Adam, I am a practicing physician and I’m like you in that I love watching those in the trades go about their work, especially if they are good at what they do. Have always admired those skilled with their hands, and I enjoy doing many things mechanical and electrical as a pastime. I feel so many young people are misguided when they go to college to get a useless degree and then can’t get a good paying job to pay off a huge student loan debt. Some can’t even perform the simplest tasks with their hands or go about solving practical problems in daily life. We are failing our young men and women in this country I’m afraid. Skilled tradesmen and women should stand tall and proud, as life would be miserable without their knowledge, skills and work ethic. Doc.

amen - I am a bit older than adam - I was a career public servant - however my dad imbued me with a passion for trades - he was a self taught everything - an autodydact if you like - I am fanatical about machining and woodworking and foundry work for that matter (also cooking) I agree the poor kids can do nothing with their hands - I hope they have some sort of awakening - I am currently worrying a lot that adam has gone away fro the machining a bit - I hope he is able to get more work through the shop.

Right there with you Adam, the extra cash I have is usually spent on tools. And I really agree with the point you make about preserving old tools that aren't made anymore. Imagine how many crusty rusty old vices have gone to the scrap heap and been melted down.

I'm a woodworker/ furniture builder in Las Vegas NV, and I would have loved to have gotten the bottom 12' of those pecan tree trunks or at least seen on of your local woodworkers get them. Pecan is a great wood for making furniture. If you should happen to take out anymore trees that size check around for a guy with a sawmill. Such a shame to see those trunks go into the chipper.

Adam , NEVER apologise for your hobby of tool collecting. It gives you joy and hurts nobody else in any way. That makes it a good thing to do. Here in South Australia we have similar laws about trimming plants on the boundary line, but I understand the trimmed material is supposed to be returned to the owner. So all that stuff that went through the chipper would have been tossed over the fence for the neighbor to deal with. (Start of a range war maybe?) Cheers Eric

Tools make me happy. They better enable me to do, fix, make. Besides the better quality, I find old tools to be more estedicaly pleasing, and I love to see they way they solved a particular problem (with a tool design) back in the day without our modern technical advances.

Adam, You don’t have to make any excuse for collecting what you love and admire. No one does. I picked up an old 2 1/2 inch vice this week at an estate sale for two bucks. At the time I didn’t realize what I had but when I got it home and started cleaning it up I discovered a really fine, well made, very heavy little vice. I have a big machinist Vice that belonged to my dad but have want a good small vice that clamps well for a long time. I have a couple of cheap ones but they never clamp the work tight and so I never use them. This little vice is perfect. It has steel rod guides above and below the screw, a spring loaded lift pin to change rotation position and a screw clamp or mounting holes to fasten it to the bench. I was truly excited as I discovered what a little jewel it really was and no doubt would have paid much more just for the privilege of owning it.

Adam, absolutely loved the video ! Loved the part on the vises. And the "vice" on vises ! If you like saving them, more power to you, bud ! I would do that if I could. I came across at one time, a Brown & Sharp milling machine from the 1890's at a swap meet in Decatur, Tx. I never knew that they made such an animal until that swap meet. I wanted to buy it, but wasn't able to. So, I can relate to your "vice" on vises ! I'm into drag racing big time. It takes quality machines and dedicated machinists (like yourself) to do the work necessary for the level of competition now. Again, thanks ! Keep 'em coming !

There's bugger all wrong with spending your money on tools Adam, it's your money to spend as you see fit. I hate folks telling me how I should spend mine, it's non of their ruddy business. If I choose to do the same thing myself (which I do, but with Blacksmithing tools) then I just smile and shrug at anyone who asks me why? If they have to ask they won't truly understand my explanation. I have tools that are well over a century old, generations of my peers used them before me and I can 'see' that work in those tools, the slip of a chisel, the drill pock of an unexpected break through, I can trace the stories that they hold. I wonder what was made with them before me and look forward to what I can make with them after. I can add my own story to theirs. It's hard to put into words but it's a beautiful thing that only makers seem to get. You keep doing you mate.

from 2000 thru 2006, I lived in Pensacola and managed the 2 Pensacourt fitness centers. Makes me smile to see that old drill press, have used the same model a few years back when i worked at my first job as a machinist. It was fun to work with and something different compared to drill with a moving table (you could swing the drill arm faster to already marked locations, instead of moving a table to the specific spot). Bad part is that the machine is so low to the ground that a tall person like me has to sit on the ground to be able to work with, because the table mounted on the bed was not that high too... but hey, it got the job done.

Everyone has some sort of vice or another... it a vise vice for Adam. This is actually an inspiration to me. I have an old steel vice that was in the family for many years, bolted to an outdoor work space in wet Oregon. It is now quite solid rusted in place.. but with a bead blaster to clean the outside, and electrolytic de-rust to penetrate, it may be salvaged. It will need a new handle.. as someone tried to hammer it loose before I saved it. I am just finishing up a tiny 2" vise that has a clamp to hold it to a table edge. Painted it in bright red enamel. The big old rusted-solid one that belonged to dad is next.. It won't be easy, but with Adam's past video's and some others on de-rusting, I am ready to go for it this summer. That swivel jaw vise is really neat!
