"Cute anime girl EXCEPT...!" is definitely the driving concept behind Hololive's momentum on the English-speaking side, dating all the way back to Bandaids, FAQ, and Scatman. I think every generation of Hololive had the deeper voice except for Gen 0 and Gen 1. Gen 2: Choco and Subaru are on the more deeper voiced, tomboyish. Gamers: Okayu is definitely tomboyish with her pranks and naturally deep/calm voice. Gen 3: Flare definitely has that lower voice as she mentioned. Gen 4: Towa has both a semi-deep voice and a tomboyish nature around her. Gen 5: Botan is the closest to a deep voice, I believe, but polka definitely has a lively tomboy nature with her. I'll admit that Hololive ID doesn't really have anyone with a deep voice or tomboyish nature. Maybe Ayunda Risu, but only with her alternative "ayunda" personality. Gen 5: Calliope's the definition of tomboyish.

@@bwestacado9643 Yeah same here. I knew of Snuffy before the Raccoon era but I didn't really pay attention to her because she was just another uwutuber trying to stand out in an oversaturated category of online persona. She blended in with the rest, which gave me little incentive to watch anything about her. After she changed to the Raccoon model and started using her real voice, I actually started watching her intently. She was entertaining and stood out to me because she wasn't trying to be an uwu loli anymore. It's quite surprising how in the VTuber world, just being relatively normal makes you stand out compared to the rest who may be trying so hard to uphold a cutesy image. I actually had to double take a few times when I realised how much Snuffy had changed. I was like "That's Snuffy? _THAT_ Snuffy!? The one who used to use a pink loli cat model with an uwu voice?". It was really surprising to me but I'm so glad she came out of her shell and started to open up a bit. She went from being someone I barely knew about, to quickly becoming one of my favourite personalities on the entire internet.
@bwestacado9643
@bwestacado9643 3 жыл бұрын
@@Some-guy-on-the-internet Yeah she's amazing to watch now. I like how real she is. Some fans complain because they want the illusion, but I would rather the person behind the avatar be comfortable with themselves. Snuffy was obviously struggling with her uwu voice and felt like she was lying to us (even though we all pretty much assumed that wasn't her real voice) and was really upset about being herself. I'm glad chat was able to calm her down and reassure her that she's loved for her and we don't care about the facade. There are enough out there putting on an act and giving what they think the community wants. We're just as diverse as any community and want different things. Others want the uwu voice, while I personally want real Snuffy. I like the real her a lot more than her persona lol. She's easily my favorite independent and I want her in VShojo with the other ladies I love watching. I think HL is cool, but VS has the personality types I gravitate towards
@Some-guy-on-the-internet
@Some-guy-on-the-internet 3 жыл бұрын
@@bwestacado9643 I prefer it when VTubers stay true to themselves too. I understand the "illusion" argument but having a more realistic persona behind the avatar adds a level of connectedness between the viewer and VTuber that I feel can't be easily replicated with a fake persona. It's something special that makes me appreciate VTubers like Snuffy a lot more than others. I do still like Hololive and similar entities, and the aspect of playing a character as a VTuber can be very fun. But sometimes I'm just not in the mood for watching a character. Sometimes I just want to watch someone actually being themselves behind the avatar, and Snuffy is one of the few who fill that role wonderfully. I think if a VTuber can find the right balance between playing a character and being real, it can bring out the best in them.

@@Some-guy-on-the-internet Yeah that's why I'm so fond of VS. They seem to be more true to who they are as people. I have a thing for nekos lol, so it I was hard pressed not to click on a clip of a cute pink haired neko wearing a trucker hat lol. I was able to find Froot and Mousey and Veibae and Snuffy thanks to Nyan. Melody is a dork and I'm betting she's a dork irl. It seems hella natural and not forced in the least. Mousey is the queen of tsundere lmao and she's more than comfy being a perv. I love Snuffy because she’s one of the single most genuine streamers. To elaborate, she has this really charismatic attitude coupled with a somewhat nihilistic outlook that is not only relatable, but I actually look up to. This chick decided it would be fun to be a Vtuber. She’s not in it for money or fame, and yet she cares enough about her fans to kind of conform to the cutesy standard, only to drop the facade and find out fans actually love her the way she is. That’s amazing. We now have a more unique brand of Vtuber. Not merely cute and vulgar, but utterly off the wall, unpredictable, actual people. Even in character, I’ve never seen characters that feel so familiar and believable, despite being literal demons and Eldarich horrors. Western Vtubers are just on another level, and I’m glad Eastern Vtubers are so influential. I’m glad more Eastern Vtubers are speaking English. We’re all connecting with one another and it’s fun to see this community blossom.

