Happy New Year everyone. It's been a while since my last video post, becuase I've been really busy on Hab 2.0 design. Not much fun looking at me work in Solidworks or Cameo Systems modeler so I've been reluctant to build too many videos. Apologies for that...but, this year is going to be awesome...it just hasn't started out that way.
In this video we'll go over a major failure caused by weather. It's a setback for sure, but I think in the end, God has a plan for all of this...and it's really...good. Stay tuned to find out more and while this setback is painful, I think it's all going to work out in the end. In a very, very good way.

Reach out to the manufacturer, maybe they will want to send some engineers and look or otherwise collect the failure pieces to learn how to reinforce their structure better for others with same structure. Please do a go fund me when you have some budget plan for hab 2.

I'm a scrapper with my occupation. Run some new support system and leave everything intact. Nothing going to fall on you. Have to suck it up and rig alternatives. That's how you survive. Plan B is not starting over. Plan B is modifying plan A. Survival. God bless. PS the heater is fine. :)

the only and best greenhouse system would be one of glass and steel framed, with a steel roof as a snow shelter above it, faced towards the winter sun, also walipini , half underground , will give you the free energy of the ground and placing a wood stove will allow you to continue to grow all winter long ....good luck we are all in the same boat

WOW ! I was always worried about snow loads, but I never expected this. Well, as bad as it is, it's still possible to stuff some insulation into rips in the covering and to prevent everything inside from being ruined. Then you could empty the contents when the weather is better. You have my sympathies, Jeff. This is indeed a nasty blow.

I had a hoophouse up in VA that got decimated like that under an ice storm followed by 7" of snow. I stayed out there all night with a push broom pushing up the ceiling and knocking that stuff off. I also had two woodburning stoves in there, hoping to keep it warm enough that the ice would melt and let it slide off....nah, it was just too cold.

Try to look at it as a nudge to get you to move in another better direction. When my wife died I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of her personal things. I eventually boxed everything up but stored everything in the basement still unable to decide to what to do. While I’m trying to decide my basement flooded first time it ever happened. Everything in the basement was ruined. That made me have to finally dispose of everything and move on.

I am sure God has a plan. You have attempted things others have not and I am sure have learned more that words or videos will ever say. I hope that the building MFG will stand behind their product and make it right with you financially. I am sure inventors over the centuries have had many failures before they were successful. That was sad to watch. It amazes me how some people can be so harsh. Why is it so easy for some to push you down when it costs nothing to offer words of encouragement. It amazes me when people say global warming doesn't exist because they see cold weather and heavy snow like this. The truth is that global warming causes weather extremes. I think there is a lot of salvage that can be done on bldg and eqpt. What doesn't kills us makes us stronger and certainly wiser. All the best in the recovery.

Snow load calculations take into effect the worst possible combinations. It looks like the snow on one side slid off while the other side stuck. This put uneven forces on the structure making it shift, and once one of the beams broke, the rest couldn't hold on. In areas with high snow loads, it is important to have a high pitched roof so they clear themselves. Semi-temporary structures like this one should have the fabric treated with teflon, oil or some sort of lubricant each year to keep the snow from sticking.

It almost looks like the insulation help to keep the snow on the roof. My guess is when it was heated the snow would have been more likely to slide earlier. I'm going to say a polycarbonate Greenhouse on a smaller scale might be a better more affordable scalable experiment

I was thinking the same thing. the roof insulation prevented the snow from melting and sliding off.

@@donaldfafard yeah that's kind of what I was thinking the insulation did the reverse it probably had just enough liquid underneath it when the temperature dropped that it froze to the roof and was unable to slide after that. So if the insulation would have been taken down for the winter the building probably would have been okay but removing all that insulation would have been a lot of work to put it all back up again so I can't say that this was something that he could have foreseen plus the Monumental snowfall on top of the building performing without any problems in Prior years he probably just never had the thought that the snow would freeze the roof it is an unfortunate setback. I know here in Canada you might have a chance of having insurance cover the cost of erecting another building because of the unusual event of snow but my limited understanding of insurance down in the United States is that you have to add certain buildings to your policy and that will cost you more

I agree regarding the insulation but I think it was the fact that you have only one side insulated all the way up. I think you got a a load imbalance on one side. Sorry for your loss. I really hope your not making payments.

