Never use hot water to defrost the windshield, it might crack the glass due to sudden temperature shift. Just turn your windshield heater and put it to maximum and use an ice scrapper to scrape off the ice. But having a de-icer spray would be really helpful in these situations, it will clear off the ice in just seconds after spraying. Have a nice trip...

Put vodka instead of the wiper fluid. It only freezes over -25 degrees. And only put winter diesel from now till the rest of your trip. Normal diesel freezes over -5 degrees while winter diesel will be fine up to -30 degrees. Good luck!

Next time put the visors down, put your climate control on full heat use the windshield defroster, leave the suv running for 10-15 mins it will clear your windshield, your first line for engine temp is the indication for optimal engine running temperature, and in colder temps let the engine warm up for minimum 10 mins.. your oil starts to gel up in negative temps give the engine some time before you start driving