Over time though, she became more popular and spawned a generation of indie vtubers to what we watch now because of that influence. I have to agree with her that one of the worst trends here on KZbin and Twitch is when somebody creates a new idea or format all of a sudden everyone starts to copy that and adds nothing new or intresting to the formula which in the ends up oversaturating the market only devalues the orignial. Abridged series, media review channels, social commentary channels, D&D streams, reaction videos, now Vtubers are all examples of video genres that have appeared and suddenly the market gets oversaturated with cheap immitations. The nice thing about vtubers from the other ones i mentioned is that it really is their personality 100% carries the product, so every Vtuber tends to be different and unique which is such a nice change from the normal copycat channels which are just like the orignial but maxed out cringe levels.

Snuffy should know that Hololive EN is a much more different environment than JP, or ID, etc. Each region has its own traits and culture, and doesn't need to be forced upon at all. if anything Snuffy's channel is more like Nyanners, possibly like the latter in the early days. And those of you who knows Gura as well. All vtubers in the current generations of youth, starts off indie with memes and trash talking and whatnot, its how they get identified. But hololive is a bit more like a job, or a profession, an actual 'acting' job that you gotta put a front every time you show up on stream. And from these sponsored vtubers, you tend to notice they do suffer a bit from social anxieties and get lonely, because having millions of subs or viewers isn't going to completely satisfy your social needs alone. I do notice Snuffy lacks some self-esteem on herself, when it comes to her identity. Usually these issues arise from your own life.

I dunno if I'd call Flare "one of the more unpopular ones". Seems pretty unfair. It's not a competition, and I'm sure every one of Flare's fans love her with all their heart, which is the only important thing.

Hololive are the biggest in the business, so of course people are trying to figure out what it is that they have. Oddly enough, I'm pretty sure that it's because they have good people and there's something for everyone. That's the power of an agency Now I just hope they don't go the way of the early youtuber agencies, coz that could be real nasty

it's not wise to directly compare non-english to english vtubers, while hololive goes for a unified brand even they either realised quickly the differences that gain success or the recruits simply stopped putting on as much of an act once the initial launches settled down, it's still a group but there's room for individual action (tho game permissions seem to happen in waves) squeaky voices with verbal-ticks seems to be a lot more common on the idol/character/anime industry western streamers generally do better by simply being variety entertainers (not counting the softcore camgirls for obvious reasons), i'm glad hololive got a few more people doing classic variety-show stuff like singing/clip-introduction and collabs as it's a tough thing to start up but once a few see success other are liekly to follow suit and lets face it, most people know already if they have any particular talent, it's just down to if they can cold an audience down while performing it (e.g. drawing, rhythm games or e-sports). Ultimately it's a template to take inspiration from not a mandatory box to force yourself into (at least past the intro phase, it's always wise to lead with your best foot foreward). The success of some often leads to additional attention for anyone who can hold their own candles.

Gotta wonder if she even is aware of other vtuber companies like Nijisanji or Animare? The only ones trying to portray an idol culture is Hololive and even they are workign to move away from that and go back to being more entertainers showcasing their tech.

Everyone needs to know: you don’t become successful by trying to create another product or service. They already exist and if people want that, they’ll go to existing one, not your new one. Find your own niche from which to grow. Even large companies fall prey to the “make an identical product” fallacy and lose big time because they didn’t understand that simple fact.

@richie0099 3 жыл бұрын
@@Haunt888 I think she was referring to cute high pitch voices versus a more normal lower tone voice and she’s right most of the popular vtubers have that cute higher pitch voice with very few exceptions like Coco and now that i think about it even Hachama has that high pitch voice with cute sounds but you don’t have to make that type of voice to be a vtuber now it’s so common that a regular voice is ok to get a decent following it’s all about the edgy and viral stuff they do now that gets them more subscribers or views.

@@richie0099 I know, all I'm saying is those unique voices of Coco, Marine and Matsuri are also anime types, like this is how famous VA are, their voices are identifiable and recognizable, I'm not saying they can't do variations of voices but usually like HanaKana, they stick to one

Snuffy, please. The most popular members of Hololive are not popular because of their voices, but because of their entertaining Personalities. Haachama is fucking insane, Pekora is a prankster asshole, Marine is horny 24/7, Ame is as toxic as a box jellyfish, and Coco is... Coco. Flare is just someone who does her own thing and doesn't care about a high sub count. And even then, she picks up steam currently. It has nothing to do with her or anyone's voice.
