That is a lift, tag, or drop axle. It's purpose is to spread out the weight of really heavy loads. When you're not hauling something heavy, or when you need to make a sharp turn, it can be retracted up into the metal housing above. These types of axles are usually pneumatic. This truck could be fixed by adding lift/lower axle to the advanced options menu. It should have been done by the devs before release. The axle is there due to realism so they should make it function like a real one.

Haha thanks man I have no idea where dolly axle came from although I think it might be an English nickname for them!? Yeah they need to add something to either remove it or the option to lift it into its housing like you say! It’s a really good truck but so many times that stupid axle ruins it! I seen a video of one on here in real life of the army towing a tank and even they had just removed it entirely so even though it’s supposed to spread the weight, even the army were clearly sick of it and just removed it completely! I can see why it’s replacement had all live axles with power going to them! It’s a nice idea but if it’s that important to the truck then they should just make it a proper axle! If they sort this out it will go way up in my favourite truck list! I’m sure someone would have modded it out on PC by now!

Btw dolly axle is a pretty good description of the front axle or axles on the smaller trailers in the game. The ones that steer up front I mean.

Steven Harvley yeah it’s a real shame, I can definitely feel a good truck in there somewhere that shines all over the place until the angle of ground changes and that wheel hits first which is way too often on a game like this! But mods are coming to console so we’ll get a chance to drive it without that axle one way or another! Yeah true maybe that’s where I’ve heard it from? I’m sure I’ve heard the term dolly axle before but I kinda got it from the depths of my brain mid sentence and stuck with it lol! I’ve definitely heard the ones you mention like drop axle etc!

The biggest downside of this truck, in my opinion, is the lack of Diff lock and that's why I've sell it after a couple of failed deliveries... Sometimes Diff lock is better then AWD :)

Yeah this truck would certainly benefit from a diff lock! Especially with those stupid wheels in the middle lifting the back up so much, at least all wheels would rotate together instead of the back set going flat out with no weight on them! I’ve sadly not used it much either which is a shame as it’s a good truck otherwise! Yeah diff lock is a life saver lol! Even the western star twin steer is saved from being completely terrible by having a diff lock for the rear wheels!

Honestly if that big winch platform wasn't sitting over those wheels they wouldn't be as big of a problem they still would be a problem, but not as bad as they could move out of the way. Also they could've made it a powered axle instead of a drag axle since it's an unlicensed truck.

Yeah I think you’re right dude! There’s such little flex in that axle and nowhere for it to go so it’s always right where you don’t want it! True a powered axle would be nice! I guess you could sell it and get the other Derry that basically has that axle as a powered axle! But even the option to remove it would be fine! I looked on KZbin and if you type OSHKOSH M911 in then loads pop up and one of the top videos is the army towing a tank and even they’ve just removed that axle so even the military are probably sick of it lol! And most likely why it’s replacement had all axles powered!

Yeah I agree though dude I’m sure the off-road box does better in that situation, I’m just a sucker for the speed of highrange lol! I’d rather make up time on the quick bits and suffer the slower bits lol! But yeah this truck sadly is ruined by that silly axle! Mods will soon remove it though when they arrive for console 👍🏻!

Love the "Pre-order" Steering Quote :) It's a real shame about that 2nd axle. I think it's actually powered on the real-life equivalent and designed to take the stress of the rear axle. Still a nice looking truck though

Haha yeah it’s not the most responsive steering rack lol! Yeah it is a real shame! Im not sure there’s possibly a conversion kit or maybe some did come with power to all wheels, but the trucks real name is the OSHKOSH M911 and looking on KZbin, they all either have that axle lifted off the ground, or this video from OSHKOSH kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGnXZGyNadRoias (only about 45 seconds long) they’ve just removed it all together and that’s even with towing a tank so it appears even the army are sick of it lol! Perhaps that’s why the other Derry in the game (called the OSHKOSH M1070 in real life) that basically replaced this one, came with the same wheel set up but all axles are powered this time which if this truck had that axle removed or had power it would be a bloody great truck!

While the additional wheel is bad it does not matter once you got a heavy load on the saddle, since then your rear wheels stay on the ground despite it. I think its pretty usefull since it prevents the sinking the truck in in soft mud. So while its bad offroading you cant offroad that much with heavy cargo anyway and it is good with heavy cargs. Certainly no scout, but when loaded down it pulls like a boss. Doesnt do to good with towed trailers, but with saddle trailers its great. Completly stock when you find it, nothing on it.

