Hello Doug, Flashing headlights is generally considered a form of speech and therefore is protected under the First Amendment. You are absolutely correct that the officer was using any excuse to hunt for drunk drivers. If it ever happens again, your son should explain to the officer that his driving with his high beams when traffic is approaching is illegal in Pennsylvania and the officer was creating unsafe conditions. Hence the use of the high beam flash to signal of hazardous conditions. The officer should then write himself a ticket for violating Pennsylvania Statutes Title 75 Pa.C.S.A Vehicles 4306. Then, invoke his right to stay silent. NEVER answer the "Where are you coming from?", "Have you had anything to drink?" questions, EVER!

Hey Doug, a few years ago I was at a traffic light behind a cop car in Montgomery, IL (Chicago suburb) The light turned green and two officers in the car were messing around with a lap top. They were laughing and carrying on so I tapped my horn to let them know the light was green. The driver looked up and pulled away and off to the side. As I passed him he got in behind me and pulled me over. I asked him why he pulled me over and he said for illegal use of my horn. I asked him when using my horn was legal and he said in case of an emergency. I told him I thought being stopped at a green light in front of moving traffic was an emergency. I also told him I thought he was embarrassed I honked my horn and he was using his authority to make up. I told him I would be happy to go to court and discuss the "illegal use of my horn" with him, the judge and my lawyer. He let me go (probably because he never intended to give me a ticket in the first place). I wouldn't think the cop that pulled your son over had his high beams on looking for a victim but I do believe he was flexing because he was embarrassed. A cop friend of mine said it best. "there are allot of cops. Many of us are heroes, some of us are Assholes!" Good luck!

"Equal Opportunity Candy Blower". In our little town we have a Christmas parade where people line each side of the street, especially children, to get all the candy that is thrown out by the passing floats and parade entrants. Your leaf blower could solve the problem for the people who are further back and they want some candy too. Just point the blower at different angles and pitch a handful of candy in there - voila, everybody gets candy! Also, the parade judges would certainly award you as "best entrant" because nobody in our town has ever seen anything like that before.😄

This is the perfect example that you & Autumn are exemplary parents. You’ve raised your children with love & respect. That is very evident. I will side with a great many of the comments here, this was fishing or entrapment. It’s odd that the officer had to break the law himself in order to pull your son over. I can be a stirrer when I need to be. I would investigate what you need to do, to get that law changed. It’s common sense that a quick flash is just an indicator here in Iowa that your headlights are way too bright. I don’t know how things like that get changed. I don’t know if you could contact your local representative or state senator and see if you can get a bill going that would do away with this insane infraction. All that aside, Doug what a wonderful video and always informative! This is the perfect PSA for this time of year. Blessings to you and your family. See you in the next one.

Hi Doug, I really like your videos especially trying new things like your big blower for snow. It was fun and I think with the right kind of snow your blow will be another great option in removing snow. About the stop: When I was a young man (I am a senior citizen now) I was pulled over one evening after dark by the Ohio Highway Patrol. The reason was that I had my brights on when I passed the OHP. As a result, he flashed his lights at me (telling me to dim) but I couldn't find the dimmer on the floor since it was my first time driving this car. Ironically, as a favor, I was driving a man who had too much to drink home from the local pub & grub. I too have great respect for our law enforcement folks. It is a tough job. But this fellow was upset that he couldn't get me or the owner of the car on a DUI. So in the end, I was ticketed for failing to dim my lights for an oncoming car, especially after being warned by the oncoming Officers car flashing his headlights at me. Its an imperfect world, isn't it Doug! LOL

I live in rural Eastern Oregon, and this same thing happened to me. I flashed him not once but two times because we were on a long narrow two lane road and I saw him from far off. He did not once flash me back to let me know that his beams weren’t on high. This is something I also was taught and it was a courtesy flash not a malicious leave on your brights to blind the other driver. I learned from this that, in my situation only, I needed to get something to wear to protect me from this kind of this “I don’t care” behavior. So I got something eye shields (like sunglasses…) to allow me to see the road, but not the bright headlights.

