criticize your methods. I hope you will pay no attention to the haters.
@TopperMachineLLC5 сағат бұрын
Thank you. Great point on there still being fuel in the bowl. Some carbs do run dry, but now with your comment and remembering the jet configuration, this makes total sense.

Hey Matt, when you throttled up the Wisconsin V4 it sounded pretty fast to me. These things have a pretty crude oiling system that squirts oil from the side of the block into a hole in the con rod at the incredibly low pressure of 5 psi when warmed up. 15 psi cold. I have two of these lumps of iron. One on a log splitter and one on a 15 kW generator. Get a spindle tach and measure the RPM and set the governor rev limit per the engine model manual which is around 2200-2400 rpm. These things are very prone to tossing a rod out the side from over revving. If you watch the revs and overloading, these 1937 designed things will run forever. Hope we have another mild winter and you don't need it. Steve in Oconomowoc

Inline filter is a good idea, but there isn't much room. fuel line is only a few inches long, and in a tight spot. But when the hose is failing, that is another issue beyond the filter.

Hey Josh, back about 40 years ago I used to maintain some bigger snowblowers, lived in a place that got LOTS of snow and keeping the roads open in the plant was a big deal. I learned to hate them, and living in that much snow I learned to hate snow too. So I moved LOL. Now I live in a part of Canada that has the mildest winter. right now it is 4 with an expected high of 8 ( so 33 - 48 ). No snow yet, if we do get any it goes away really quick. If I want snow I have a ski hill about 40 min away, they have about 7 feet already. Christmas day calling for 50 mm rain (2") and about 7 degrees (43 F ) Snow blower story time. We had a much bigger version of what you have, mounted on a Cat 966C loader. Can't remember clearly but I think it had a Cummins 555 for power. We had this one brain dead operator running it, he figured out that if he tilted the unit forward, the bottom auger would touch the pavement and since it was a fairly dry snow that day, it cleaned the pavement down to bare. Why he decided to go this route instead of leaving it on the shoes and letting the cutting edge do it's thing is beyond clear thought. All was fine until he ran it into a piece of the pavement that was broken up a bit and well the auger ate it. I don't even want to remember the destruction. Broke the cutting edge, mangled the auger, pushes the side of the unit out. We did have a spare machine, it was a 1950's vintage Sicard, took 2 men to operate so the push was on to get this steaming pile of crap back together. Yup, that was a fun couple of days. Then we would get a wet snow and the blowers would plug, don't want to remember that either. I hope that the business picks up. I know the value of a good machine shop and machinist, I have been lucky enough to work with some really excellent ones over the years. I'm retired now, heavy equipment mechanic, too far away and in a different country to help you out. I do enjoy your videos.

Interesting that you mentioned ethanol fuel. We've been using E10 (up to 10% ethanol) since in was introduced here in Australia, most of the time in our cars and we have had no issues in all that time. I do however, use plain 91 unleaded in all my lawn and garden equipment, mowers, brush cutter and chainsaws. I have a Honda mower and brush cutter and it specifies not to use ethanol fuel, so I don't use it in them. We fill a five gallon drum with 91 unleaded when we need it, so everything for lawn and garden gets 91. There has been rumour that ethanol may be mandated in all fuel, but that has not happened, so it may or may not happen.
@TopperMachineLLC14 сағат бұрын
For your sake, I hope it isn't mandated. Ethanol ruins a lot if stuff.
@jjohnson25537 сағат бұрын
Gas evaporates whether it contains ethanol or not. So it is going to go bad sooner or later. Sooner if your fuel tank/system is vented. I use nothing but ethanol free in my boat, ATV, motorcycle, pressure washer, blower, weed eater, mower, etc. I've had fuel go bad just over the course of the winter months due to evaporation. My winter temps are probably mild by comparison to yours which may be part of the reason for the rate of evaporation, but it does happen. My boat is the one thing I don't worry about too much because I can manually close the vent on that fuel tank to slow down the evaporation. Everything else gets stabilizer unless I get lazy or forget. It's cheap insurance against having to clean a carb and fuel system.

" 10 to 20 below with low humidity is much warmer than 28 degrees with humidity". That's a good one. I know what you mean but it's not warmer. Lol. Yes ethanol fuel is junk but even non ethanol isn't as good as the old leaded fuel was. Every hard face electrode ( wire or stick ) is insanely expensive. I've had good luck using stainless electrode on certain things to give it a harder surface. Bought lots of it for dirt cheap at auctions

@@TopperMachineLLCIn northern WI Most Fleet Farms with gas stations have mid range ETOH free gasoline which is cheaper than premium ETOH free. Some Kwick Trips have ETOH Free 87 octane about $ .40 - $ .50 more than regular $ .40 - $ .50 less than premium.

@@TopperMachineLLCjosh...im putting a 353 detroit on my Mckee 7 ft 2 stage snow blower to quick attach to my 580 SL....yours looks like it has an overcenter clutch going to a speed multiplier to increase rotational speed and chain and sprockets to Spin the Auger??? Is your unit only a single Stage as i dont see a fan housing behind the Engine....🤷♂️
@TopperMachineLLC19 сағат бұрын
@richardsedenquist3222 yes, single stage and great reduction. I looked at several 2 stage units but they were too big. I really isn't want a 2 stage as they are more mechanically prone to failure. Simple is always better. I used to clear my yard with a 1969 cub cadet and 42" snow thrower. Knowing what a good single stage can do, I have no regrets. This will do the job.

@richardsedenquist3222 I never took it as negative. I prefer a single stage, but that's my choice. I'd love to see your unit when done.

It's your site and the work is all yours, but I still want you to know that I do not enjoy these follow-up videos and don't watch them. If everyone else loves them that's fine. I don't have to watch them and can still enjoy the regular videos. No snow here in central Europe yet.

That is totally up to you. I don't hold anything against you for not watching them. A lot of people love them. What you watch is totally your choice. No hard feelings here.

The way it ran good briefly upon start up, then sputtering…. Sounds like it wasn’t getting good fuel flow to the carb

It may not act up. If it does, its a 30 minute fix in a heated shop. Not worth tearing into it until it really fails.

Ethanol is not the devil, does it need a little different handling, yes. It offers much more environmentally friendly octane improvement than alternatives. The biggest problem is the oil companies dont make it and spend a fortune demonizing it and as a result people spend a fortune on gasoline that they probably dont need.
@TopperMachineLLC13 сағат бұрын
I disagree 100% ethanol is bad all around. Look into the environmental impacts of its production. From start to finish, it is horrible.
@darmah195913 сағат бұрын
@@TopperMachineLLC There is a lot of misinformation about ethanol and it has become popular to blame everything on it. Sure it has its issues, but not what is commonly thought. Its environmental impact is actually a lot less than any alternatives. I have worked in alt fuel area for a long time, happy to continue this offline if you want. Like unleaded fuel, whether you like it or not, it is here to stay.
