So Disney is remaking the Little Mermaid but according to a novelization of the movie, they changed the ending to Ariel taking out Ursula instead of Eric. I personally don't think that's necessary and in this video essay I'll explain why.

Lol 😂 Someone register this comment into a book of famous quotes. Literally this is the crux of the issue that women never need help (God forbid a man’s help). There’s no internal struggle or character development that inherently requires the help of another person. She was born perfect with her life in order. Having a prince (that she saved on her own) as a husband would just be the cherry on top of her already perfect, no-struggles-needed character/life.

It's a shame Disney has forgotten how important Eric was for Disney Princes. Before him, we had the ones in Snow White and Cinderella, and Philip in Sleeping Beauty. Because Disney animators weren't confident with drawing human men, they limited the princes' involvements in the story and gave them minimal character. But Eric changed that. He was the first Disney Prince to have hobbies and a personality. He's a musician, he's a free spirit, he's a sailor, he laughs and dances with his men. He showed that Disney was finally ready to give its leading male human characters some character, and it paid off. Why take away his crowning moment of awesome to give it to Ariel, who already had plenty of awesome moments in the film?

As cool as it is to have strong female characters, they're really starting to sacrifice the male characters for it. Especially the preexisting ones who who actually have personality and maybe one Twitter thread has a problem with. I want strong characters saving each other, or weak characters pushing past their fear because the other matters to them. They're not making a new story or making anything less problematic, they're just,, flipping the person playing the roles in a weak attempt to prove how "with the times" they are. Are feminine men shown in a positive light a good thing? Absolutely. Is it okay for the man to be the one in need of saving? 100% that'd actually be really cool. Is it right to take a preexisting character's part of a moment because they're a man and it doesn't fit the narrative of the public? Not one bit. Like,,Eric and Ariel are saving each other, Eric just happens to get the final blow. I'd genuinely rather they make new movies than redoing and altering old movies if their agenda is that important to them. Or adjust those blank slate princes to fit their needs. Just stop dumbing down the fleshed out male characters.

If you look through a making-of for Aladdin (1992), Disney had already forgotten about Eric. There's a part where Glen Keane describes the Disney formula of "cartoonish sidekicks, dramatic villains, beautiful heroines, and the boring Prince Charming no one wanted to animate", when talking about how they developed Aladdin's character. It's like they completely forgot about Eric and the Beast, who were not cookie-cutter princes either. I don't think Prince Philip fits into the "boring" category either, considering he fought Maleficent in the climax of Sleeping Beauty (making him more active than Snow White's Prince and Prince Charming).

As a girl who has a hard time asking for help in general , thank you. This whole trend of “you don’t need a man to save you” is getting stupid. It should be ok for all of us to ask for help, even if the one who is helping is a man. Asking for help should be encouraged, we can’t do or deal with everything alone. Children, especially teenagers who might be having a hard time due to the changes of growing up, could really use this message.

They're trying to 'empower' Ariel. It's dumb. Ariel was hugely empowered in the original Little Mermaid, both film and fairy tale. She made dozens of choices that radically affected the direction of the narrative. She had the most agency of any character. And that's what empowerment is: not power, as the name would suggest, but agency. The capacity to choose. Shame such messages don't exist in modern film... ...except they do.

What I loved about Little Mermaid (even as a kid) is that Ariel and Eric save and fight for each other. Ariel is no slouch, she rescued Eric from a ship wreck, is determined to reach the wedding ship and fights to get to him, and even physically attacks Ursula. Eric may not be able to swim under water, but he does what he can. He knows ships, and uses his sailing skills to help out the best he can. Even after having been bewitched, him using the ship is his own way of fighting back against the sea witch. It makes Ariel and Eric equals. As they both fight in their own way for the same thing.

The biggest problem I have with the "strong female character" trope that's been pushed so hard is that it's honestly damaging for young girls. Instead of being shown that it's okay to feel weak sometimes, it's okay to ask for help, they're bombarded with the constant sentiment that you don't need anyone's help, especially not a MAN's. All you need is to realize how amazing and awesome you already are, and you can't fail. This is legitimately terrible advice, because it encourages girls to think that any failure they encounter is never their own fault, but it's always because someone else is holding them back. It can't possibly be because they simply can't do everything themselves.

