I'm excited to be doing my first snow camping at Mt Rainier National Park! I've gone camping and backpacking in the past during the summer seasons, but this will be my first time doing some snow camping.
If you're going to be going camping for the first time in a snowy winter climate, there are a couple of things that you should know.
--------------------------------------------------------
List of Essential Items You Will Need:
1) Tent. It's important to have a good warm tent to fight off the winter temperatures. I have a 3-season REI Co-op Flash Air 2 Tent that I purchased for ~$350 back in 2020 and it did a fairly decent job. Wasn't perfect, but good enough. www.rei.com/product/168565/re...
2) Sleeping pads: You'll likely want one of those inflatable sleeping pads rather than a mat. This will be VERY IMPORTANT because the tent does not do a good job of keeping the bottom part warm and if you're only going to rely on a sleeping bag for warmth, you'll likely have a very bad time. This is the sleeping pad I used: www.nemoequipment.com/product...
3) Sleeping Bag: Make sure to have a very warm sleeping bag. Ideally you want temperatures that cover all winter / cold conditions. I ended up using the Lafuma Extreme 1000 for my sleeping bag. The bag is rated for 30F or -3C. I still felt a little chilly with this one so I'd recommend something a lot warmer that covers a lower range in temperatures just to be warm and comfortable.
4) Flashlight/ headlamp: Once the sun goes down, it's going to get pretty dark. Get yourself a decent flashlight / headlamp for vision.
5) First-Aid Kit: Just your standard first-aid kit bag.
6) Warm Clothing / Extra Clothing: I brought extra warm layers of clothing just in case. The weather can always turn at any moment so always make sure to bring extra clothes, jackets, socks, warm pants just in case!

What You Should Know Before Visiting Mt Rainier
Entrance fee for the park will be $30.
You will need to register your group before heading up to the camp site. Stop by the Longmire visitor center to register your group. The price for registration is $6. We had a group of 6 people for this price. Not sure how much it costs for bigger groups.
YOU WILL NEED TO ENTER/ EXIT THE PARK by 4PM! The Longmire gates close at 4pm so if you don't make it up/down by then, you will not be able to enter/ exit the park.

Very thorough and informative! I car camped here last year but that was before I was making videos. This was a fun way to re-live my visit. Thanks! It really is such a beautiful place.

Would you be willing to give the general area where you camped? Want to take my daughter winter camping and not get too far from the car. Great spot!!

If you look at Google maps. Search near the paradise Inn. If you look left of the area you'll see a NisquallyVista trail. We parked along that loop. Hiked a little bit along the deadhorse creek trail (you won't see a sign as it's probably buried in snow). But just kept walking until we decided to set up camp.
