Dear Adam, I wish you the best with your surgery and recovery time! With so many viewers all over the world wishing and praying for the same I have no doubt that it will be a success. You bring us such joy and pleasure with your videos, there can not be words adequate enough to covey all our admiration and fondness of you. With all your knowledge, experience and skill, and yet with a humbleness that touch our hearts and make us look up to you and smile in awe and satisfaction that there are still persons like you in the world. I am absolutely sure that your grandfather and your Dad, wherever they may be, are beaming with pride and joy of you! As for the Norton Multistone thing, I would definitely go for the original green, but how can there be other color than black for you, Adam? Black it is!

I agree with Sandrammer's logic, with different stones make it a different color but something that will catch your eye thus be used. Red is a good suggestion.

Adam, my advise is to paint the Norton Stone System, the vise, and the welding table, colors you will enjoy, and that won't clash with the other machinery that will be nearby. You have to be happy with the colors, not us. I have set a reminder, and will be praying for you on the 19th. Will be looking forward to new videos. GOD Bless and keep you, 'til we see you again.

For your hone: it's possible that the two other stones were an option. For color, I would say go with whatever you like, but I would consider going hammertone if possible in your color. Also, to get that "old style" enamel depth of color, maybe go with powder coating. On your recovery, take it easy. We'll be here when you get back.

My color recommendation is whatever’s hiding under the tag on the lid. However, the ideal of red Glyptol lining the oil basin is calling to me after someone made the comment earlier. In the end, it’s your tool and should make it whatever turns you on. We’ll figure out a tag color scheme that compliments it.

What ever color you decide on, please use epoxy paint so the oil doesn’t kill it. Or a good black that will work is POR-15. Another coating like used on the inside of machines is Glyptol. Good luck with your surgery....most of all, don’t go nuts doing stuff afterward!

Hey Adam, I think i have a solution for future public decision making on your channel: How about ~ Shaper-Chip-Bingo ~ you only need some sort of a wooden spread sheet that you can lay on the floor in front of the shaper on which the chips can land on (that hopefully doesn't catches fire) and on whatever number the most chips land on wins. You could make the sheet double sided, one side that is divided into 2 or 4 quadrants for Yes and No decisions. And the other side with many subdivisions for maybe giveaways or so. Good luck with your surgery

Green is the only way to go for a 'restoration' project. I believe that, given the excellent condition of this tool, it is worth the effort to do an accurate overall restoration as possible. This must include restoration of the colour to a finish that is as close to the original as possible. I suggest contacting Norton to see if they could help you with establishing the original colour, finish etc.

Adam’s Multi-Oil Stone tool is shown on Page 16 of the Norton catalogue No 17 from 1935. It was available in a two stone version (IM-211 Wt 23 lbs $12) and Adam’s three stone version (IM-313 Wt 32 lbs $16). Judging from the B&W photo, it was not painted in a particularly dark colour. For the three stone design, the Norton Parent company, Behr-Manning Corp was granted patent No US1946968A with priority date 6 May 1933 and a grant date of 13 Feb 1934. Inventor: Francis E Gallagher . The patent claims are voluminous, but the gist seems to be that it provided multiple stones and a means of indexing them for convenient use. The Norton catalogue states: “A complete sharpening service of outstanding merit for meat markets, hotels, restaurants, carpenter shops, cutlery factories, pattern and cabinet making shops. Features-Genuine Norton Alundum and Crystolon stones, prefilled with oil, which should not be confused with soft, dry stones which absorb oil like a sponge. Extra large size 11" x 2 1/2" permits a full sweeping stroke. Stones are reversible thus providing use of both sides. Always in a bath of oil which prevents glazing and promotes fast, smooth sharpening. Stone in use is elevated to prevent cuts and grazed knuckles. They are self-leveling. Simply lift, turn and reset. Case finely finished with extra heavy non-skid base insuring rigidity.” My vote is to paint it the original colour. Good luck Adam. ia801900.us.archive.org/18/items/NortonOilstonesAbrasiveSpecialities1935/Norton%20Oilstones%20Abrasive%20Specialties%201935.pdf patents.google.com/patent/US1946968A/en

Adam, further below is the link to the patent on the more modern version of the Multi-Oilstone that you inherited from your father. Again, the assignee is the Norton parent company, Behr-Manning Corp, with a priority data 5 May 1949 and grant date 26 June 1951. All of that suggests that your cast iron version dates from somewhere between 1934 and about 1949. If it was made before its patent grant date in 1934, then presumably the tag would say “patent pending”. The cast iron version should last forever. I am not so sure about the later model with synthetic resin parts. I am guessing that it is probably made with Bakelite or similar, which lasts well but it is quite brittle. Once again good luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery. I have had a bit of practice in that department. patents.google.com/patent/US2558325A/en

My vote for color would be classic black but add gold or brass striping on it. I have seen and used the plastic ones in the mid 60's so I know the metal one predates the mid 60's. I picked up a Norton, like the phenolic one you have for $20 off Craigslist. I had no real use for it and sold it to a fellow who wanted one just like it for his son who was a woodcarver. The coarse and medium stones had about 75% wear, the fine had none. It can also be used with food grade oil to sharpen kitchen cutlery, the secret to food grade oil? Mineral oil, good for unclogging your plumbing too.☺