Why would he even think to let his daughter go up to live on the land with Eric when he seems to be completely incompetent in this version, and Ariel seems to already be able to do everything she wanted to become a human for as a mermaid, anyway? Why would Ariel even make a deal to become a human to explore the land and be with Eric, if her fins can already defy the laws of fins, gravity, and physics by letting her float and move around upright on land? Even if they do add a scene of Ariel learning how to sail, she still wouldn’t be able to steer the ship in the final battle because it’s during a crazy storm and even the best sailors have trouble steering through those. However, Eric was able to steer the ship because it’s established during the shipwreck scene that he has nautical experience. Someone like Eric would have years of experience from living on an island kingdom and needing to travel by sea. Someone like Ariel wouldn’t have the experience because she lived underwater for the majority of her life and would have no idea how to steer ships under pressure. 110% agree with you. This is probably going to be the MOST frustrating Disney live action remake to date. The substance of the story is being ruthlessly gutted and turned into some pushy political agenda nonsense that continues to bankrupt Disney, and (for that matter) Hollywood as time goes on. You know it’s an agenda, because they keep pushing it, despite this industry losing billions with these dumpster fires.

so dramatic and waaay of wrong. did you watch the movie? how about stop being a hater and a negative person. because you would see that the movie is not at all like you negative and hating people were praying for it to be. it's people like you that would make king triton rethink about letting ariel back on land. also no it isnt as instrumental to the story there is plenty of other things ariel and eric (and the other humans) do that are inline with their characters thtat convinces triton to let ariel live her life and be with humans. man for some one who is acting so strongly about the movie as if they actually cared about the little mermaids message (og story) and the little mermaid ariels symbolism ( the cartoon) your mentality is far off. first of the whole point is for even in the cartoon and the og story for ariel to find her own way and live her life as she wishes and not confined and controlled by her father. her getting her legs is her father letting her go because she had already proved she can take care of herself and that she will go her way no matter what and yes that she will find people who will love and support her ( her friends, eric and the kind peopel she meets on land). it;s not just not trusting humans he also doesnt trust ariel (that she is capable). also eric doesnt neet to do the killing blow to help fight ursual which he does and also attacks her. man just watch the movie and learn to not be so negative without any real info and stop feeding yourself with negative energy and emotions when there is no reason to. literally this nonsense that people were saying about the movie was so wrong any ways.

@@CoachCarter94Personally I think the Jungle Book remake was the most frustrating one so far. They completely missed the point of the source material to the point where they made Mowgli stay in the jungle just because it's where he grew up, rather than having him accept that the jungle has nothing to offer him in the long run and go to the village. The Little Mermaid remake was frustrating, but at least they got the narrative somewhat right even though the changes they made hurt the movie.

Disney already showed what they think of the Disney Princes back in Wreck It Ralph 2. They demanded them by saying their only purpose was to be a big, strong man to solve all the women's problems. I showed them the trailer and asked if they want me to take them to see it, and my ten year old said no thanks, we can watch the cartoon anytime on Disney. You’d think that they’d be the exact demographic that the movie’s aimed at, but the trailer just didn’t do it for them. And they love the original.

A troubling pattern that I'm seeing here in these Disney movies is this message: these women are heroes because they are NATURALLY BORN PERFECT. In real life, who is born naturally perfect? No one is, so the message I'm seeing is; you are born the way you are, and you cannot change, so if you aren't born a hero, you don't have a path toward being one. You cannot grow into being better than you are now, and no one should try to teach you that you can or ought to. That is a very toxic message to see repeatedly, especially in these movies that are designed to replace the older stories. We need to hold on to these older stories that teach that we can become who we want or need to be through effort, or by working with others, or so.

What I love about Zootopia’s MC is that she failed in police training in the beginning, had to use her bunny skills to navigate a world not built for her. She was wrong and flawed at the end, and had to make things right. Zootopia may be a bit woke, but it didn’t alienate men or made it a predator vs prey (white vs poc) issue. They made the topic of racism a bad person vs innocent people issue, which is why it’s a very good “woke” movie that tackles racism. It’s original too!! What the fck are these remakes.

Only one they kinda did right was Gaston, but it was better in the original that he literally stabbed the Beast in the back to show his betrayal, as opposed to shooting him in the back several times from a safe distance. Another problem that this change creates is that, in the end of the original animated movie, you can see that there is a silent moment of respect between Eric and Triton. In the past, Triton had a very strong hatred against humanity for all the fish that they hunt on a daily basis, so knowing that Eric not only treated Ariel well, but was also willing to fight for her against a foe that was way beyond both a regular human AND Triton's own magic would've undoubtedly impressed Triton a lot, and it would allow Triton to see that there is good in humanity. In their attempt to "empower" this new Ariel, they will take away from Eric's agency, and it's really annoying, because he is as much relevant to the original movie as Ariel is.

