Right? Sure she gets scared a lot but she pushes through her fears. She has an entire song about overcoming her fears with a smile and song! That scene where the witch approaches her, you can completely see the fear and uncertainty in her face and body language but in spite of her discomfort around the stranger, she shows the elderly old woman compassion. It's kind of offensive that she's described as lacking personality and has "nothing going on up there" just because her manner of expression is more subtle. I feel the same way about Cinderella, she has a personality if you watch her. Maybe the two of them need and entire song to explain to the audience that they're compassionate and strong internally rather than externally...or you know...maybe they can just do what they do and show, not tell.

it is clear that the designs of the modern characters are much more expressive, and this is good but I simply prefer a more realistic characterization , I know that it is not so expressive but for me it brings a greater sense of charm and artistic, while the designs of Rapunzel and Ariel benefit from exaggeration and cartoony, the designs of Snow White and Cinderella benefit from softness and subtlety, it's good in a different way, I find it so pleasant to look at (I consider the scene of Cinderella and the prince dancing as one of Disney's greatest artistic prowess), I would like Disney animators today to still maintain that style of animation in their characters.

She offers her only skills to the dwarfs in exchange for it which is a smart move. Even though SHE’S the guest Snow White runs that household like a boss. Snow White might be a simple character but a dynamic one. She's sugar sweet adorable motherly, kind and naïve princess who dreams of happiness because her life is dog shit. Yes she's passive and doesn't learn anything but that's really because it's a passive role, and she doesn't need to change. The whole point of the fairy tale is that despite the fact that there are two beautiful women, one gets what she wants because of her humility and kindness while the other was so concerned over vanity and superfluous wants (youth, beauty, "whiteness" believe it or not) that it consumed her to a degree that she ended up destroying herself. I understand it's not for everyone but honestly I prefer Snow White over the Mary-Sue misunderstood outcast that you can relate to and loose nothing like with Mulan and Elsa (even though I like those movies).

Goddess of Spring looks pretty outrageous now but you have to remember that at the time animation was still pretty new and no one had attempted to animate more realistic human form before. These days animators have the benefit of decades of development to learn from. The artists working on Goddess of Spring were literally inventing "realistic" animation and I think it's unfair to be so dismissive of it. In addition the "operatic voices" that you sarcastically mention wasn't too far off from the singing style that would have been on the radio at the time. Lets not be so dismissive of something that was actually pretty groundbreaking for its time.

Snowy, Cindy and Aurora are the best drawn and lovable fairy tale characters. The modern princesses with their big eyes and their overemancipated behaviour are not for me. BUT, I would pannik as much as her if I was alone in the forest, and had no idea what I just touched me or starred at me. I would probably be scared of the dwarves too, If I expected to see lil kids, and found out I'm in the house of some adult men. And if the old lady was so insistent I would agree to bite into the apple to get rid of her, plus, it did look nice, she couldn't have known. She never waited for the prince to rescue her, she was hiding from her abuser, working with her royal little hands to thank the complete strangers that were helping her. She has a mom-like personality. The prince just happened to find her again, and they were already in love anyway.

Snow White is different from the rest, because she was the first, and she is from the lost generation era. I.e. product of her times. Lets look into the 1930s... The Great Depression, follow by WW2. Those were tough times, so Disney created a character that gave hope, positive energy and sense of overcoming tough times. Snow White had a rough childhood despite being royalty. She didn't have a sense of entitlement, but had dreams being being swept away by a prince to live happily ever after. This is why most movies in the 1930s convey of fantasy, comedy and romance with very little obnoxious drama that would make people who are actually struggling with rough times roll their eyes. Movies in the 1930s and 40s were made to keep peoples' mind off The Great Depression and WW2... giving them hope that things will get better and they can overcome the hardships. Snow White is a product of her times. An embodiment in animated form of The Lost Generation. She is actually the strongest Disney princess ever! She isn't entitled like Ariel, isn't irresponsible and selfish like Elsa, didn't have a whole family like Merida and Mulan, didn't grew up with friends like Tiana, the list goes on, and yet she got her dream come true despite her horrible upbringing, having to face the envy of her stepmother, and running away to live in a house with strange little men, etc. She is a Disney princess that pulled herself up by her own bootstraps. A no nonsense princess that has to face the brighter side of life , because so much has been thrown at her.

I absolutely love the quote from Walt Disney at the end of the video. “Everybody in the world was once a child. So in planning a new picture, we don't think of grown-ups, and we don't think of children, but just of that fine, clean, unspoiled spot down deep in every one of us that maybe the world has made us forget and that maybe our pictures can help recall.” I think Disney as a company and a brand has forgotten about what makes them so beloved in the first place... or rather, they're just taking the most economic advantage of their roots nowadays. They either dig up old relics (in this case, movies) that spark that kind of feeling in their now-adult audience from what used to be their childhood through reboots or remakes, or purposely engineer a new movie that's catered for their current target audience (usually children) in a specific demographic and time that wouldn't be as timeless if you revisit in a few years.

