SNS 362: KBC Tools Mill, Tramming and First Workpiece

We have power to our new KBC milling machine so we'll get the head trammed and make our first cuts to see how to performs. I had a small quick job to do machining a t-nut for a Southbend compound so I used it as the first test subject. We'll use some new Walter tooling that I received for the new mill.

As a retired electrician that has worked on , troubleshoot and performed PM' s on hundreds of VFD'S surprised they do not eliminate the pulleys & belt and get into the 21st century and install a drive. Do not think any inspectors in my location would ever approve a cord to feed a permanent in place machine.. Sooner or later cord will get damaged. Appears you can not do a ceiling drop to feed power due to crane so best practice is to run heavy wall conduit on top of standard 1 5/8" deep unistrut so yoh can still clean chips off floor. Place I worked for had cords like this until OSHA came in and we got tons of overtime fixing code violations. Pay me now or pay me a lot more later. Good luck on your nice shop.

Hey Adam I would have just used the Walter face mill for those initial side cuts on the T slot, that end mill was sticking out a lot, and had a lot of load on just the tip. Once you were shoulder milling, you could tell the cutter was loaded up and giving a better cut with less vibration. Awesome videos as always.

Metal swarf is the natural predator of plastic-coated electrical cables. I suggest that cords on the floor need metal covers (with sloping sides so that they are not trip hazards).

Adam, I hope i might help. First, carbide endmills love strong grip. Er collets just don't cut it most of the time, ive had better results even with weldon style holders. About the speeds and feeds, it is a range, carbide can take far greater and far lower speeds and feeds even than the recommended range. Carbide loves pressure so increasing the feed per tooth would help to stabilise it. Try not to run it in the middle of the part like you did here. Take deeper but side cuts. I think you had chatter here for several of these reasons. Best of luck to you sir.

as a hobby machinist and cnc operator, I play guitar and the precision to build quality guitars is not much less. Not to mention, If I scrap a piece of metal I just grab another piece and keep going, If you scrap a piece of work it could ruin the whole project. Nice guitars you got going there too.

Try the carbide in a solid holder. They are usually run in shrink fit holders to my knowledge. It seems to me like the collet holder is what’s making the noise, it doesn’t sound or appear like actual chatter at the cutting faces. That would be visible in surface finish and usually would change depending on your feeds and speeds. The rigidity of the cutter is vibrating the arms of the collet since the end mill itself has very little ability to deflect and absorb those resonances.

You can test this by making a side milling pass with the carbide and with a similar hss end mill. Then make a spring pass and measure the difference. The carbide should have substantially less deflection, even in the collet holder.

It looks like a standard carbide end mill. Try a variable helix end mill. All big name brands make them. They reduce chatter so you can climb cut on that mill. Can't wait to see that lathe make chips!

Wow, I've never heard of belt dressing spray before. I've have an Ajax AJT-1 for a few years (not remotely new, unfortunately), and the belt has always made a rubbery noise. Thanks for the tip - I'm about to order some. I'm surprised a new machine with an X axis power feed has that handle type. I swapped mine for a round handle when I filled my Align X axis feed, as the original handle style (like yours) so close to the power feed housing looked like a trapped hand waiting to happen.

the 300 SFM was not for full width slotting, that speed would be for 1.5 times depth of cut with a 25% of diameter radial depth. For full width slotting cut feed in half, cut speed down to 60% and no more than 1 times diameter depth of cut.

Hi Adam, please don't use belt sprays like that. In a way, the spray lubricates the belt. The noise gets quieter. But that makes it worse. Squeaky belts are usually caused by the pulleys being misaligned. There should be no squeaking during normal operation without a spray. Greetings Paul

@@colinfahidi9983 Hello Colin, as I wrote before. There can be many reasons why the V-belt squeaks. For example: - insufficient belt tension - Bearing damage - worn belt - Pulley misalignment I would return the sprays. While these sprays reduce the noise, the problem remains the same. You may even damage your straps with it. Ask Continental, for example. Nobody there will recommend belt spray. Greetings Paul