I guess you should put some construction poles under the broken galvanized beams, just to save your investment, or part of it. I also think that the snow on the side is taking care of the structure from collapse. So better get that snow from that roof as soon as the storm strikes again. And don't think about god's plan, think about your plan, because eventually your plan will be god's plan. Courage, we all are with you.

My concerns at this point are 1. Propane shut off. 2. Propane plumbing disconnected so it doesn't rupture or damage the tank if the building comes down. 3. Figure out how the new roofline is going to impact snow load, and mitigate. It might be best to cut or roll back the skin so that new snow just passes through instead of building on the roof. 4. Try to get some support under the heater. This might be salvageable, but you need to mitigate the immediate threats as best you can. God bless, Brother.

that big racking will support the weight of the snow load and other stuff, its where the racks are missing is where the stuff is super vulnerable. electronics etc. when you rebuild make a steep roof line. almost A frame. with the grand solar minimum coming, the steep roof will be beneficial to shed snow load. really beef up the structure.

Maybe time for a geothermal greenhouse with a wood structure...I know Oppenheimer Ranch Project has some designs...but they should stay standing in snow better. I think this is good for everyone to see as we go into the grand solar minimum more.

I had the same thing happened to me about 4 years ago when the polar vortex came through. I should have stayed on top of it with a snow rake too keep the snow off

Hab 2.0- look at some of the in ground designs. Will help with the winter using less heat, and with less structure exposed you can build it to support more weight. Hate to tell you but the way the "atmospheric river" to California has set up just south of the low pressure off the Pacific NW coast, you're in for more snow.

Your roof snow load for your area is 109 psf. Looks like the south side frame of the structure is salvageable. The bolts on that side sheered off. I think the south side shed the snow better as it’s the solar side. For now if you can let the tent loose to fall in it will take the load off the structure to help salvage latter this year. I have a summer place close to you so would like to stop by later this year. Take care and be careful.

TRM ..... hopefully, you will be able to re-purpose anything that does not sell. You still have a TON of steel, fabric, flooring, shelving etc that is useful. As you stated ... this is a very real learning experience. Heck, maybe even diagnose the reasons for the failure, design the necessary structure improvements and sell the design to the manufacturer of the structure? I expect to see this structure completely gutted once the snow melts. Hab 2 should be stronger and have less wasted space. The digester could be returned to service once the building had been removed.

Divide and conquer... Divide by function. Smaller separated domes. Cut your energy needs by separating. Fish area, work area, storage area does not need the same energy demands (climate control/sun) as the the plants. You might be able to halve your energy needs by separating the plants.

My $.02... take what you’ve learned and put it into a shipping container. Much more solid, easier to maintain temperature during the winter and closer to your final product. Call it the next phase if you will. I feel like stepping back from this full scale production size project will be good. Bring things down to a smaller scale and see if you can get things going from there. Once spring comes you can put a shed over your digester and keep it going. We’re all here to support you however we can given our varying ability to give. Wether it been spiritual, mental, physical or financial. Keep on trucking Brother. We’ve got your back!

as far as structural thinking.. steel shelving is extremely strong.. I would use the shelves to double as structural components. I'm in Japan and have had to reconstruct a very large old traditional house.. and I've had to do a lot of doubling my components... thinking in multi-use .. .. I'm 1 guy .. limited resource .. .. anyway, just think if you had run some connective spokes from the steel shelves to the roof arches.. man! good luck.. we all need it.