For exampel, Snow White is completely selfless, she lacks every inch of selfishness by giving her talents throughout the whole movie. She is innocent and doesn't think wrong of people. She was always ready to help because she had a kind heart. She kept her kindness even when her life was miserable, she lacked a family and love, yet she always chose to love and not keep hate toward the people who hurt her or try to kill her. And Aurora deserves a break: everything she's ever known was flipped on it's head. Not to do with Disney per se but Snow White was way more messed up before the Grimm Brothers censored it somewhat. Originally it was her mother, not her stepmother, who is trying to kill her, and the prince is acknowledged as a straight up creeper for the whole coffin thing. It's really a story about how a girl can no longer trust anyone as her mother keeps coming in disguise to try and poison her but yet the silly girl falls for it 3 times **facepalm** Made me laugh when you said 'She's scared of everything but the scariest face in the movie' because it kind of mirrors how she SHOULD be suspicious of anyone at her door but isn't.

Snow White is ( by appearance looking ) is the Youngest Disney princes out of the princess line ( Alice doesn’t count as a princess) She’s supposedly 14 so she literally a kid or a early teenager kicked out from her home. So her having that many scared expression does fit. Now Betty Boop on the other hand.... yeah she 14 as well.

@@FridayNightSleepover Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahantas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Anna and Elsa (I know they're not part of the official line up but these ladies deserve to be mentioned) and Moana. Plus, maybe you could stomp your foot down and talk about Ariel because she is one of my favorite characters but she has been having criticism that's driving me nuts that's making me believe that she is badly written, weak, and unlikable. Also, I have something in mind, should we judge the Disney Princesses as role models? (If you ask me, they should be judged for who they are as characters not role models because even some of the most well written characters aren't the best role models either (like Batman or Spongebob). These movies they originate from are from movies that are meant to enchant and entertain, not teach and educate and when you're making a movie that's supposed to entertain, the most important factor is the writing, the characters, and the story. So, judging the princesses as role models is kinda like barking up the wrong tree). So, they should be judged for who they are as characters, not role models.

@@jonnyboy4289 I've watched the first movie a million times, she's fascinated by the human world and falls in love with Eric because he's a human. The second movie was horrible. The third movie was ok. I've never wached anything else, I don't remember anything else. But I get annoyed seeing her in mermaid form since she wanted to be human so maybe I blocked out any shows.

I think the main reason people think of Snow White as bland (although she's one of my favourites) is because her story happened to her rather than with her, literally every other character decided for her. She didn't have much of an active role in her own story and I think it's a narrative problem, rather than character problem. But she definitely has personality; she's optimistic, joyful, hard-working, she's a dreamer, we can see in the way she manages dwarfs and animals that she's a natural leader (but in cinema if you're not leading people to war, you're apparently not a leader). She shares a lot with Ariel (they both are dreamers who want a man, share passion for music and trust an obvious villain lady), and yet only Snow White is ridiculed for her choices, even though she's younger and her upbringing was much more tragic.

Another video where I learned much more than I expected! Loved the insight on rotoscoping here - I've wondered before why movies like Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings get flack for their rotoscoping when Disney has used it without many people commenting on it. Now I get that there is a whole spectrum of artistic decisions that can be made while rotoscoping, with varying results. I look forward to future videos!!

Honestly I want her optimism and perseverance. She isn't whiny and actually gets shit done on her own, and she didn't even need someone to give her a pep talk which is so common in characters these days! She's traumatized for sure but she gets through it with her own hard work. She is the strongest disney princess. They really made Wreck it Ralph 2's "snow white" shallow, dumb, and completely invalidated the original's struggles. The new Disney's trying so hard to be woke yet they can't even see past their own prejudices.

Great video. Now you have shown the design similarities between her and Betty Boop it really made it click for me why she was designed the way she was. I also remember reading that the female colouring artists used their own blusher on her cheeks, and the male artists were incredulous about how they could get it in the right spot ever time. They would say 'how do you think we do it on ourselves?'

Strait off the bat, let's analyse that first sentence. Ariel sold her voice to a sea witch so she could be with a guy. Snow was told there was a hit on her and decided to act as a maid to a bunch of seven dwarves without ever complaining about it. Like....honestly, Snow seems sound AF to be around.

She was 14! She was pretty young. I don't think she was "unrealistic" per se. She showed kindness and bravery even though she had been through so much (and only at 14). While that is RARE, it is not completely unrealistic. I've met people like that. I think it was a good example of being brave and kind regardless of your circumstances (a good lesson for everyone, not just people in that time and day nor just little girls who watch the movie). So, while she today may come off as weak, she is not weak; kindness is not weakness. Anyway, that's just a little part of my spiel. Good video, nonetheless!
