Here in Norway some of us sow salads, spinach, rocket, carrots and others on frozen soil and cover it with snow. Sometimes in coldframes. With the weather getting warmer it might be a problem if the seeds sprout and freeze again, but it often works well.

@@cosmo6447 that depends on when you sow and the weather, basically these seeds don't mind freezing as long as they don't get too wet. They get acclimatized and sprout in early spring when the soil is no longer frozen. Something like that. I often sow in january.

@@edibleacres Shaun, you really should! Watching you shovelling that snow and excplaining the slow hydration of the soil I wanted to shout stop! Quick, scatter some seeds under the snow! There is still time 😃

I love this time of year in our area! The sun starts to have hint of the promise of spring yet the snow sends us comfort that we are not yet behind in our garden projects. Great day to be out!

Seems like a movable high tunnel would be great to facilitate this. Deeply mulch a patch in the fall, let it sit under the snow all winter, move the tunnel there in the spring to melt the snow and warm the soil.

I think the idea of the low tunnel / emt bent conduit hoops and seasonal poly use over beds scratches this itch. Its something I need to do a lot more of!

I'm doing my winter gardening too. My broccoli is looking good as is my cilantro. I'm trying something new with my pineapples. I've noticed that the pineapples in the shade grow much larger than those in direct sunlight, so I bought a 55‰ shade cloth. The plan is to keep my main plants behind the shade cloth until they start to flower and/or fruit. The plan is to wait until the first plants are starting to fruit, but after the rest have at least flowered (hopefully). I'm hoping I'll get bigger or sweeter fruits if the plants and leaves are larger. Wish me luck, and good luck to you and your beautiful family.

Free pure water comes from beneath the earth's mantel where it is renewable and pure. It surfaces through springs and geysers. Rain water is loaded with toxins from all the weather modification.

I had a hard time starting poppy seeds indoors. I think I should have done it in a tray of soil instead of little starter plugs. I got them going, but they did not take when I put them outside. Only one or two lived for most of the season, but I’m not sure if I will see them come the spring time.

Our best poppy germination ALWAYS comes from under the place where poppy plants grew the year before!

Piling snow deeply around an Elbert’s peach has at least saved the main stem and a few connectors in the scaffolding. We had mid negative 30s for several days in Dec. of ‘22 and then -40 and upper negative 30s last Feb. of ‘24. The leader growth has been in the area of 4 feet (1.3m) . I am supposedly in zone 4b BUT, as people all over the continent are experiencing, the wild swings in temperatures, moisture and wind are making everything more difficult. No, I didn’t buy this Zone 5 peach. A neighbor bought it and offered it to me after deciding she didn’t want to care for it. Still lovely by the end of the last summers but most of crown not buried has to be pruned off . Maybe we will skip the unseasonable cold this year. Hah!

Hi again! Love to see your year around gardening strategies. I just wish I'd had any idea of your awesome ideas when I lived in Alaska. Oh well. My only concern is do you ever have trouble with the plastic being too brittle from the cold and cracking/breaking when you tap the snow off? Just wondering if the UV resistant plastic is also better able to handle the cold? All the best New Year's wishes to you all!

This stuff has been amazing... UV stabilized 6mil greenhouse poly is what we have. I got it from AM Leonard Poly Remnant sale. I wish I could recommend them in general but they have been insanely unending in sending me color catalogs even when I ask not to for YEARS! So hopefully there is another source!

For sure. Sometimes we scatter a little compost lightly on top and that helps break it down faster. For now we are not in a rush!

Aren't you worried about the Barrium, Cesium, Strontium and Aluminum in the rain water, to name a few, from all the cloud seeding/weather modification that ends up in the precipitation? I would be - unless plants are so smart that their roots avoid the harmful ingredients and only use what is healthful for them. I would think it would be much better for the soil if you could filter out some of those organic chemicals by melting the snow; running it through some charcoal and putting THAT water on the soil, I think the soil and the plants would be happier.

I hear you but I can't get that deep into that level of worry. If I can't believe in using rain and snow without high level intervention I'm cooked. I don't doubt there is gnarly stuff in it but I have to trust the wisdom of healthy soil and plants to rectify...
