In this video I head to the top of Blackcomb mountain to snowboard down a double black diamond run. I've got 3 tips that will help you to survive snowboarding on sketchy steep runs like this. The first tip is to stay on your edges at all times while on steep runs. The edge that I prefer to stay on for the steepest parts is my toe edge. The second tip is to make quick turns with your whole body. Making quick turns on your snowboard will keep you in control and stop you from picking up too much speed. The final tip is to make sure you're snowboarding with a balanced body position. This means riding with your knees bent and back straight. Plus keeping your back hand over the tail of your snowboard on toe turns. I hope these three tips will help you survive double black diamond runs on your snowboard! This video was filmed on the Couloir Extreme in Whistler, B.C.

I remember the first time I went down a single black diamond, we didn't know what we where getting into. When we got to the top we were both scared shitless the hill was almost flat and my friend was freaking out saying we're gonna die (also joking with humor) then a skiier flew past us and down like a pro (by the way I snowboard my friends skis) and then I was like.... see Ryan it can't be that bad so we made are way down, can't see shit! Then we had to hit a danger cliff the only other way down was to the right which got steeper so then I looked and the cliff was like only 10' so I slid on my ass off into the void of white hoping not to have a giant rock go up my ass and finally something good happens... I land on two feet of fresh un-touched powder so then I'm sitting there yelling for Ryan to come down come to find out 1) he could barely hear me. 2) he lost his skis under the powder... I'm sitting there thinking.... well... shit! We're amateurs... 30 minutes later he found the skis and came down then we made are way on down it was like we were on Everest (keep in mind we're on mt hood in Oregon) we made are way half way and what do you know? Another thing goes wrong... Ryan's skis are two loose so he has to slide his ass down the hill and it's like 6:00pm starting to get dark and we made it down to the lift and it was freaking 7:00 there was lights tho... thank god!!

I use the black diamonds at my local ski resort whenever the blue squares get choked up with newbies that don't listen to the rules. Black diamonds aren't even that bad honestly they are steep but if you can bomb down a blue square you can do a black diamonds. Also it's not a bad idea to educate yourself before stepping it up a notch if you are a solo rider who doesn't have people to advise you.

How are you now 3 years later? I'm more or less in the same boat. Just had my 4th day boarding today. 3 of those days were self taught with all the good tips on channels like this one and only on my 3rd day did I have a friend help me (pretty much the only advice she had was to just keep the knees more bent, keep the back straight and trust going at faster and faster speeds). I'm getting reasonably confident on blues and can pretty well bomb down greens now.

Great video! The only thing I can add to this video is to REALLY watch where you're going. If unsure, follow the most tracked-out area. On the expert runs, it's assumed that you know how to read the terrain and the fall line may well take you over a cliff! In other words, straight down and the easiest-looking way may not even be a line. Good stuff and see you next Winter!

I read another tip is when initiating those sharp control turns, lean on your front foot. It seems like dodgy advice, but it allows you to swing your back foot around a lot faster so less time is spent with your board facing straight down the hill.

You're so lucky to be located close to such an amazing resort, my resort always is full ice and there's no terrain park so I have to travel for like 4 hours to get a decent day of snowboarding in. Nice video though, I admire how you can snowboard so good yet still have amazing footage. I have tried filming myself with a pole, but I just can't get my weight around fast enough to do anything filming worthy.

@Ghlowy
@Ghlowy 8 жыл бұрын
The way I did my progression was before I tried black runs I was able to confidently straight line down blues and carve on them easily. When I started blacks I went back to the basics and did the falling leaf before trying to carve. Now that I can confidently carve down blacks I'm doing the falling leaf on double blacks before attempting to carve.

Well, if you guys want a challenge, go to Montage mountain in Pennsylvania. The double black there is a really good way to learn how to seem because it's steep all the way down and almost like u can't do it if it is icy. Look up grooming white lightning at Montage mountain.

@ONSEN BEATS no video? Also just because you claim you can doesn't mean he should suggest people who are moving up from black diamonds should just bomb a double black... With his video being like this he doesn't need a disclaimer as long as people follow his directions and can already handle a black diamond they would be fine (probably).

The key to runs like this is being able to maintain your confidence and not let fear overwhelm you. It is actually easier to turn a snowboard on steeper terrain. If you can control your fear and concentrate on using the same technique you learned on blues and single blacks, you will be fine.

Then, one season, during camp, our insane (like, guy is nuts) instructor took us on a black run (~double diamond in the US), ice and rocks and all, for _the first run._ Like, no nice blue, nope. It was... fun. Interesting, and fun :D. Everyone came out fine.

The only problem with this video is that on double blacks and blacks the point is is to have speed. Anyone can slide down the side of a mountain on the edge of their board. What most people can’t do is actually go down the mountain with immense speed. In my opinion that’s what makes them fun.

Hey Kevin! I started snowboarding about a month ago and can do all the trails at my local ski area. recently, I've started to do bigger jumps. I can do smaller jumps or big jumps with little speed, so I've decided to go to the bigger jumps. these big jumps are right under the chairlift. I fall every Time I try, but that's not the issue. a lot of kids on the chairlift were teasing me for not being able to do the jumps. this has ruined my confidence and at the end of the day I found myself telling myself that I wasn't a "park person". any tips to get over his?

+CallumsHDGaming Wind up by turning your upper body first in the direction you want to turn, unweight your back foot all the way, and whip your back leg around your front leg. A little hop from your front foot helps too.

+MrFaj0n +Rachyl Perrotta Oh I must have missed it then ill have a look. Thank you Rachyl ill give that a go next time, I am quite new to it as well at the moment I can only really do turns by putting the board flat straight down the hill then switching edge.

+Rachyl Perrotta Yep, this. And here I thought I was just making that method up. I guess that's the right way to do it.

+CallumsHDGaming It does take practice! Bend your knees more than you think you have to, make the action of weighting/unweighting more exaggerated to get the feel of it. You can practice this in your living room too. Strap the board on, wind up, and do a buttery spin on the carpet. :)

+CallumsHDGaming Practice Practice and more. Remember, once you get comfortable dont be lazey when doing harder runs. Use your whole body, all or nothing and dont bail.

Omy God I thought you were in sunshine I was on a double black there and I was literally in the forest with cliffs felt more like a cradrupal black. Lol

Hey Kevin, good tips but runs like that seem a bit pointless and less fun if you are stuck on an edge. I would avoid that kind of run unless it was a route to better terrain.