I will preface that I am not a LEO, but have over a decade in Public Safety working alongside LEOs. The flashing of the high beams is something we have ingrained in us through years of driving. It used to be a courtesy to do kind of like the horn is an audible warning device. It is a violation in most states to flash the beams (now if you held them on for a couple of seconds that would not have been a flash). In any case, too many vehicles today have lights that are exceedingly bright, way above what is necessary on the roadway, lights that are harsh white colors that destroy night vision, and lights that are incorrectly aimed. It is all to common on law enforcement vehicles to use a pure white LED light or Laser Peojection bulb, this puts as much forward light as possible to see inside vehicles, prevent a driver from seeing toward the rear in a traffic stop, and to a lesser extent make reflective clothing stans out more. Tell your son, in the future when this occurs, slow down. If necessary engage his hazard lights, keep eyes on the fog line, and then when safe to do so report the driver (cop or not) to local 9-1-1 or other emergency services number. This way if it is a cop, there is a record of why you took these safety measures.

It’s called fishing Doug. Like fishing not everyone has the same ethics or standards. I don’t condone the officers standards at all, but after a career of wearing a uniform I do know that there are usually two stories told from two sides of every traffic stop. Some cheap, low trained officers hate video! I spent over 20 years working our highways and video was always my best friend. You’re right, had this officer enforced that chicken sh.., he would been ridiculed by court and coworkers.

Definitely fishing/entrapment. You should be able to file a public records request with the issuing police department to request copies of every ticket that cop wrote for that evening (and I'd probably also ask for the preceding couple of days and the following 3 or 4 days of the holiday weekend) to see how many "flashing headlight" tickets that cop wrote during the time period. With that information, I'd probably contact the Police Chief to let him know you'll be contesting the ticket in court unless they drop the ticket(s). If there's a pattern and the PD don't back down, I'd plead not guilty in the traffic court and fight it. A couple of things will happen then - either the cop won't show up and you'll win or he will show up and you can expose this practice in front of the judge. NOTE: The "public records request" is not a "Freedom of Information Act Request". A FOIA is a Federal thing. PRR's are state/local things. And, quit having so much fun on that blower!! LOL!

Secondary or experimental use of equipment is always fun 😊 I hesitantly am commenting on your son's situation because I'm not sure where you live or what the stance of your local or state police agencies are. In my experience, of almost 30 years, of law enforcement in my area DUI's are not something police like to do, or intentionally look for. As you have stated the time of year is when an increase in such activity does occur. The flashing headlights thing is on the books, locally to me, but is rarely enforced and rarely prosecuted. I give your son all of the credit in the world for articulating what he was doing while reaching for his ID and for questioning and explaining the light flickering. He was acting responsibly and respectfully and putting the officer at ease as well as himself. A traffic stop is a stressful situation for both the driver and the officer and he did everything right. I can't speak to the motivation of the officer but apparently no ticket was issued so I would say that your son's actions proved that there was nothing to pursue.

For that light dusting of snow, spread Calcium Chloride instead of rocks salt. It is more environmentally friendly. Yes it does cost more, but salt is corrosive. Calcium chloride is able to melt ice at the low low temperature of -20°F, which is lower than any other ice melt products. Rock salt only melts down to 20°F, or a full 40°F difference. Most of the northern states of the US easily dip below 20°F during the winter. There are times when sodium chloride just won’t cut it. Now our super hero Calcium Chloride can melt at temperatures that most of the US will never see.

Back in the 1970s I drove a tow truck for the local county police, I'd tow in breakdowns or drunk drivers. Then I was an over-the-road driver through the early 2000s. Back in the 70's we were taught, if you're on a two-lane road, not to use our high beams with oncoming traffic. Instead, look down towards the right-hand shoulder and quickly glance up to make sure you're not going to be hit and repeat these steps until the lights aren't blinding you. That said, I'd give a quick flash from my high beams, then I'd look at the shoulder and glance up.