I know I’m a supporter of women, but when the creators find Eric “wooden” and decided to expand his character, I find them hypocritical that they decided to make Ariel be the one killing Ursula. It’s also impractical how Ariel manages to steer the ship on her own despite not being a sailor and is also a marine humanoid incapable of walking on land while she gets her revenge on Ursula for tormenting her loved ones and herself. There’s a the reason why the original film had to have Eric killing Ursula-he’s a sailor, he’s a human incapable of swimming as fast as mermaids but perfectly capable of walking on land and he gets his revenge on Ursula for tormenting the one he cared the most and himself-not because he’s a man.

What annoys me the most about this change (at least in the book so far) of Ariel killing Ursula instead of Eric is how the Disney chills say that it made no sense for Eric to defeat Ursula in the original movie. It was all connected to King Triton’s dislike of humans and then changing his mind about them after Eric showed his bravery and love for Ariel by risking himself in order to take down Ursula. The movie was leading up to that moment from the beginning, but that’s not empowering enough I guess so here we are with yet another Disney soulless remake that misunderstands the og movie and disrespects it. For a while, I thought Eric was a bit of a dummy, specifically for not noticing Sebastian speaking into his ear or questioning any of the odder things going on, but I've since warmed up to him. He might be a bit naive, but he's clearly better than I gave him credit for (I don't take apparent mental incompetence well, it's an issue I've worked on since) and I like him these days, he's a confident, happy, compassionate, and brave young man. I in particular love his defeat of Ursula, how he manages to actually _grab the ropes of a passing ship_ while being tossed around in the waves, and scale said ropes and pilot the ship is honestly an amazing set of feats that impress me now and likely will forever. The fact that I once thought unfairly of Eric, and that apparently the "remake" will be taking away a lot of what made him crucial to the plot, at least in a way that's compassionate to his character, makes me angry. But if the lines are changed then she has almost no reason to take her voice. Here's what I think. I think Ursula isn't going to end up being a villain in this new TLM maybe she's going to get a redemption arc. Have you noticed that the female villains in Disney's live action movies are always portrayed differently from the animations? Maleficent and Cruella were giving background stories. But male villains are left as villains Jafar and Gaston as examples. So who's to say Ursula won't be given the same treatment as the other Live Action Disney female villains . Cos of this Delusion that Disney seems to have about women being perfect and can never do wrong. I really hope I'm wrong about all this though

How DARE they change Howard Ashman's lyrics. He was a gay man (so why would he write a song about a man forcing himself onto someone?) He was also a well known lyricist who died of AIDS, bringing more attention to the issues surrounding that. He was talented and and bought us these wonderful lyrics that launched the Disney Renaissance into full force. It's like they completely forgot where the source material came from.

Might i add: Eric saving Ariel is especially important because Triton’s biggest worry was that Ariel would be in danger by being close to humans. Eric saving Ariel from one of Triton’s greatest antagonist, it allow for Triton to not just trust Ariel’s judgement in her choices but that she would be safe with the humans.

The curse of "girlboss" is afoot. It's gone from the one UNIQUE woman being strong and independent, to EVERY woman needs to be that way. Not only does this make woman feel like they need to be strong, but it also stops a lot of creativity in media. This is why I hated that name existing. Because its sorta like the redundancy of "breaking the glass ceiling" repeatedly. All it serves is false validation that they are strong and causes unneeded conflict. This curse is hopefully temporary though. The most likely reason it exists is because companies are scared to be called sexist or bigots for making weak characters, which would bring down profit. Once they realize it won't they might go back to making normal content again.

If there's no scene showing Ariel being taught how to steer a boat; they'll probably claim, given her habit of visiting the human world/spying on humans and approaching ships, she had learned by observing the helmsman (?) as he steered a boat (or she read it in a book or some claptrap like that).

NOT TO MENTION Ursula's an older woman taking advantage of the youth and naivete of two impulsive teenagers who are in love and under circumstances where they can't be together. It's VERY nuanced for a Disney love story- but Disney doesn't see the nuance and depth of their own works anymore.