Yeah I bet the weight of a nice big trailer would help in some situations! The problem with that axle though that I find in mud too, is that the extra effort needed to force that axle to wade through, outweighs what you’d gain from it spreading the weight as you end up wheel spinning and digging in while trying to push it through! I’d love the option to just remove it because then, it would be up there as one of my favourite trucks, I love it’s power and speed and even up the mountain it was fine with the hill and snow etc, just that axle caught a bump and that’s it! Way too many times it becomes the thing that stops you! The truck itself is a monster! I hope mods will soon remove it and then I’ll use it a lot more I reckon 👍🏻

I think in real life the extra set of wheels can retract into the metal thing above them and they only put them down to support extra heavy loads. I’ve seen some dump trucks with something similar.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense dude! They definitely can be lifted out the way and I imagine manual lifting would be bloody hard lol! Exactly but I looked online (trucks real name is OSHKOSH M911) and even the army while towing a tank on a low loader trailer had just removed that axle entirely so even they were sick of it lol! Even with heavy loads like tanks it’s clearly ok without it! Other vids had it lifted out the way! You can see why it’s replacement in real life (OSHKOSH M1040 I believe), the other Derry in the game, has all live axles and no stupid fake ones lol!

It’s Mr Lone Wolf yeah I just unlocked that one to use in white valley and Pedro pay. I like it a lot. The rear steer makes it way more maneuverable than the other heavy trucks. The clearance is a little low though.

WalterPuppet I’ve only tried that other Derry for a few minutes to try and kill a tree lol but that rear steering was so good it caught me out! I need a few minutes to get used to how sensitive it’s turning is but it’s not a bad thing! Yeah true I think raised suspension would help it a lot! Once we get mods people will add all that stuff and bigger tyres and all sorts! Can’t wait!

Watching this four years later, the addition of always on diff lock and active dead axle has transformed this truck from worthless pox to an almost unstoppable kick arse low saddle hauler. I am doing a hard mode run and I neglected to rescue this truck when I first arrived in White Valley. After struggling to drag the crappy gooseneck trailer(only free cargo semi-trailer in Alaska) with the WWS and Royal, I rescued this sucker and tried it out - The Gooseneck trailer was my bitch! Never got stuck at all using this beast. Now it is like a mini-Kolob but with the option for low saddle. It's come a long way from the truck that could not even drive over one offset hump on the tarmac. 🤔 I've just noticed there is a later vid with the liftable axle, going there now!

Don't use the chained wheel all the time, it's definitely not the best tire, it's made to go on ice only (snow is like mud in this game). For the longhorn, you could have OHD I tire which provide 1.9 as friction coefficient instead of 1.3 for the chained wheel

Yeah it’s a massive shame because it’s a really good truck but that gets in the way too much! The other Derry basically looks like the same calibre of truck but all it’s axles are live working axles so it won’t have this problem 👍🏻! Still it’s a free $140k odd sat there to get the other Derry!

Booster axles aren't driven, but IRL most can be lifted hydraulically. Required by DOT on trucks that carry heavy loads, or moving loads. Like cement mixers. Basically it just spreads the weight so it won't damage asphalt roads which well, literally melt in the US ever summer. And you can lift when empty to decrease rolling resistance and save fuel.

The Devs buffed the 3194 by adding permanent diff locks, the dead axle is still there. But way less of an issue.

I used it to get the oil rig from mountain river to the port. Fine on roads, struggled to get up the hill towards the white valley tunnel. Sold it after the delivery.

Good point with the centre wheels. I bet in real life those centre tires can be raised via air suspension when they are not required.

Your "dolly" axle, we call a pusher. That far forward it ought to passively steer. In real life you can raise and lower it, and it does have suspension.

No true sadly it doesn’t! If that axle was gone I think it would do surprisingly well as it has a heck of a lot of power and had no problem driving up the mountain, just can’t handle the lumps and bumps as you say! But mods will be able to remove that axle and then we’ll see! I may even do another review if that happens as this truck would be so much better just with that axle gone!

Yeah the majority of the US stuff is real apart from the military stuff like the Derry and the ANK, a lot of the Russian stuff is fake names though! To be honest dude someone’s already done it kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHa1Y4GofLmsas0 That’s the Russian vehicles in real life, and to be fair they’ve done it better than I could as they’ve got images and all sorts whereas I don’t know how to do that as I’m editing on the PS4, so I’d honestly recommend their vids lol it should recommend you the US trucks video under that one! If I tried to make this I think it would just end up as a worse version of theirs really and if I’m completely honest I’d have to watch their vid to get all the names lol so yeah I may as well just suggest their vid!
