Flashback for me. That was my first car. Put a set of snow tires on it or sometimes my dad would put chains on it and it would go anywhere. Even off roading with it with and kept up with my friends in jeeps. Fun times!!!

I was away from Vw's since around 1992 ...I got the " Bug " again in 2014 and went and looked at a black 1963 , red interior . The first time i sat in that car it took me right back , the smell , looking through the close windshield , the VW logo on the Lid , the front end disappears from sight ...Thank you for the kind words Kathy...get one :)))

My father bought a 58 and then a 63 Beetle brand new and he lived upstate New York he always said the Bugs were his favorite cars to drive in snow especially deep snow as he said that they rode on top of it and always had traction I was raised in Florida and we had many VW powered sand rails and others that we would use out in the muddy Everglades Many of them had big paddle tires on them that didnt make the fast but we had lots of fun ! We even had a. Old Baja with a roll cage that we purposely rolled as much as we could just for the thrill the car was street legal and we would get many looks because the overall look of the car went from round to square. As it formed around the roll cage inside the car I remember getting marks from the seat belt that would cause really bad bruises the next day from the car flipping over we were young and out for adventure plus it was. Way away from regular traffic In a dedicated area for 4 wheeling and off-roading activity. I also had a Jeep and Honda 3 wheelers to play with now most of us are older but still remain freinds and we just shake our heads. At some of the nutty things we did when we were young

I had three beetles while at school...in the winter they were cold...heaters were not always reliable..but with a good set of snow tires...al you needed to do was put it second gear...rev it and ease out the clutch and it would go through snow really well...fun, fun, fun.

Roadking2002 bugs are great in the snow! RWD with all the weight in the back. Only way a RWD car would work in snow. I’ve testet my bugs limits a few times over here :-) great winter car

I bought wheel adapters from JCWhitney for my 58 bug when I was 15. Took the snow tires off my mom's Olds Cutlass and they worked perfect! I could go anywhere. And when the folks found out. They used the bug quite a bit in the snow. Fun in mud too!

Many years with a '68 beetle. Loved the snow. Could get out when everyone else was stuck. Of course, first you had to figure out which was the beetle, as they were first to get covered! Skinny tires, and maybe one chain, go anywhere!

In N.Y. with my 66 volks, 1300cc...I used to leave a dark undercarriage dirt trail in the snow...plowing snow...those 5.60-15 tires..THIN truck tires bit good and gave elevation. I was the only one driving before the snow plow went thru....i always wondered what he thought came thru there before him. The hardest part was knowing where the road was...no markers...all 14" of soft snow covering up details

Brought back great memory's of playing in snow , but we cheated= ran a pair of cut down log truck chains, the only draw back is no running on hard surface, unless you want to shake the bug apart LOL We went where a few would not dare to go , bug was light and the new snow was easy to push not wet , had snow packed all up in bumper and around head lights, good times !

My dad had a VW Beetle and he said it did well in the snow due to the engine being over the drive wheels. Put tire chains on it and I'm sure it would out-do most modern AWD's on ice.

Jason, Back in the late 60's my father would have my brother and me sit in the back of his 66 to drive about 1/2 mile to a convenience store to get bread, milk etc. the triangle field at the end of our street usually had the snow blow from it to our street so it was about 8 to 12 inches of snow! His Beetle had the bias ply Continental tires, no snows, and he would easily get through it. My brother and I gave him the extra weight for traction! 50 plus years ago!

Put some SxS atv tires such as the proven BFG All Terrain TKO's on the back and that thing will travel any 5 inch snow. Seriously it did ok for what it is. Not like you can get tire speed out of it. I daily driver a 1950 Ford 2dr sedan with a flathead V8 and 6v electric system and live in Detroit so I know the pain. Dad used to do it back in the day so we can still do it now with a solid 45-80 hp and rear wheel drive.

I don't know Jason that might be bug abuse. 🤣🤣 I had an old six volt 66 I used to drive in the winter and it would always start even at 25 below zero and with good snow tires that darn thing would go just about anywhere. And with a properly maintained heating system they really aren't that bad as far as heat and defrost goes. Great video 😁👍

5" is NOT a challenge for a BUG. Put on a pair of snows on the rear and Run that sucker until it skids up on top the snow. About 10 inches should do it. I drove a 66 in Nothern Michigan In 66. Never let me down. It is a pain in the ass though to keep scraping the frost off the inside of the windshield as you drive. A snow shovel fits under hood nicely.

'67 had 53 hp, '66 had 50, back when we had our '60 sunroof sedan in the early seventies (with the mighty 36 hp engine lol) I used to know a lot of the differences between different years,I shared your videos of the '58 with a friend who has a fixed up '56 oval window.

How do I get a key chain? When I was younger, our VW's were daily drivers. Many a fun time in the snow. My buddies '67 bus had a hole in the floor and the rear seat would fill with snow from it being kicked off of the tire.

ummm, a turn , uphill , grass and no snow tires( shit tires too ) ....also I didn't have much momentum as I had to really slow for the turn because if my front end pushed I would be in the rock wall.