And how does Ariel learn how to steer a ship? Disney’s really setting a dangerous precedent. A LOT of entertainment companies are. Long gone are the days of having female characters with flaws that they need overcome. Now female characters are all perfect. They thrive in every aspect in life and don’t need help from anyone. What message does that teach girls? If you’re not perfect and aren’t skilled in every activity ever, too bad? Should’ve been born more perfect. I’m all for trying to highlight the competence of their female characters (especially given the stereotypes that have formed). But at least make things somewhat plausible. Unless they include a scene where Ariel learns how to captain a ship, then this doesn’t work. We’ve seen how Eric had to teach Ariel to steer a horse drawn carriage. And even then, she didn’t immediately get it. She needed to learn to reign things in. And now she’s able to steer an entire boat during a magical storm conjured by a sea witch? Yes, there’s power in being self-sufficient. But there’s even more power in having the courage to admit your own shortcomings and ask for help (or to rely on others). You can still get in the lessons about female empowerment without sacrificing the other lessons that the original film was able to teach. They’re acting as if Ariel was a damsel in distress when she needed so much courage to try and pursue a man without her voice or knowing how to walk. By trying to overcompensate for what they deem to be issues with the original film, the directors have come off as being pretty misogynistic in how they’ve viewed their female leads.

It's even stupider with the fact that Ariel is doing this while her lower half is a fish tail. Barring the fact that Ariel was basically tripping over the amounts of consent she was trying to give as best she could without a voice in the original; If they wanna tiptoe through politically correct eggshells with this moment, there better not be any time limit to the curse. 3 days for a mute female character to give consent nowadays does NOT seem like a lot of time if that’s the game they wanna play - let alone with Ursula, flotsam and jetsam always lurking around every corner trying to make things more difficult for them with the already precious little time they have.

There's nothing wrong with someone (no matter the gender) needing help at some point and Ursula is immensely powerful at that point, so needing more than one person to defeat her makes perfect sense. A woman needing help is not automatically a damsel - damsels are usually passive and don't even try to do something. Ariel is active, she's not a damsel, she's just up against something that's too big for her to tackle alone. Getting/needing help in such a case is perfectly fine. As for a mute girl not being able to give consent: Ariel is mute, but not deaf. If Eric asks for a kiss, she can very well nod or shake her head to indicate how she feels about it. If she nods and he kisses her, all is perfectly fine.

I agree. The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie, anything they do to it is going to ruin it. Ursula is even my favorite villain because she lays it out straight for Ariel... "Life's full of tough choices, idn't it?" Then she went and sabotaged Ariel's chance, but she's a villain, right? By the way, Ursula's actions would have voided the contract with Ariel. It wasn't "unbreakable". Ursula had already broken the contract by interfering with Ariel's performance.

Its sad to see them rewrite these great stories. As you said in this video, the characters arnt supposed to be over powered from the get go, but rather train to overcome their obsticles. In the case of Mulan, she is supposed to be a daughter that doesnt fit in with society. Making her a really good fighter from a young age begs the question why she didnt just join the army earlier. The original animation showed that she didnt want to join the fight, but would rather die in place of her father and bring shame to the family. Her quick thinking proves to be enough to keep her safe and beat the bad guys. In the case of the little mermaid (the animation), she was a curious young woman who wanted a change. Prince Eric wasnt the only goal she was aiming for, but she fell in love from being fascinated in that world. They both are able to beat Ursula, someone who was so powerful through simple things desperate moves like pulling on her hair or driving a boat into her. Thats desperation, as none of that is planed and they are willing to fight with all they got. I havent seen the live actions of either of these movies, but when you make changes like these, it changes the meaning of the stories. Its not all about women who dont need help from a man, which like you said, isnt reality. Its ok to ask for help, its ok to fall in love, and its ok to need to practice or train to become better.

There's another problem with making Ariel instead of Eric the one to defeat Ursula. When Eric does it, it proves to Triton that Eric not only loves Ariel but is willing to protect her from any danger. Eric saw for himself that Ursula was a powerful sea witch and he's powerless. Even so, he didn't think twice about throwing a harpoon at Ursula and then skewering her to death with the prow of a sunken ship. Without that, Triton has no reason to think better of Eric and let Ariel marry him. If Triton let Ariel marry a guy who couldn't protect himself or her, then what kind of a father would that make him?

This gives me similar vibes to the whole trend of putting men down as the only way we can "empower" women. As a woman, this is so annoying. We should build each other up and help each other out. And that whole "consent issue" in kiss the girl is so stupid and pointless because Eric doesn't even seem that into kissing her until the end of the song. If anything, he's the one being coerced because It's Ariel who eager and wants the kiss and the song is trying to convince him to kiss her (I never read it that way of course, because he did seem to be getting feelings and he was more not wanting to kiss her because first date awkwardness type thing. But if we really want to view there being an issue of consent it's the reverse from what the creators are saying). So like...did we watch the same movie?!?
