Good review. This is my favorite film of all time & the most mature animated film I think I’ve ever seen. Pure class! There isn’t a second I can’t take anything seriously. The Queen is on another level & being inspired by German Expressionist horror makes me love her even more.

I just finished watching this a couple days ago. I really enjoyed it. It's a straightforward story, as one would expect from a fairy tale, and it's expertly told through amazing animation. There's so much detail that breathes life into it. One thing that stood out to me are the shadows of the dwarfs inside the cottage. I agree -- the water was amazing. All the background scenery is amazing. My favorite scene is when the huntsman refuses to kill Snow White. Not because of the animation (though it was amazing), but because I appreciate the premise of refusing to follow orders if they are wrong. Even if the cost is great. I'm sure he was severely reprimanded, or had to quit and go into hiding, as a result. It's a great example of how classic movies reinforced proper behavior. I read up on some of the brouhaha regarding the remake. Wow. I can see why you were put off by that. This is why we want a strong studio system, so that actors can't get too much power and make decisions for an audience. It would be like a chef deciding what people should eat in a restaurant. The owner should decide that, because they need to please as many people as possible to keep the doors open. That's reality. I'm not saying that actors are influencing executives in this case, but if the executives aren't pleasing enough people with their decisions here, they will feel it in their pocket books. I think they already are. Good storytelling, to me, is all about reinforcing what makes people good. Love, as corny as it may sound to some, is at the very heart of that. I think the comments by Rachel Zegler, about being a leader, are completely off base. Being a leader is more important than love? This is why I love The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1932) so much. It tackles this theme head on, and it's clear what General Yen thinks is more important between love and leadership. Hint: It ain't leadership. If they think a story that focuses on leadership over love will be a big hit, all I can say is, good luck with that. All of the comments by the actress are derogatory. I've heard the whole "stalker" stuff before regarding other classic movies. As if he would have continued pursuing her if she asked him not to. Had he done that, then yes, he would be a stalker. But that's not what's happening here. What's wrong with pursuing somebody? She's young and hasn't thought this through. It almost appears as if they're looking to be offended. They see what they want to see -- not what's actually in front of them. The whole dwarf thing is ridiculous. Who in their right mind thinks the dwarfs are bad people? They're colorful characters, for sure, but there's nothing demeaning in the way they're portrayed. They're the heroes of the story. What's not to like about that? Is it because one is dim-witted? What's wrong with being a little slow? Being a good person is what counts. By the way, I just watched an interesting video on KZbin about this where David Hand speaks out. Thank you for such a long and thought out post, you nailed everything on the head! I even read your post out loud to my parents and they loved what you had to say. Also, I appreciate you trusting me on watching this film...I know it sort of takes a lot to dedicate 80 minutes of your day to watching a film, and I appreciate you watching "Snow White" and letting me know your thoughts on it. I'm not surprised you enjoyed it!

@@ianpatrickclassicreviews Thanks for the kind reply. I had to reread my post to make sure I didn't ramble too much, as I sometimes do. 🤣 Watching it was a pleasure. I'll literally watch any movie from 1937. For me, 1937 to 1939 is the sweet spot for classic Hollywood.

Great review and some interesting insight. I've never seen this, but you have me very curious. Adding it to my list. 👍 The largest number of my favorite movies is from 1937. It was a great year. I try to keep an open mind about modern movies, but sadly, it doesn't surprise me that a modern version would fall short. Their goal should be to capture the magic that the original has. I'm not against modernizing it, if they feel they have to, but that should just be a cosmetic change. The fundamental story elements that make it work should be recognized and left in tact. Especially with something this renowned. That's my 2 cents.

There were a lot of great films that year! I have a feeling you are going to love this movie. I'm excited to see your thoughts on it, too. After watching it, you should see what the people behind making the "modernized" version are saying about this classic masterpiece.