Looking down at the right hand road shoulder and it's nice if there is a white line was how I was taught during Driver's Ed. in high school back in the mid 1970's here in southeastern Illinois. My uncle Eddie drove for CF over 35 years and I remember him teaching his daughter back when we were kids to look at the white line or shoulder of the road if she could not see from oncoming headlights. I still practice this today with all the drivers that have to have LED lights so they can count the hair on a coon's butt at half mile away. Peace! -Everett

The law says that you are required to dim your headlights when approaching oncoming vehicles or within 500 feet behind a vehicle going in the same direction. And, since there is no carve-outs or exceptions for law enforcement except when their emergency lights are activated (alternating highbeam headlights) I would think if you contested that ticket under the premise that if he had been following the law, your kid wouldn't have needed to "request" that the officer dim his headlights as required. I am sure if the emergency lights had been operating he wouldn't have made that request. So, either the officer was in violation of the law also or neither of them were. Also, I would object to any court costs if they drop the ticket because the only reason you are in court is because of the officer's disregard of the legal requirements of dimming his headlights.

The DUI problem isn't about the law enforcement's ability to *catch* drunk drivers. The real problem persists at the judicial (court) level where the offence is treated too softly because the legislators and politicians know that they will personally face the wrong end of the same law. That's why loopholes and soft sentencing persist. There's no actual need for cops to be doing dirty entrapment stuff (such as happened to your son) for the sake of catching drunk drivers. Drunks get caught very easily by the thousands. Sadly, a lot of cops are just liable to use underhanded tactics and be jerks generally to prey on all citizens for various things at various times. Growing up I had two uncles on either side of the family in law enforcement. One of my cousins is married to a guy who was recruited to be a big city cop. I'm not anti-police but neither do I pay them undeserved respect as I once did. The job has changed a lot and they have become almost the enemy of the common people in many cases. Cops don't necessarily enforce laws anymore as much as they enforce personal prejudices and entrap others for financial gain through fines and seizures of your property. Many are poorly knowledgeable about updated laws in detail. As a young boy I never even saw my late uncle swing a baton aside from his police band conductor's baton. Nowadays a regular patrol cop steps out of a massive 4WD SUV dressed like a member of Seal Team Six with body armor and their hand on the heel of an automatic sidearm. Modern cops are not necessarily the good guys anymore.

Also, I’ve forgot my lights were not on high, gone to set to low beam, and realized they were not on high beam - oops. So I was not flashing the other driver, just trying to get my car set to low. As long as you are a distance away I don’t think it matters. What I don’t like is when drivers turn on their high beams just before we meet - like a few car lengths in front of me - trigger happy. This happens a lot on dark two lane country roads - people want their brights on to look for deer lurking on the side of road.

Cops think they can do what you can't. He should have gotten a ticket for running with high beams on. One way to protect yourself in cases like that is a dash cam. I have a garmin dash cam in all of my vehicles. It is 360 degrees and records audio AND is voice controlled. With all the insurance scammers and crazy drivers out there everyone should have one.

Love seeing the Buffalo turbine in the snow. Seems like it would be tons of fun. Definitely not practical of probably effective for heavy, wet snow, but for the light stuff it would be fun. Sounds like the officer was probably fishing for people to pull over. Was the officer in a car or an SUV? I know that sometimes people flash me in my SUV because they sit lower and my lights seem like high beams to them. Just a thought. Sounds like your son did things correctly in terms of the interaction with the officer. Those conversations should stay cordial rather than confrontational. It makes life easier and safer for everyone involved. Hopefully he didn’t receive a citation. If he did, it may be worth showing up to contest it.

The cop was out to nail someone. I'm very pro police but there are some who can't handle the power they are given.

Wow imagine if your son had been blinded by the cop's high beams and then had an accident. Would the cop have an interesting story to charge your son? I'm afraid I would have been arrested because I would have been so pissed off, I would have been using all sorts of language and really gotten hot.

Not anyone’s obligation to answer any questions by the police. They are fishing. Kindly ask for the ticket and drive away. The less said the better.

Unscrupulous police officers live in the gray area. Makes you think the criminal code was intentionally written with gray areas in them.

Sounds about right, and there's nothing you can do about it until you get the laws changed on qualified immunity.

It’s illegal to flash your high beams to remind the on coming car that their high beams are on but not illegal to pass a car with your high beams on ?🤔. Guys like that are what give police a bad name. Good on you and your son.

I work with the popo at least once a week. Most of them are entitled bullies. Some are good people but sadly most are garbage. My question is; is it legal to drive in PA with your brights on? It seems to me that Hunter was driving, decided to turn his brights on. Just then he realized another car was coming so he quickly turned them off.