Good evening TRM. I suggest that since the side that has collapsed is already "resting" on the racking. Maybe see if you can tie what is left of the roof structure to the racking to hopefully keep it from falling further down. It looks to already have penetrated the roof membrane. So you can maybe keep it from going further and support it so you can at least be in there with a little more confidence it won't crash down on you. Sorry about the loss, Jeff. Not to sound like Captain Obvious BUT, The best thing to do: Salvage, salvage, salvage and recycle, recycle, recycle, then science the crap out of the design. After all, NASA is known for innovation. In the words of the 6-million Dollar Man. “Gentleman, we can rebuild him. We have the technology.” I would go through all the warranties and cash them in. Specifically the tent’s. Looking at the video, Anyone can see why there was structure failure. There was not enough crossbeam support to be able to handle that much stress and weight on the ceiling. You have bars going East to West, but hardly any going North and South to balance out the weight. I would also venture a guess that the bolts used were not regulated for strength either. This explains why the structural beams were popping their bolts the way they were. If you find one of the bolts, check to see the ID # or markings on the head. You should still be able to recover the 4K heater since it is not on the side that has the most damage. You will have to set up a rope pulley system. You should ask Wranglerstar for help using his tractor. Of course, since the tractor cannot get in the tent you should still be able to lower the heater using the ropes attached outside since it is close to the entrance. While the heavily damage portion of the roof is still on the shelving, I would pull the dehumidifier also using ropes tied to the lower portion. I don’t see if it will tug or pull on anything from the collapsed portion by scooting it out. Hope things will work out eventually for reconstruction and recovery.

Ground Control to TRM, Jeff Hab 1 failure looks to be due to multiple reasons. The skin could be the issue, the previous one never allowed the snow to build up. Is the new one the same material? You always had heating running which would help melt the snow making the skin slippery allowing the snow to slide. Does the insulation help cause the snow to build up as it’s a colder surface? How are the fish? Remember in Martian the hab got damaged but Mark Watney carried on. You got this this TRM, Ground Control out

So sorry for your temporary setback. Have you looked into walapini greenhouse designs? With the grand solar minimum you should expect as much or more snow in the coming years. The walapini design, with active heated double poly cover, can use geothermal energy at a fraction of the running cost. Keep the space between the two poly panels positively pressured with geothermal heating to ensure fast melting as well as increased insulation effect. Curtis Stone uses a similar double poly pressure insulation method. In addition to geothermal energy, you could use a rocket stove mass heater combined with a radiant heat system (wrapped around the barrel) and a boiler (on the barrel) powered Tesla steam turbine. Alternatively, you can run composting inside the greenhouse and capture the exothermic energy with a boost to CO2 for your plants. I cannot speak to God's plan, but I know the depths of truth to the saying, "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Research the grand solar minimum and the Maunder minimum. It is a cycle and we're about to see tribulations that many will compare to The Revelation.

Have you considered going down, instead of up? The walls would no longer become an issue, and the footprint is far wider than it would be deep to provide safety from any collapse or issues. It would also be much easier to incorporate a roof like : |\ with a sheer pitch or a 30 - 45 degree (/\) pitch to shed the snow easily, while being anchored directly to the ground. I dunno. All I can think of is to try to work with nature. My condolences

Send them the link to this video and let them see the failure points. I hope you and the misses continue to do this as it is a neat concept and has potential. I think smene mentioned already. If the skin is comprised in nine area can you not cut and pull it off? It would keep it from collapsing all the way?

Have you looked into geothermal greenhouses? That's my plan. Gotta stick with the true arch roof. I've seen where the heat in the greenhouse is also used to heat the home. It's been a few years since I saw that, I'll try to find the link.

Luctor et emergo. My flimsy first greenhouse was destroyed by a gale. My new one is more sturdy and more based on passive solar greenhouse designs. Thermal mass and daylight hours are my limits. Without heating and artificial lighting I will need to grow my veggies in fall and keep them alive during winter. I don't understand why you used a surface greenhouse, what you need is a cellar, to mimic martian conditions. Your solar panels have an angle that does not look optimal for winter and snow load. Lot's of design issues. I have them also and keep tweeking and tinkering on. Best wishes, you will get there, greetings from Holland.
